this video is so ridiculous! LOL "i have 2 sai in my hand, so what's my tactic?... Hmmmm,...kick the other guy!" I could not have laughed so much in my life
@summerdying111 It's not the martial arts, it's the fighter who is trained in it. Obviously they aren't good at coreographing fights, so they are bound to make the martial arts they represent look mediocre.
@KaelNL Sai are defensive weapons - not offensive. They're not sharp, and they're heavy. They're not meant for stabbing or striking, just blocking. :)
Thanks. I teach kobudo. We block with sais. We strike with sais, as they can easily break bone. We punch with them and sometimes we even stab with them, as even the blunt sai will easily penetrate flesh. It's all in the kata.
I was commenting on the choice of the attacks by the sai guy. Although he has sais and the other a staff, he chooses to attack with kicks. Several times. Very flashy and movie like. Nice for a kids demo. Nice kicks too. But I like my demos 2B more realistic
@KaelNL That's like stabbing someone with a butterknife. I own sai, and my friend Sam is teaching me how to use them. They're heavy, but the shape AND the bluntness would make it impossible to penetrate skin. Break bone, or get in between bone - yes. But not pierce skin...
Well then. Let Sam punch you with the pointy (not sharp) end full power to your body.
Then again, maybe safer to watch YouTube, look for "San-Cho Zai - Kata with 3 Sais " Start at 2:50. See how many stabs are in that kata and the easy with which he throws a relatively blunt sai in the wood.
I have no doubt. Our sais are not sharpened. They block, strike and punch weapons. But they can be driven into a body. Then again, I'm sure I can ram a butterknife between ribs through skin.
@KaelNL I ONCE PIERCE MY HAND WITH A NON SHARP SAI IT WAS AN ACCIDENT BUT STILL I HAD A HOLE ON MY HAND SO YEAH IT CAN PENETRATO BECAUSE IT'S SOLID AND IT'S THIN ENOUGH TO GO INSIDE. REMEMBER PHYSCIS THE SMALLER THE AREA, THE BIGGER THE PRESSURE, SO GIVEN THE FACT THAT IT IS A THIN WEAPONG IT CAN RESIST ENOUGH PRESSURE TO GO INSIDE THE BODY.
@KaelNL A stabbing motion is not neccessarily a piercing motion, many thrusting stabbing motions in jo and bo staff forms, but no one expects a staff to travel through someones torso.
True. But not relevant, since we're talking sai here. Did you see the vid I referred to? Name me something you can throw in wood, but can't pierce skin with.
Maybe you use a sai more blunt than that or mine? My sai aren't sharp, though they're certainly not blunt - unlike of course bo and jo. I know our sai can pierce skin and flesh. If only from accidents RandyRhoads1990 mentions.
@KaelNL Sai are farming tools for threshing hay, I've seen Sai that could pierce if you threw it into wood, and Sai that definatly wouldn't pierce if you threw into wood.
If we are talking about Sai as the tool for threshing hay, I don't see why it would be standard for them to be pointy objects that could stab.
If a sai was for threshing hay, indeed you would be right. Well, I won't see the point in repetition, so I'll leave it at this. Some people use use threshing sai for striking, other use sai which can be used in more than one form of attack. Personally, I like the kata with strikes, punches, blocks and stabs. YMMV
@KaelNL I'm not saying that you can't stab with a Sai, I'm just saying don't expect it's thrusting movements to be as all purpose as an actual knife.
Stab somone with moderate force in the abdomen and you'll cause bruising with a sai, with a knife its lethal. Sai thrusts to be lethal would have to be targeted under the arms or at the throat etc it would seem.
@seanw23 A human couldn't do it. But if it were to be used as a projectile weapon from some form of propellant, yes. It'd be like trying to run you through with a solid, blunt, metal cylinder... Impossible.
yeah but doesnt mean the art is from a different country.. . the only flag i saw was korean and the sai was actual a farming tool in okinawa its a pitch fork but just the end
still, it's always been a weapon I've been personally interested in. I saw a sai kata that I found very appropriate being as they were originally designed to combat katana, at least that's what I understand. As long as I can see how and why the movements work, I'd say it's a teachable discipline.
