Waiters in the US are not greedy. They make so little that when taxed on 10% of what they sold as calculated as tips, the paycheck is often very little or even nothing. In the US tip 15% for standard service, 10% for weak, 20% for strong. Tip nothing if the server was rude. Complain all you want but if you don't tip you are stealing from the server, you are a bad person, you shouldn't be eating out and expect to have no friends once they find out how cheap you are. "When in Rome" people.

I always tip 8% of the check without taxes and the price at the normal menue price if using a coupon to the penny, I keep light change so I give them exactly 8%.

It is reasonable. I often tip 20% for excellent service. But a routine transaction for service is, and has always been 15%

No, that's not the customers problem. That's something the server will have to live with. Credit cards are convenient. Look I'm not saying don't tip. I worked in restaurants for years in the US and in Ireland and Scotland. I know what its like to serve and we waited on. Look at yourself insisting on 20% tip and in cash. Its unreasonable. If you are a waiter, put yourself in the shoes of the customer. That will make you a better waiter.

There is also the part where if you have more than 6 people dining in, some waiters have to charge gratuaty charge because sometimes that group of people may think that they dont have to tip even if they receive the best service. How much more it would cost if the companies were paying salaries instead. Your local restaurants would love to charge $50 for your steak, but they would rather charge a reasonable price and keep your business. When I'm at a bar, I tip based on a combination of quality of service and difficulty of the drink. The cost of the drink itself doesn't enter into it. Opening a beer or pouring a shot isn't more difficult or time consuming if you order top shelf.

If I order a beer, and the bartender reaches into the cooler directly in front of me, pulls a beer out, opens it and sets it in front of me, that is NOT worth a dollar tip. And I don't care if they charge 5 bucks a beer.

A server have to pay a % of the sale to bartender, host, bussboy n food runner. So, if your check was for $50, 15% is $7.50, you left $5. Server have to tip-out 4% of the sale, 4% of 50 is $2, so $3 is left to the server, but wait, servers pay taxes from an stimated 18% of tips base on the sale, a 18% that was actually 10% oh, n servers not only take your order n bring the food to the table, they also clean, restock, make some of the beverages, salads, etc.

What's the point? The point is my check for 40hrs worth of work is about $80 after taxes, and half of that I never see as it goes straight to insurance... If nobody tipped me I would pretty much have to live off of $40 per week... That doesn't even cover the cost of the gas I use to get to work.

If you have some complaint about your food, take it up with the cook, not your well-meaning server. You have to understand that most waiters/waitresses don't get payed an hourly minimum wage because they're expected to cover the difference in tips. You don't have to reward bad service, but by not tipping at all, you're denying some hard-working people a livable wage.
