This Episode was the 3rd Season opening. I got Seasons 1 and 2 on DVD... Hope whoever owns the rights to Gimme a Break will release it on DVD SOON! and the other seasons as well.
I have been looking for this performance for more than 20 years and stumbled across it today (11/5/11). I remember seeing this episode of Gimme a Break back in the 1980's. I loved this song then and could never manage to see that episode again. And here we have it - great song and great version from two wonderful singers!! Thank you for posting this!
What an inspiration ....Andy gibb and Nell carter with her soprano voice ...im deeply touched i remember seeing this when i was a kid...back in the 80s when it first aired thnx for posting ..
..we love you & still have you in- heart- ..especially our choir. We know you're introducing Andy to Mr. (Perry) Anderson (PHS choir instructor) & making sure that all of your influences remain in the flow-
can some please upload the episode when loses all this weight and she has a crush on her weight loss consouler and her friends rats her out It's called "A Way To A Man's Hear
Does anyone know about the musical Nell Carter co-starred in the 70s titled "Cindy" and where to obtain a copy please contact me. Thank you. It was the only production of an all black casted Cinderella story shown once. I was 18 - now 52 and it was never re-broadcasted. It was a magnificent production with A 4 star ratings and a treasure. Like so many great made-for-tv movies they're in the backroom. Queen of the Stardust Ballroom was another gem and hard-to-fined. Thanks for helping.
I really like this video, I think it represents the real Andy and not just the superstar. It must have been wonderful to share his life on a daily bases and be considered one of his friends. I will miss him forever.
Thank you Nell for bringing such JOY into the World....... Rest in Joy Nell!!!!!!!! You are loved and missed,,,,, you are in my heart and you made a differance......with your talent and your gift of life....... Thank you GOD for her presence...
Such magic from such angelic voices...amazing...I love this version..sends chills up my spine..they both sang with such passion....thank you Nell and Andy and RIP
LOL! To the person who says the other Bee Gees look like frogs!! Robin is not conventionally good looking, granted, but Barry was a real stunning looker when he was younger and still aint too shabby these days either! Andy was the sweetest thing ever though!-agreed on that one! But really, as far as talent is concerned and actually being a good person, what do looks matter? All the Bee Gees were ace!!! Miss you always sweet Andy.....
Can't wait for Season 3 to come out on DVD! If I remember right, it wasn't too far into the season when Andy appeared. It is a CLASSIC moment in T.V. history!
Thanks so much for posting Andysdesire! Won't EVER forget the cast of Gimme A Break.
that generation of actors are gone or very old. There is only one living Gibb. I miss the good ole days when things were simple and magical. I am proud to be a part of that generation.
@tarapup12 Actually there are two...Barry and Robin are alive and well and just performed on the Season Finale on American Idol....that performance is on yt as well....yes...nothing can match the music of that generation...Andy GIbb was a timeless, classic performer...RIP Andy....you are not forgotten..
I loved this show. I always wanted Nell to be my big sister, she was such a loving person. I cried when the show ended and when she passed I couldnt believe it. She is missed!
This performance is just magic!! They are both so talented!!! I love how she swoons and about passes out at :58! Andy had that effect on women and still does! I've never heard a man sing love songs with such emotion as Andy did! Love that man! I agree they are both singing with the angels now! RIP to both! You are missed!!!!
Hard to believe this episode is getting close to the 3 decade mark!!!Where has time gone?No matter this episode, this show and those 2 wonderful performers are and always will be timeless!!
I went many years ago to see Nell Carter in concert with a best friend of mine. Nell and my best friend have passed on, but will be remember, as we all remember Andy Gibb. This is a special video. Thank God for recordings. Without them, we would only have memories to depend on.
I'm not exactly sure when this episode originally aired, but my late husband recorded this on VHS for me about 20 years ago. I still have the cassette, one of my most beloved possessions!
Andy didn't commit suicide. He died on March 10,1988 at the John Radclliff hosptal at 8:45 a.m. London time.He died of a heart ailment from his years of doing drugs. He just turned 30 years old on March 5th.
andy gibb did this show gimme a break in 1983 i think or 1985, so how could they say in memory of him, when andy passed away in 1988 of heart inflammation, a disease he had for years, not suicide.
Wow, I haven't seen this since it aired back in 198-ehem. As I remember it (or mis-remember) Mr. Gibb committed suicide shortly before this epidisode aired. . .so sad. In the original broadcast, after this scene faded to black, they left "In Memory of Andy Gibb" God bless both of them. . .and Thank You, Thank You for these sweet memories!
Andy Did not commit suicide. He had a heart ailment. Myocarditis Please get your facts straight. He would not have left all of who love him on purpose.
Well, in my defense, I was 13 when Andy Gibb died, and I only remember the news headlines mentioning his suicide. I see that that's not exactly correct, but I also remember the part about drugs contributing to his death. May he rest in peace. I know how much he was idolized and his music enjoyed. I'm African American and I remember my sisters, for the longest, used to keep a poster of Andy on their bedroom wall. . .next to one of John Travolta from "Welcome Back Kotter". . .hehehehehehe
WOW!!! What memories!!! Miss them both so much.......Nell you are so love and we mis that voice.....................God is so blessed. he gets to hear it live every day.
This is wonderful! This is as good as the original and even better in ways. Doesn't matter how they died. They both made beautiful music that is a joy to listen to. That music is their legacy.
In response to a some of the comments, yes, Andy did emulate his brother Barry. He was actually quite obsessed about it, often complaining that they wouldn't treat his brother Barry the way he was being treated.
He did abuse cocaine. His death was not from cocaine directly but rather the damage its use caused to his heart.
I know all this first-hand because I was his pianist/conductor during that period. That's me in the opening shot in the gray outfit near the keyboard.
I just want to say thanks Andy has always been in my heart and always will i never had the chance to see him live but would have loved too he gave so much of himself to so many people and got so little of it in return i am glad that people like you let us know the true Andy and thanks Lov and Hugs Heather
yes Andy has Barry style and even they look alike but Andy has his own voice and certain emotion that trascends into his songs ,a real artist that gives own life to his work. How can i mend a broken heart? in Andy's voice is a piece of art.
@eidco Hi John! Thanks for sharing with us your first-hand knowledge. It means a great deal to me, as I am sure it does to many many others! It was great to see a good shot of you in the opening scene! You were and will alwys be a very special part of Andy's treasured legacy! We all are blessed to know you.
@eidco then you might know, was this a live vocal? i always remembered this from when it was on t.v. you couldn't swing a dead cat without hearing the original for it seemed like years. when these two did it was the first time it registered in my young brain that songs can belong to anyone...
@Putaspellonyou The band did a pre-record of the song and then synced the performance on the air. The Andy and Nell sang live to the track. It's hard to believe this was 26 years ago!
@Putaspellonyou Let's see, do I remember specifics about one rehearsal 26 years ago? lol Not exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was recorded in either one or two takes. They were both real pros.
@eidco Wow, it must have been awesome to work with Andy I wish so much that I could have met him and seen him in concert. It is so sad that he had the cocaine addiction but he truly gave us good memories and songs and for that I am truly grateful. You all did a great job on this show!
They were both coke heads, but god bless them, they were talented and this was a beautiful performance. RIP Miss Carter and Andy. I look forward to hearing you sing in heaven.
During that time in history, people were under the assumption that cocaine was not really a "drug" and that it was a safer alternative to hard and harmful drugs.
I don't know who I find more rediculous. I mean Andy Gibb with that miraculous hair is a big contender...but nell carter did...EVERYTHING wrong, not that dress though. They do both sound like cats fighting for the last tuna can. Nell's dancing does lend itslef to be ripped apart but then again...everything wrong. Well since niether of them could act or sing I think we have to call it a tie...each is more ridiculous than the other. May they both RIP, thanks for the laughs
thats just so sick of you....this is aplace for love.....for andy so just keep ur views to yourself ....andy and nell rest inpeace we all love love love you xxxxxxxx

