Why didn't other nations need civil wars to abolish slavery? Mr. Paul, go back to junior high. Other nations were industrializing. Their economies were based on industry and trade. The South had an agricultural economy that depended on slaves to harvest crops for export. Other nations didn't need slavery; the South did. The only way to make the South get rid of it was at gunpoint. Pretty damn simple if you ask me.

Every history major I talked to when I went to my daughters' college graduation understands that the "War Between the States" may have been started by South Carolina, but the central government did all they could to goad them into it.
