The Muppet Show really was a stunning achievement. The fact that you have Judy Collins performing this masterpiece on a puppet show just goes to show you how brilliant Jim Henson was. This fits in perfectly, it does not seem like it was tacked on. I do miss the Muppet Show. . . .
I found the segue between the insane antics of Chef, shooting lettuce; cabbage and coconuts and the seriousness of Judy Collins singing her signature song absolutely fantastic. The timing was absolutely splendid.
By the way, did anyone else notice at 2:34 the sock had below Scooter is visable as he's buncing around. Well maybe that fitting, since he's pretty much being Grouse's puppet! LOL
Being a Jim Henson show... it wouldn't fit the show if at least one Muppet-like character didn't appear in a song. This song is so sad and lovely... it fits her perfectly.
most of the songs judy dose are boring! jeez if i had her vocal power id do something more interesting song wise, and seen in the clows would be boring for the little kids so their all like "lets add some weird bug eyed clowns!" i love that!
The song is interesting, when sung in the original context of the musical it was from. It came out when people were still trying to pluck hit songs from shows. Also, Judy sings it rather boringly.
Well I don't know, I've heard most of what she does and I think almost all her material suits her. She doesn't really have the vocal power of somone like, I don't know, Maria Callas or Anita Baker. Of course this video does not do the song justice. You have to remember, people were queueing up to get on this show for the exposure so they tended to go with what the producers (and especially Hesnon) wanted. Do you remember what they did to Rudolf Nureyev? Talk about undignified.
@zapkvr: excuse me, but a lot of the guest stars were chosen out of their friendship/association with henson, so they wanted to be on the show for the exposure & because they love the henson style, which reminded them of vaudeville but with weird lovable pupets.
I never understood why people misinterpret the song, and have dancing clowns come in. This song is about a wounded woman, and not happy at all. It's bizarre.
but I don't think these clowns are done for the children/adults watching. I think they are somehow to fit in artistically with the song but of course they do look a bit absurd so I think because it didn't work people aren't sure what they are meant to be doing.
@EloiseDecember Well after looking this performannce a second time or another seperate video, there does seem to be some pantimiming of key lyrics in the song. The lyrics are meant to be ironic of corase, and while it's not obvious I do think could be understood as contrast between frivolousness and alienation.
Judy Collins voice is so amazing!

Since Jim Henson is playing the Swedish Chef, i'm not feeling insulted at all
it wouldn't actually even matter if Jerry Nelson or Frank Oz or anyone else of the Muppets-cast played him
I'm Swedish myself and i'm all O.K with that

I feel sorry for poor Kermit when he's crying, saying "What am I going to do?" Such emotion, tissue in hand and all. :'(

Kermit: "Tell him about all the people who'll be out of work."
Scooter: "Sorry, Kermit."
Kermit: "Including you!"
Scooter: Wait right here."