Oh Im sorry Mao. My opinon differs from yours therefore it's not allowed to be heard? funny I was almost certain that I had the right to say pretty much what ever I damn well please And since I happen to find Andy Gibb to be a total tool belt and Nell Carter to be pretty much a spoof of her self I'll express my opinions in spite of your neo-nazi beliefs about what can and can not be said on the public internet forum And since this is a place for love, I'll tell you what I love...freedom, stalin
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
really? Am I disturbing the corpse of Andy Gibb, if I further anger him, will he rise from the grave and feather my hair while singing his dangerous falcetto?
Well you seem to delight in getting other people upset - Take the time to read the rest of the comments and you will find them positive - except for you - Why are you watching Andy Gibb in the first place??. Youtube has your I.P. address on file & therefore your home address - so now I'm signing out and I leave you to them - Just leave the Andy Gibb supporters alone .....please....
i remember this episode. I love Gimme a Break! television was so different then. this is an awesome, classic moment, both full singers full of talent and emotion. They both left us too soon
Thanks for putting this up....This was one of my favorite episodes. I loved Gimme A Break...I loved Nell!!!!! Her voice was so beautiful and then when Andy was on the show...OMG, words can not express how much I loved this episode.....Andy was my favorite out of the brothers...What a talented family with such a tragedy when we lost Andy so young. RIP Andy and Nell.....You will always be loved and missed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful music... We love you Andy and we treasure your music in our hearts. How I wish I was born yesterday that you're still alive and singing... I cry when I watch your music videos, you touched my life... RIP
I was so "in love" with Andy Gibb growing up! When he died I cried! I couldnt have been much more than 10 yrs old! I love Nell too! I was hurt when she passed too!
I remember when he guest starred on Gimme A Break w/her. I was so excited for this episode when I found out he was going to be on it. Ahhh, memories. Ahh, Andy. Now he is up where he belongs, even if he is truly missed for all he was(& could have become)
During the last part of her life, Nell had been living with a life Partner...some Jewish woman. She missed out on perhaps getting married in California...same sex marriage arrangement. Also, Nell had a prickly, disagreeable working relationship with Rosie O'Donnell. I guess Nell was a "closet gay" and Rosie encouraged her to come "out."
@LAHot1 Yes...indeed. It's also sad to believe that fellow singer/actor Telma Hopkins who was Nell's best friend Addy in the show is the lone surviving adult cast member of Gimme A Break.
I´ve never seen Andy SO SIMILATE to his brother Barry as he is here , in this video. The way to sing, the way to stay on stage, the same way to use the arms, the hands.....is a Barry´s twin .
I loved Nell Carter so much and her voice. It is just so hard to believe she is gone. I felt that if i ever met her i would have loved her even more. Rest in Peace Ms Carter.
nell is in heaven im sure of it!! not sure about andy but im sure he is too i do know nell is singing with the angels in heaven and laughing with the chief that played on gimme a break in the 80's
u r very welcome, i was a kid in the 80s and i always some reason looked up to nell carter she was someone i wanted to meet one day! but im sure i will on the other side in heaven..
I ts great to see that I'm not the only person that feels that way!!!my reason for being such a fan is of course a very personal reason and because of her I got through some extremly sad and hard times in my life.
you're not the only one, i truly loved her too. i remember watching it on thurs before hill st. blues, then on saturdays and any other nights they moved it to. i truly became aware of her immense talent watching the reruns. and i got to attend the end portion of her funeral. i always wanted to meet and work with her.
Esta cancion es preciosa, pero cantada por Andy todavia lo es mas, que tristeza que nos dejaras tan pronto, no pudimos disfrutar de ti y de tu voz por mas años pero te llevamos siempre en nuestro corazon.
yea i liked watching gimme a break when i could.. we had to have a antenna on top of a mountain to just get a few channels..when i got 14 my mom and dad divorced and we moved to a place that had cable and i thought i was in heaven haha! nell is sure a talented woman and i hate she died so young..:-(

