@pawnsacrifice1 Along with Bowie, Ian Hunter and Lennon and to a smaller degree, Ferry. Although Elton never had cred with the punks, he actually championed and quite liked Punk.
Lets try Jimmy Rogers for starters (B.1897) died at 35 but was Howlin Wolf's childhood hero, yeah thats right, Chuck Berry knew all of his songs, incorporated country twang in the blues. All thos young british kids, future rock stars influenced by the blues and r50s ock n roll, resurrecting the blues and revitalizing rock n roll from folk music. Do some research, you'll find more music that you didnt know about along the way. I find new stuff all the time.

@flaxonx3 Maybe you are just trying to get a reaction, so here it is. I think British rock si great especially british blues rock, Free and Humble pie are outstanding examples compared the the larger more marketed big name acts. But regardless where all this great music came from, it all started here in the USA, doesnt make us better its just the facts.
Novice, you've got to be joking? The only thing punk about Generation X is Billy's hairdo. This is POP MUSIC, plain and simple. Their colorful "punk" wardrobes looks like something the Bay City Rollers (another teenie-bopper pop act, if you don't know) would wear. I like Generation X and even have their Greatest Hits CD, but this is not PUNK music. It's the contrived 70's version of Nu Metal, loud, fast and SAFE music intended for teenage fans trying to jump on the "punk" band wagon.
@DasBlood what a self important little prick you are. gen x is recognized a one of the influences in the original punk movement and you know it. u just felt like being rude to someone. and that makes you a no one.you are probablya 50 yr old virgin that lives with him mum. lol
haha.. Generation X influenced a lot of Japanese kids to buy records. They were not influential in the US, I'll tell you that. We had REAL punk bands here.
@DasBlood They sure as hell were influential in the U.S., nimrod! Just as they were in Britain. And what were those "REAL" punk bands? Britain had superior punk bands just like they had superior rock bands! Deal with it! And shove Henry Rollins & Glen Danzig up your ass.
@pussypop100 Too easy, what do you KNOW about punk, Ramones, already mentioned here, um lets see MC5, I'll let you do the research so you can learn more. there are even more bands considered punk or early punk by some, such as the doors. What you think punk or any genre music is, is only your opinion because some of the biggest punks laughed at the punk fans in the 70s, Like Steve Jones wearing the doiley on his head, fans soon repeated. Dont give a damn where "it" came from, but know ur facts

