TYR is an amazing album! The good Sabbath albums of the 1990s were TYR and Dehumanizer I like Cross Purposes and Forbidden but not as much as TYR and DH
First time I heard this was on a cassette sampler "Play it loud and pass it on"..this song blew me away and the other great song on that cassette was Heading For Tomorrow(Gamma Ray)
TYR is fucking amazing. An awesome follow up record to Headless Cross. I personaly love Tony Martin's lyrics, they are more philosophical more worth interpreting after reading them and connect them to the music.
Killer song and killer album. Tony Martin is after Ronnie James Dio best singer of Black sabbath. This era of Black sabbath is very underrated, much cause of the crappy grunge that was so popular back at that time. But, this music stand the test of time. Timeless.
I'm not saying Tony Martin is not a good vocalist. It's just that the concept of Black Sabbath is conceived by most fans as either Ozzy- or Dio-fronted. They're not so wrong after all. The albums with Ozzy and Dio just can't compare to the others. No matter if it's Tony Martin, Ian Gillan or whoever else... The 2 best non-Ozzy-non-Dio albums, in my opinion, are Born Again and Headless Cross. As regards Tyr, it is (along with Forbidden) one of the worst. :/
@ElgartheWise Well I must be a raging homo, seeing as Ozzy is by far Sabbath's worst era. Many of Tony's best riffs were from that era, but Ozzy's laughable whining/wailing was really holding them back. He really is an awful vocalist.
@psudeoaccount Maybe you don't like his voice, he isn't so good i admit. But the ambiance when Ozzy sung in Black Sabbath was the best, and Ozzy is responsible of that. You don't need to be a great vocalist to do a great job as a singer, it also deepends on the feeling.
Toni Martin and Cozy Powell made me love Sabbath a lot. This era made me get into them more and more! Many might not agree but this is and always will be my favorite Sabbath era...
When it comes to Tony most people mention Tyr and Headless Cross but I have to throw Cross Purposes in there as well. It was one of the albums that made me fall in love with Heavy Metal. Thaks guys for introducing real music to my life, hail to the Sabbath Stones from Hungary.
@deceased32 Dio shoulda been leader on Eternal Idol,Headless Cross,TYR,Cross Purposes and Forbidden,I mean they're all great LP/CD's
as they were, but had Dio stayed on and fronted these albums herein, could you imagine how good all those woulda been??Martin is cool too, don't get me wrong
@deceased32 It's not about the singer. The difference between this and the Ozzy stuff is in the music. And btw, Dio and Martin make Black Sabbath sound like one of the best heavy metal bands in the world.
Tony Martin was great in Black Sabbath. "Headless Cross" is a masterpiece and the other albums featuring him are great, too. I love Black Sabbath and all of their stuff, from Ozzy to Tony Martin.
guys stop comparing ozzy with dio and tony it's ridiculous. even if I was singing with BS all songs would kick ass.. they're all brilliant and f*ckin talented and I love every one of them.
Very very good album this one. This album along with Headless Cross is full of really great idea´s. Got every album with Tony Martin in it´s original except "Forbidden". Need to get that one as well. Tough one´s to get a hold of though.
This album getting bad reviews, wasn't that more of a US thing? I think the response here in Europe was more favorable. I'm from Sweden, and before the internet days I never saw a review of this album that was not either good or spectacular. Around here, Tony Martin was always a very respected singer and still is. In fact we love him more than ever now, since we don't get any new music from the so called real Sabbath.
As MUCH as I LOVE Ozzy.... I think in MY opinion, Dio and Gillan were better singers for sabbath. they hit songs and aspects that just... wow they blow your mind.
Tony Martin is so understimated...In my opinion, him and Dio are the 2 truly amazing singers in Black Sabbath's history. Of course, Ozzy had a unique style and hype, but if we're talking about real vocal talent, he can't be compared to Martin or Dio.
@jlr41877 Definately an awesome singer, in DP and in Black Sabbath as well...I would say his style was a bit more "rockish" for Sabbath though however, his vocal talent is unquestionable. Yes, I do like the Gillan era as well. People think that whoever likes/prefers the other eras and not Ozzy's, is disrespecting Sabbath or something which is not true - no one is questioning Ozzy's talent on stage or his unique voice, but you cannot possibly say he's more talented vocally than Dio or Martin.
@thranduillion Man this is the most clever comment I've ever seen in a Sabbath video.I never actually liked Ozzy's high pitched voice (though some people like it and I'm not against them) but that's my taste.Personally I like Dio 1st and Tony Martin 2nd.
Yes ... i think the same, in terms of vocal talents, pitch control and range dio tops then tony martin. Ozzy had the fortune of being in the original line-up and doing all the classics.
Cozy has always been one of my drumming hero's. He is one of the drummers that have inspired me in my drumming since the 70's,.... I agree with you,..... I miss Cozy!!!
Bill Ward only listens to the OZZY stuff now. But I agree Tony did some amazing songs post Ozzy. If they hadn't booted Ozzy at the time he would have probabally O.D. on something. He needed the break and wake up. I love Ozzy don't get me wrong. I would like to see them write a new album together.
woah, yake it easy there...."ozzy has nothing on Tony Martin?.... ozzy was there when they formed, his unique vocal married with the power of tony, bill and geezer is what CREATED black sabbath,,,, tony martin can sing great but come on if you try to tell anyone that ozzy cant compare to him, well.... your on your own.... which is fine with me
Don't you hate the assholes who only listen to the Ozzy stuff? Fuck them, they're missing out on some of Sabbath's best material! Ozzy has NOTHING on Tony Martin!
I wish they'd put the other Tony Martin albums on itunes, they only seem to go as far as The Eternal Idol then they have Reunion on it and they miss out Headless Cross, Tyr, Cross Purposes and Forbidden. I can't find them in CD shops either!
Very much in the vein of "Children of the Sea" in the intro....and those harmonized vocals in the begining kinda remind me of queen....pretty neat stuff!
been a Sabbath fanatic since age 13, took me 10 years to find the Tony Martin era stuff listenable, and DAMN glad I found the TYR album. This one, Jerusalem, and Valhalla are all among the most excellent tunes I've ever heard
A hugely underrated album. I had it on tape when I was 11(the year it came out), but it disappeared somewhere.. Haven't heard it since then.. Thanx for posting!=)
All Sabbath eras was great but my favorite was the Ozzy one ... Simply cuz he was the first and that era was the longest lastin' but every era was different from each antoher. Tony Martin sure did fit well with Sabbath too.
