  • isnt that the v v"s (village volunteers) snare drum? Because i know you used it in niagara this year for the muster.

  • @cartoonman12345 - Yes it is. Hmm, who is this? Did we jam?

  • @calism23 Ya my name is Stuart i am in the fort york fife and drum corps and we jamed in th night jaming sesh

  • @cartoonman12345 at fort george this year

  • where do u get an old american revolution marching snare like that? can you just buy them from a shop or online?

  • @wadoryu2u

    Yeah, from Cooperman-dot-com

  • @calism23 where do you get sticks like that from

  • @TheDragonmaster18 - Those are from Cooperman. Reamer also makes that class of sticks.

  • @calism23 can you use those sticks on modern drums

  • @TheDragonmaster18 - Well, I don't think they would last very long doing rim shots on metal rims. You'd have to tape them up, but they're too good looking and expensive to cover up ($20-30). I just watched your feature video - nice chops.

  • @calism23 thanks dude. im more into the southern style drumming which is kind of like what you did except a lot more arm movement

  • i have to say every time I see this video I say WOW. as a fellow drummer I can fully understand the technical skill it takes to play a piece like that so well. Thanks for being awesome.

  • where'd u get the snare?

  • also its run by Steve Hudak, and

J.J. Newbary just incase you guys r wondering

  • killer song love to hear a fife thrown into that, by the way how long have you been playing??? you sound like youve been playin for years. keep playing! James Old barracks fife&drum corp

  • Thanks. This is actually an Old Guard drum solo - no fifes. I've been playing for almost 30 years now. I've been working on the fife and I just might put something on here.

    Where is your corps located?

  • my corps is located in Trenton NJ. you guys are in albany right?

  • Love your videos! I'm learning this song now, got the sheet music from the Village Volunteers website....I've been playing along with your video, this is a great solo and you did a great job playing it.

    -Kevin

Excelsior Brigade Fife and drum corps.

  • Thank you, very much. I'm glad you found our website useful too - you can thank your band director, Ken, for helping me set up the website.

I hear that some of you will be at the No Foolin' Jam in Albany. Maybe I'll see you there.

  • I would love to here that with some fife. I can't seem to find a sample of that tune with fife and drum. I have the sheet music but I find that sometimes it is easyer to remember the score with a melody. Good job by the by!!

  • Thanks for the comment. I was told that this is just a drum solo by someone who is in Old Guard - they don't play it anymore. But with a name like Flower of the Alps, it seems like there would be a fife part.

  • Absolute excellent , keep it up ! / regards from sweden !

  • Now that deserves a brawny napkin!

  • You are f'ing good. Now I want to start practicing snare and do more than just play drums at church every sunday!

  • If you're in the Albany area, you should visit our corps when our fall rehearsals start up.

  • Albany in NY or CA?

  • NY

...(YouTube tells me my comment is too short and spaces didn't work, so...)

  • Are you the person in this video?

  • Yeah

  • All right! If I ever do visit that side of the country, how could I find the corps?

  • Well, I thought you might be from this area - we're always looking for new talent.

  • aaah shiyot. I'm in NV.

I would love to be in a drum corps. My HS marching band was such crap. We had only 2 decent drummers, and the rest of the line never cared to practice, and had no discipline.

  • dud wow i thougt ive seen you somwhere i drumed next to you at westbrook jam like two years ago

  • I wouldn't be surprised - I've been at the Westbrook muster for the last 4 years. You do look kinda familiar.

I like your videos - I've been wanting to get a fifer to join me for a while now.

  • wow dude.. yes please

  • Hey, thanks.

  • where'd you get the field drum? i always thought it would be cool to have a real civil war snare drum, or whatever

  • The drum is a loaner from my corps: The Village Volunteers Fife & Drum Corps. We purchase them from Cooperman, (add a "dot com" for their website).

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, YouTube doesn't always email me anymore, for some reason, when I get comments.

  • Man, I could'nt site read the first measure!

    -Very good sight reading skills!

  • Thanks for the encouragement. I used to be a pretty slow site reader. What helped me was to hand rewrite parts out for myself as I was learning them. You really develop fast pattern recognition when you write it out.

