  • PERFECT!

  • lol

  • Finally(!).... I am posting the lyrics. It will take a few posts. I'm sort of amazed that people are still watching this!.... In response to the "why didn't you include this" questions that pop up: Our senior pastor, Mark Brewer, did a 21-week series on the history of the church, 1 week per century. This is a response to his series and what he chose to cover, not a categorical statement on church history.... Thanks to all who are still clicking in, and apologies to Billy Joel.

  • LYRIC POST 1:

Pentecost, Palestine, Barbarians, Paul gets a sign

Neglected widows, martyred Stephen, Gentile vs. Jew

New Téstament, getting tribal, Gnostic gospels, Holy Bible

Jamnia, Revelation, word of God is true

    Martyrs, Di-ocletian, Polycarp, Domitian

Church learns, Nero burns, Christians underground

    Chi-Rho, basilica, Vita Evangelica

Nicea, Who was Jesus, Christians start to rebound

  • LYRIC POST 2:

CHORUS: We didn’t start the fire

    It’s been always burning

    Since the world’s been turning

    We didn’t start the fire

    Though we didn’t light it

    And we cannot fight it

  • LYRIC POST 3:

St. Patrick, Monastery, Visigoths are pretty scary

Pope Leo, St. Jerome, forgetting how to read

Mohammed writes the Koran, Convert or die to Islam

Where’s the Pope, church brings hope, the Venerable Bede

Dark ages, knights and pages, east & west will split in stages

Monks’ skuills, cathedrals, Charlemagne starts to reign,

Methodias, Constantinople, Peasants, clergy, serfs & nobles

    Augustine, Irene, everything goes Byzantine

    (CHORUS)

  • LYRIC POST 4:

Cluny, bubonic plague, Vikings, Saracens invade

William conquers, priests & monks, and Jerusalem gets sacked

Flying buttress, St. Claire, célibacy, worship Mary

Knights Templar, stained glass, Sultan Saladin gets whacked

Mendicants, Avignon, Albértus Magnus, Genghis Khan

Aquinas, Maimonides, Gentle Francis óf Assisi

Summa bono, Faith & reason, say God bless you when you’re sneezin’

Just War, Crusades galore, but who are we fighting for?

    (CHORUS)

  • LYRIC POST 5:

Competing popes, not much hope, Joan of Arc makes her mark

John Wycliff, Thomas Kempis, Canterbury Tales

    Michelangelo, Siena, Leonardo and Vienna

    Reformation, printing press, Guttenberg prevails

John Calvin, Erlich Zwingle, indulgences for the kingly

Martin Luther pounds the door, Here I stand, I’ll do no more

    (CHORUS)

  • LYRIC POST 6:

King James Bible, John Locke, Galileo, J.S. Bachj

Anabaptist, Guy Fawkes, Blaise Pascal, John Knox

Puritans preach denial, Salem witches go on trial

Enlightenment or transcendance, we declare our independence

Whitfield makes us all Awaken, Pentecostals get us shakin’

Darwin teaches evolution, Marx preaches revolution

    Jesus freaks, immigration, nuclear annihilation

Overwhelmed by information, who will save this generation?

  • LYRIC POST 7:

CHORUS: We didn’t start the fire

    It’s been always burning

    Since the world’s been turning

    We didn’t start the fire

    And when we are gone

It will still burn on and on and on and on.....

  • I have to admit this was pretty neat, I loved the line, "Everything goes Byzantine"

Only beef, it says "worship Mary" when it should say "venerate Mary". Worship is only given to God, while the saints are venerated.

    Anyways pretty clever.

  • yehey! we're now all theologians! we now know all of church history ;P

  • I would really love to know the lyrics....

  • The only possibly way to make this song bad is for Justin bieber to sing it

  • AWSOME

  • awesome,loved it.

  • I think this should be turned into a Disney World ride with animatronics. I think it could be done similar to the Tea Cups ride.

  • Excellent!!! Very Clever and very concise!

  • I like it, can you please post the lyrics? Please...

  • AWESUM!

  • "Sultan Saladin gets whacked..." This whole video is really clever. Good work. :-)

  • can i get the lyrics of this?

    please...

    its so very nice...

  • EXCELLENT!

  • where can i find the lyrics ^o^ heh

  • What do they sing ad 1:01

  • @SanderDolce

1:01 -- "Christians start to rebound"... and then the chorus

  • @jsbatchler what do they sing in the chorus

  • @SanderDolce -- "We didn't start the fire, it's been always burning since the world's been turning...."

  • Hilarious and wonderful!

  • can you put the lyrics?

i can't understand all of it

  • @anjjinho

-- I plan to, but haven't gotten around to it yet.... soon....

  • @jsbatchler it has been a year D; where are the lyrics lol

  • "Say God Bless you when you sneeze"'....eheheh

  • Wonderfully done! Great job.

  • Wait, George Whitefield gets mentioned, but no sign of John Wesley?

  • I was kind of hoping that this would be more of a "speed reading"/"star wars in 30 seconds"-style summary instead of music video.

Also, the Nestorians and the Monosyphites get shafted in this. They deserved some attention.

  • bravo!

  • Good video, bad sound. Transcripts would help.

  • Great choices for artwork too.

  • Some of the best of humanity, some of the worst. Holy men and deluded warriors. Love and hate. Almost no role for women. Power freaks and ascetics. People of faith and faithless people of fearful reactivity. Seems accurate to me.

  • That was fabulous. I am in the midst of Christian History class in seminary and while I have a great teacher, this was masterfully done.

  • +1 for working in Dr. Strangelove.

  • Excellent!

  • This is very interesting! Incredible work! (It's theologically biased however. I think I can come close to picking out the perspective of the writer on several issues based on the wording and pictures. )

  • Excellent!

  • My husband loves church history, liked this video very much, but laughed and asked about Striper and the Christian Rock movement :)

  • Transcripts, transcripts, where, oh, where could I find the transcripts??

    Great video!

  • Thanks for the effort; THIS is worth watching!

  • Thanks for this. I love the Church, I love Church history, and I am a fan of Billy Joel's music. Now that I'm out of seminary and ordained, I still love to read church history. I might even show this video to adult classes at my parish as a brief introduction.

  • Amazing stuff. Thanks for taking the time...I can tell this took a while, but it's worth it...thanks!