I HATE THE CONTINUOUS NOISES FROM THE GUY WITH THE SAI'S!!!!!!!! SHOUT ONCE (i don't know hot to spell the proper term for it) OR TWICE ON THE REALLY POWERFUL STRIKES BUT NOT EVERY TIME YOU SLASH THE STUPID THING AROUND IN THE AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he fell because the bo staff hit his leg. its kinda hard to see so you have to pause it. and also of course the match sucks. its to 16 wannabee fighters and its choreographed
i thought it was very nice showmanship. but it did not demonstrate the proper use of either weapon. they are both okinawan weapons and you would never see jumpkicks like that or flashy twirls. excellent for entertainment but not at all traditional or accurate

Man i can't wait till my next tournament. I'm a 3rd degree brown belt and im really talented with a staff. Im training hard as hell to perfect my moves so i can fight next match
this is a choreographed demo, and i agree, the do execute poor form (dropping stance, elaborate moves, etc). this video has only served to deter me from this style.
The sai was made to trap and break swords. It can be used to stab very effectively and if you choose not to use it that way then you are merely limiting yourself in its use.
Well it can be used to stab, but here in the vid it looks like he's stabing him trough the heart.
If the opponent is on the ground already you don't have to do this. The Sai is not made for that. The stab is only done very quick to significant bodyparts like the stomach, the inner knees and the armpit were the sensitive lymph node is. Its a defense and only used to
bugger that, its a weapon. if he is on the ground, and you want him dead, you stab him somewhere that is going to kill him, ie heart, throat, eye. i agree that when fighting it is more effective to stab in the places you mentioned, but in reality, you stab them where you can when you can.
also, "It's not for killing." no. it is a weapon, it can be used however the user wants. so if they user wants to kill with them, he most certainly can.
Are you sure about that? A Katana sword is made of one of the most durable steels ever, plus the way its folded and all.
I was under the understanding that the two loops on the Sai hilt, trapped a sword which allowed for the second sai to engage in counter attack. Not really breaking it, since that would really be almost impossible.
actually that is shit. katanas can be made out of whatever you want really. but traditional katanas were made out of whatever the swordsmiths could get there hands on, as there arent many iron or coal deposits in japan. even the top quality damascus steel swords didnt hold up as well as many german or middle eastern steels or sword making methods.
also, the hilts on a sai can also be used to hold it backwards with the point protruding past ones elbow.
Real Katanas are made out of the steel from a riverbed and are folded repeatedly into a powerful, durable finish.
Maybe the shitty ones were made of whatever the makers could get their hands on, but the top quality swords made by skilled makers were very durable. More than any other sword.
from a riverbed? what? why does that even matter? quality of the steel is dependent on the refining process, not whether or not its form a goddamn riverbed.
sorry if this sounds insulting but you sound like a japan fanboy praising these swords. i admit that the best swords were on average more durable for their weight, but these swords were far and few between, as they were very expensive. however, even then the best swordmakers have always come from egypt, persia, etc.
All I am saying is that the way the Katana is formed makes it very durable. there were probably a LOT of a half-assed samurai who had shitty swords, I don't doubt that, but the fact of the matter is, you can't break a katana sword in half with a si.
no shit you cant, sai's weigh too little etc etc. you can however break one with a big hammer/mallet/anything else that is hard and has weight behind it. same goes for alot of swords.
also most people who used these swords were called "bushi", samurai were the japanese equivalent of nobles
actually you can. yes i understand its not easy. but when its caught between both the prongs twisting your wrist with force wont shatter it but it will break it
don't get me wrong, though, you score a 5 from me ;) I just think you'd be able to add those in seamlessly, given your apparent high level of performance
constructive criticism alert: very nice strike response, especially the pound section ~40. coming from a demo team member, also, the distance you two put between is too much too often; just one rush would be great, unless you include an aerial attack to mix up the defense (e.g. jump sidekick @ the bo, who drops down and uses a lateral strike to smack sai back down). moves that reduce the body size (crouch, jumps) while swinging the weapon (while sai is down, crouch into a groundsmack) looks huge

seanw23 1 year ago
@seanw23
In Japanese the plural and singular are the same AFAIK, so yes. Context of the sentence determines what it is.
However, since words like sai, tonfa etc are sort-of adopted in english, I reckon sais is good too. You see both used.
