Waiters in the US are not greedy. They make so little that when taxed on 10% of what they sold as calculated as tips, the paycheck is often very little or even nothing. In the US tip 15% for standard service, 10% for weak, 20% for strong. Tip nothing if the server was rude. Complain all you want but if you don't tip you are stealing from the server, you are a bad person, you shouldn't be eating out and expect to have no friends once they find out how cheap you are. "When in Rome" people.
i don't tip .... ever. far as i'm concerned waiters are just doin' their jobs..... they don' t like the crappy pay? then get another job! .. sheesh...
I always tip 8% of the check without taxes and the price at the normal menue price if using a coupon to the penny, I keep light change so I give them exactly 8%.
@Tihbialdunav Just cause you (and many people in the service industry) say it is doesnt make it so. Its a blatant ploy to make people feel bad for not tipping more. 15% is not only standard. It is reasonable. I often tip 20% for excellent service. But a routine transaction for service is, and has always been 15%
@ewanfraser , since you are giving advice here, you should know a credit card tip often doesn't reach the server. Many restaurant owners withhold apercentage of it, and so does the government. Always tip in cash.
No, that's not the customers problem. That's something the server will have to live with. Credit cards are convenient. Look I'm not saying don't tip. I worked in restaurants for years in the US and in Ireland and Scotland. I know what its like to serve and we waited on. Look at yourself insisting on 20% tip and in cash. Its unreasonable. If you are a waiter, put yourself in the shoes of the customer. That will make you a better waiter.
There is also the part where if you have more than 6 people dining in, some waiters have to charge gratuaty charge because sometimes that group of people may think that they dont have to tip even if they receive the best service. ALSO KEEP IN MIND IF YOU PLAN TO BE A FREQUENT CUSTOMER: The better you tip waiters, the best service you can expect from that waiter in the future.;)
When you buy a car, house, or insurance, the agent gets a commission. They live off of percentage of sales. Their services make your purchase easier. How much more it would cost if the companies were paying salaries instead. Your local restaurants would love to charge $50 for your steak, but they would rather charge a reasonable price and keep your business. Instead, they pay the servers a state minimum hourly rate of $2.13 in anticipation you will tip accordingly.
LOL! Is this video a joke or for real? This video is encouraging letting a restuarant RAPE your wallet. OMG!! They want you to tip everybody but the kitchen sink and busboy. This is exactly what is wrong with tipping, people just expect you to drop money when you dine out for every little thing. Why in the hell do I need a restroom attendant?? I can get a paper towel for myself, as far as im concerned, those guys are gay and watch other men piss. Tipping is pointless, I'll always think that. :)
A new web based business is going after bad service with a TIPZERO (No Tip) for bad service, while educating and encouraging generous tips for those who meet or exceed expectations. Search tipzero.com on youtube to see our promo video. IT'S WORTH LOOKING AT!!!
When I'm at a bar, I tip based on a combination of quality of service and difficulty of the drink. The cost of the drink itself doesn't enter into it. Opening a beer or pouring a shot isn't more difficult or time consuming if you order top shelf.
If I order a beer, and the bartender reaches into the cooler directly in front of me, pulls a beer out, opens it and sets it in front of me, that is NOT worth a dollar tip. And I don't care if they charge 5 bucks a beer.
If you can't afford to tip, stay at home. Do NOT ask how much drinks are! If you have to ask you can't afford to drink more than the Nati Lite you have in your frig! Do NOT ask for blended drinks after 10, it wastes our time and my quarter tip will make us put almost NO liquor in it!
Eoublue I agree w u I usedvto be a waiter and a bartender and I hated that u served them and is not that u want to get tip more but it just people are not considerate to know that we work hard to please u n we work for u bit come on......!!!!!! Women....!!!!!! Would u do it to ur husbands which they dont appreciate u???!?? I rest my case...
A server have to pay a % of the sale to bartender, host, bussboy n food runner. So, if your check was for $50, 15% is $7.50, you left $5. Server have to tip-out 4% of the sale, 4% of 50 is $2, so $3 is left to the server, but wait, servers pay taxes from an stimated 18% of tips base on the sale, a 18% that was actually 10% oh, n servers not only take your order n bring the food to the table, they also clean, restock, make some of the beverages, salads, etc.
@eoublue This is not true EVERYWHERE. Man we all really need to get together and figure out which are the areas that the Wait-staff is getting the worst hourly wage/percentage taken out and tip THOSE people according to that, and everywhere else where they're making a normal minimum wage, only tip them if the service was prompt & good.. .
The cheapest people to tip at restaurants are the Chinese , middle east and the Indonesian people . Don't expect any from them because more likely they're not gonna tip you .
If you can't afford to tip don't eat (or drink) out. Cook your own food fatties. Or maybe they should just jack up the prices of your food so servers can actually make minimum wage. Either way they'll get paid. I think everyone should be required to work as a server :) Or maybe we should just get rid of servers since apparently they don't do anything anyway, get off you lazy asses and get your own drinks and food.
@EurekaTrustson42 No.. In America servers get paid about $2.13 per hour in most states, although some states allow wages up to $5... But that is taxed, and it's used to tax your tips... What's the point? The point is my check for 40hrs worth of work is about $80 after taxes, and half of that I never see as it goes straight to insurance... If nobody tipped me I would pretty much have to live off of $40 per week... That doesn't even cover the cost of the gas I use to get to work.
@fosterslover Please, if you think people not paying spare change for tips are considered human scum, then you have not seen the true ugly side of humanity. I don't live in such romantic locations such as France where the food is worth paying the extra dollar, unlike America, where the food is disgusting, not to mention the service. Do not fear, I do pay my tips from time to time when I feel it is necessary. Do understand that the comment you replied is two years old, I was a bit immature then.
If you have some complaint about your food, take it up with the cook, not your well-meaning server. You have to understand that most waiters/waitresses don't get payed an hourly minimum wage because they're expected to cover the difference in tips. You don't have to reward bad service, but by not tipping at all, you're denying some hard-working people a livable wage. Sorry for the belated reply, but it annoyed me that this was voted the top comment.
As for tippin, it ALWAYS be left in cash, so your server doesn't have to give 35% of it to the IRS-they don't serve your food. Credit card tips are inappropriate.
I have friends who work in the hospitality business, so I know that if you put the tip on the table in cash, they'll definitely get it, but if you put it on your credit card, the boss might end up stealing it!
@GREGORYABUTLER , the owner has to declare all credit card tips on your SSN, so 35% of them go to IRS, which means you owe the money you made come tax season. Yes, credit card tips are terrible: a server gets punished every time.
Hmmm in england you dont have to tp and the people that do tip pay less than 5% percent of the meal and drinks cost probably around 50 cents - 1 dollar in american!

if they dont get any tips.
Only that never happens because the waiters always get enough tip to gain more than the average salary.
So there you go i just proved to you that all this tipping is just a scam!