I think the whole little, gay, posey act was a little overdone by Bolan. He didn't have to do that... he was great without it, and should just be himself.
Look at Generation-X. Lean and mean. Now look at the modern neo-poseur insta-punk bands of today. Notice how fat , bloated and over fed the corporate "punk" bands of today look.
No, Marc Bolan wasn't gay or weird. He was the leader of the glam rock movement, an part of his signature style was his camp demeanor/attitude on stage.
No, Billy Idol got arrested on the lower east side in NYC for crack possession but told the police it was his GIRLFRIEND'S and they arrested her instead. So he's straight. He's not weird just self involved.
Bolan was one of the first guys on daytime TV to support the punk bands. He took the Damned out on tour with him. Lewisham Odeon one of the best shows ever.
Oh yeah, and by the way...I loved the "carnation throwing" by "fresh" Marc Bolan who was ALSO wearing a carnation-colored shirt (sexy bellybutton, too. Haha.) before introducing Billy Idol and Generation X. Now THAT was scarier than demon worshipping. Haha.
Oh yeah, and by the way...I loved the "carnation throwing" by Marc Bolan before introducing Generation X who was ALSO wearing a carnation-colored outfit. Now THAT was scarier than demon worshipping. Haha.
OMG.... This is BILLY IDOL... He is god of Punk Rock. I love him. He's so Awesome. I must say I prefer his solo stuff.... Whiplash Smile, Rebel Yell, Eyes without a Face, Dancing with Myself, Blue Highway, Catch My Fall, It's so Cruel, Sweet Sixteen, White Wedding, Dead on Arrival, Flesh for Fantasy.. God the list is endless.
Marc brought us out the dull hippy era and Billy & Tony did the same post punk. One thing is for sure glam rock IS great stage show stuff (rock n roll) -luv 'em both
But Marc Bolan was the "Godfather of Punk", and even though it was self proclaimed, Generation X were the first band to play his music variety show and they didn't seem to not back him on the claim,....man..., nor the Damned that played on his show too. And then Marc Bolan is known for dying soon after, and Generation X splinters into "Billy Idol", "Empire" and "Sigue Sigue Sputnik", all not as cool as the coolest looking band of ll time.
I think you have to go back to the Kingsmen and the original "Louie Louie" for proto-punkismm, or better yet, Larry and Laurie Collins' "Whistle Bait".
That's Marc Bolan- one of the biggest UK rock stars in history. And if you're concerned about 'fags' you shouldn't even be LISTENING to punk cos you've COMPLETELY missed the whole fucking point! Do you even know the origin of the word?
I'm sorry I didn't know who the fag was. He seemed all too gay for me to give a crap. And are you saying punk is actually gay music? If so, I'm noy buying it.
Man, you idiots are SO clueless! Yeah tell it to Billy Idol and he'll know what I'm saying cos he's not a homphobic twat like you people. Seriously- if you're listening to punk and you use the word 'fag' as an insult you have totally missed the point... Just read 'Please Kill Me', if you can actually read, then you'll probably have to throw away half your record collection.
You want to know the truth? I don't listen to punk that much. I listen to mostly glam rock. You want to tell me that glam rock is gay then I'm not replying anymore to your stupid ass comments. You're not worth my time. I don't believe anything you say and I won't believe anything you say because it's all bull. You know something else? I don't care what people call my beliefs against gays. I know glam rockers were NOT gay besides Marc Bolan. Glam rockers were the most womanizing of all rockers. Just look at Motley Crue, Poison, Britny Fox, and Cinderella. Besides, what the crap do my beliefs have to do with what I listen to? I think I made my point clear enough by now, don't you think?
You fekkin moron. Those are hair metal bands. Glam Rock began in 1971 with Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Gary Glitter, Suzie Quatro, the Sweet, Sparks, and on and on and on.
Getting a little rude, aren't we? Everyone, and I mean everyone refers to Motley Crue as a glam rock band. Look around on the comment boards. I just go with what other people call them. Hair metal and glam rock are known as the same thing.
Because it was a form of rock music so devoid of creativity that it had to even steal its name from a former movement. You're trying to compare people like Bolan, Bowie, Ferry, Eno et all to ... Cinderella?
Got a point there, but I've never even thought David Bowie would be considered glam rock. Cinderella was also a bad example of hair metal all together, anyways. They were more on the edge of classic rock and blues even though they had an appearance of a hair metal band.
Ok, ok. You win. He did invent glam rock. I was just corrupted by my fellow youtubers and was made to think that real glam rock was invented by bands such as Motley Crue.
Alright then. Bolan invented glam rock. Now that I went on wikipedia, I have now got it all straight. New York Dolls, Marc Bolan, and David Bowie were the first glam rockers, but Bolan was the first out of all three.
no one "invents" a style of music. Its like everyone says Black Sabbath invented Heavy Metal even though bands like Leaf Hound, Iron Butterfly, Bang, Bloodrock, The JPT Scare Band, Epitaph, Black Widow, and Alice Cooper and literally hundreds of others were all out there at the same time doing similar things. Its the same with glam.
motley crue is hair metal, which isn't the same thing as glam rock. bolan was the first glam rocker, bowie second, and then came the rest. hair metal is honestly one of the worst thing ever to happen to music.
fookin good stuff. I like the mod shirt on the drummer. this is what punk was really. Marc is being Marc too. sad that he died soon after this. wathcing clips from this show always reminds me of the T-Rex song Chrome Sitar...the good old days
lol Emo is an invetion or just a name if you will to disgregate one band from another regardless if it's good or it sucks. I mean, either way it could suck or rock but no, lately everything reduces to I like emo, I like poperpop I like punk rock, I like hardcore; Like you couldn't like a band just because you like it :(

Alright then. Bolan invented glam rock. Now that I went on wikipedia, I have now got it all straight. New York Dolls, Marc Bolan, and David Bowie were the first glam rockers, but Bolan was the first out of all three.

True that!

I would consider Sid Barret of early Floyd, an early glam rocker.

no one "invents" a style of music. Its the same with glam.

and you mention JPT Scare Band, in that case you win. good on ya

motley crue is hair metal, which isn't the same thing as glam rock. bolan was the first glam rocker, bowie second, and then came the rest. hair metal is honestly one of the worst thing ever to happen to music.

caxiashp 5 years ago
lol Emo is an invetion or just a name if you will to disgregate one band from another regardless if it's good or it sucks. I mean, either way it could suck or rock but no, lately everything reduces to I like emo, I like poperpop I like punk rock, I like hardcore; Like you couldn't like a band just because you like it :(