  • ha if want something more challenging u should buy the blue devils grevious groove just type in on youtube blue devils and pick any vid and ull see how badass they r

  • do u use reamers?

  • Ugh, that hurts. I say that because the answer is "yes UNTIL I BROKE THEM". My only pair, too, and I believe that Reamer is now out of business. However, in this video I am using Cooperman, but they just don't compare to my good old Dan English.

  • awsome sight reading :)

  • Hey, thanks.

  • thanks for posting this. a friend of mine has been working on this song for a while, i've tried a few times and can get about halfway through before giving up. this is really helpful though

  • Cool. What corps are you guys with?

  • i'm with the Towpath Volunteers fife & drum corps. There are a few good videos of us if you search for them. we just got back from the st. patricks day parade in Savannah, Ga, and if you ever get a chance to go, do it, because it was awesome

  • Yeah, I just checked out your corps, and even found a clip of that parade. You guys sound good, large corps, very full sounding.

  • what is with the shoulder movment...

  • Yeah, I know. I'm struggling through it a little.

  • well at least ur dont show it...i havent looked at it yet so i cant say

  • Huh? You took the time to write a comment, but you haven't even watched it? Were my shoulders that distracting?

  • well since u arent playing with a sling...it is a little distracting.

  • hey umm can you tell me the name of that type of snare that you are playing with in this video because i was thinking of buying one and whenever i ask people if they have this drum they keep thinking that im talking about drumline snares

  • its called a field snare.

  • Rope Tension snare drum

You can get one at Florance Drums or go for the Cooperman which I believe it is a Cooperman in the video.

  • Excellent ! Merci.

  • That is great! you are a VERY good on the snare! I wish I was half as good!

    Thanks Again,

    ~Drummer7rf

  • Hey, thanks! I appreciate that.

  • Wow! That was great! Maybe in a few months I can work that up, too. Well, I can hope and try, at least....

  • nice, but where are the dynamics????

  • Cool!

  • isnt that the guy from AFV wit his sister?

  • nope

  • Thanks! We worked pretty hard on it. It's still not as good as i'd like it, but like i said in the description, some of the drummers have only been playing for about a year and a half or so, so there was only so much we could do. It was hard to hear all the different rudiments because of the echo, but what ya gonna do...

Have you seen the Old Guard live? My corps has played for them at Fort Meyer(where they are stationed).

  • I've seen them at the Westbrook Muster a few times, and at Fort Ti. Actually one of the lead snares used to be in our corps.

  • Sorry one more, what sticks are you using? Are they Coopermans? They look like Halifax's to me.

  • Nice Playing. Yes i have met Josh Salazar, he was at freezer jam 2007 which my corps hosted. My brother is in the 42nd highlanders which Josh was in for a little bit. I'm planning on eventually joining them once i graduate out of my corps.

  • After I saw your comment I watched your solo. Nice job!

  • Josh is definitely in the Old Guard, and definitely has chops. He also plays with the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment Band of Music from Lafayette, IN.

    Thanks for the videos!

  • Swiss Rudiments *******

    vidimah

  • Just saying you are such an awesome drummer man and your interp is pretty awesome too, like on those 10s and what not. Any chance u have a yahoo or AIM to talk drumming with?

  • I do have an AIM account and I'm not apposed to doing that. But, rather than post my account name here in public, send me an email first. Sound good?

  • Our old drumline instructor is playing for some drum and fife corps with those old drums...heard of Josh Salazar at all? Don't know if you're affiliated with any group or anything but just wondering.

  • I'm with the Village Volunteers from Delmar, NY (near Albany). What corps is Josh from? What area?

  • Well, it's some official military something er rather. He marched with Phantom Regiment for a couple years playing timpani but he always had some intense chops on keyboards, tenors, but especially snare.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what the group is called. All I know is that they tour around and play for presidential things and other stuff of that nature.

  • I believe you are referring to the Army's Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps; that's actually where this piece is derived from. Do a search for them, 'cause there are some videos of them and you may spot your friend, Josh. His name actually sounds familiar.