It saddens me to watch this video because both of them are deceased. They are truly flying up where they belong. May they both rest in peace.

I agree with blondiebabs... perhaps it would be best if you kept your hate-filled comments to yourself... let Andy be at peace.

really? Am I disturbing the corpse of Andy Gibb, if I further anger him, will he rise from the grave and feather my hair while singing his dangerous falcetto?
Cous123Cous 3 years ago
Well you seem to delight in getting other people upset - Take the time to read the rest of the comments and you will find them positive - except for you - Why are you watching Andy Gibb in the first place??. Youtube has your I.P. address on file & therefore your home address - so now I'm signing out and I leave you to them - Just leave the Andy Gibb supporters alone .....please....

During the last part of her life, Nell had been living with a life Partner...some Jewish woman. She missed out on perhaps getting married in California...same sex marriage arrangement. Also, Nell had a prickly, disagreeable working relationship with Rosie O'Donnell. I guess Nell was a "closet gay" and Rosie encouraged her to come "out."

or maybe Nell just recognized Rosie O'Donnell for the uneducated, overopinionated, insecure egomaniac that she is!

The way to sing, the way to stay on stage, the same way to use the arms, the hands.....is a Barry´s twin .
beegeero 3 years ago
For the record, Barry does not have a twin. Robin and the late Maurice were twins. Andy was their younger brother.

I ts great to see that I'm not the only person that feels that way!!!my reason for being such a fan is of course a very personal reason and because of her I got through some extremly sad and hard times in my life.
kevinmazura 4 years ago
you're not the only one, i truly loved her too. i remember watching it on thurs before hill st. blues, then on saturdays and any other nights they moved it to. i truly became aware of her immense talent watching the reruns. and i got to attend the end portion of her funeral. i always wanted to meet and work with her.

Was this song sung on "Gimme a Break" more than once? I seriously remember Nell singing it with Joe Cocker. ????? :(
orvgg 4 years ago
Jennifer Warnes sang it with Joe Cocker, not Nell. It was a number one hit at the time for the two of them.
God Bless
