  • I seriously almost sprayed my monitor at 0:32.

  • The new prize inside the Fruit loops is a Linux distro.

  • Wow I was looking for this commercial on youtube to see if anybody else noticed it too....weird.

  • To kill a Yeti, use Linux.

  • I've only seen the commercial quite recently but was able to notice it right away. Lol Linux is always your best defense.

  • Lol I don't even use Linux but I noticed it.

  • Using Tux the Linux mascot movies/cartoons/commercials/whatever is only allowed if you use a Linux machine to render the video. No Linux machine? Linux distributions are free!

  • @rinkavideos64 what video editing software is available for linux tho?

  • @stephthestar90 I said RENDER, not edit. Also, this was just sarcastic make-fun-of.

  • @rinkavideos64 Linux probably did render it. I heard it rendered Titanic and Avatar scenes.

  • Anybody notice that the abominable snowman looks like George Clinton?

  • @spynae Im glad you saw that too lol

  • dude dont lie you just like iCarly.

  • linux saves the day

  • I was watching tv eating my ramen and i saw that. Of all the places to see tux!!!

  • I noticed that today and was like, OMG i gotta see that again!

  • "he never shares" lol apple reference

  • linux is the secret weapon

  • linux is awful

  • @jpwhits awful? in what way?

  • @mavsuarez in every way?

  • Wow, I guess I'm not the only one who saw this. I would've uploaded my own video to, if it weren't for the fact that I was using an HD receiver, and not a DVR. Oh well, still odd that Tux was in there though.

  • Looks like just an easter egg, and a really good one btw!

  • i'll tell you what hes doing in that commercial. hes being chewed to death by those huskies

  • the wonders of product placement

  • The message is clear. Linux is the secret weapon.

  • OK, as far as I been able to find out ... the Leo Burnett Company commissions adverts for the Kelloggs through a dozen partners.

Of these, one makes 3D animation, they are Mundocom. I found a job listing from 2008. They use Maya, Lightwave, Adobe CS3/CS2 Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects.

  • Every person that loves Linux should go out and buy several boxes of Fruit Loops to show marketers that cross promoting with Linux could be profitable. ;)

  • Probably not intentional, but it is a good viral marketing idea. Other marketers should jump on the bandwagon, because just by have 3 seconds of the Linux mascot in their commercial, Froot Loops brought in "atleast" 14,764 viewers (at the time of me writing this comment) from this video alone, not to mention the thousands seeing mention of it on various Linux blog around the world.

  • @stewieX Yeah but I bet there's only a very small percentage of people who saw that commercial actually know wtf Linux is.

  • Does anyone else notice an analogy here? When refering to the snowman, they say "Wow he never shares" sound like Microsoft anyone? When they take the fruitloops, the abominal snowman chases them because he wants them for himself, again microsoft. And then they use the "secret weapon" on him, which is an object that resembles tux. The secret weapon, tux, could be viewed as linux/open source.

  • @unrealjeff Except that Microsoft does share. They support and promote CentOS and give hackers code to mess with Kinect and the Xbox 360. The company that doesnt share is Apple. No USB or any good ports on their Pads, removed VLC from their appstore, their OS can only run on their hardware unless you do a hackintosh and so on. You guys need to get with the times and before anyone calls bias I've been running Ubuntu for years on my computers.

  • @dinot1985 Please don't express your opinion on something your clearly know nothing about. CUPS was developed by Apple. So every time you print a file on your computer your using code that Apple shared without. They've also shared Webkit, Clang and FreeBSD contributions. I don't for many reasons like Apple, but saying that they don't share and that MS does is just plain wrong.

  • @paldepind lol at you giving me advice? I done my degree in computers mister all mighty. And yes that degree included non Windows coding. You thing I give a sh*t what Apple did regarding printing? So that is an excuse for them to charge high prices for similar spec hardware, control open source in their appstore and deny people who own their products to open them by changing the screwhead type, adding a new port and calling it version 2? lmao get the f*ck out of here.

  • @paldepind You need to brush up on what Microsoft has done for Linux.

    blog.ukfast.co.uk/2011/05/23/microsoft-osg-loves-linux-technologies/

So maybe YOU should know what youre talking about before you yap away princess.

  • @dinot1985 You said: "The company that doesnt share is Apple." That's wrong. Apple has shared lots of code. I never said that's an excuse for their high prices. You're just attacking straw men.

You're right Microsoft are pure crap. But they're pretty close.

Also I don't care whether or not you've got at degree in CS.

  • Tux is everywhere!

  • Q- What the hell is tux doing in a fruitloop commercial?

A- Well.... ot's in x86, ARM, Atom, SPARC, PowerPC..... so actually the only thing left for tux to invade is the fruitloop arch.

  • I remember seeing that commercial on TV myself, and I caught sight of Tux too! How weird to see this making the rounds on the Internet just a few days later.

  • kerneloops

  • Wasn't it a creative commons 3D model?

  • @Tome4kkkk That's a pretty reasonable explanation for it.

  • uhhh.. im not eating what things... uhhh and how can they use Tux for this?! Linux will not be happy :D But Super TUX will give tham hell

  • my friend has some hand sanitizer with a penguin that looks very similar to crystallized renderings of tux (not the original)

  • @lowtone10 on tux' wikiepdia article, the image im talking about is labeled as "Tux Crystal 2nd revision" and the hand gel version doesnt look exactly the same, but similar

  • So it wasn't just me...

  • tux is sweet for kids :o) bravo

  • long live tux :o)

  • haha. funny.

  • "Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted provided you acknowledge me lewing@isc.tamu.edu and The GIMP if someone asks. "

  • Clever marketing trick. Just add some random mascot of anything to your commercial, and voila, it goes viral! … At least within the fanbase of this "anything".

I don't know if this was intentional, but it sure works. And yes, I love Linux and Tux!

  • And the moral of the story: When in trouble. Use Linux.

  • I got all giggly when I saw that. Totally a linux fan-girl :3

  • Subliminal Linux advertising. :)

  • @iGenexis But most people may not even recognise who Tux is.

  • Screw tux the penguin! It looks like Randy Savage came back as an abominable snowman with a cereal habit

  • At first I thought it was just my imagination then I saw it again and it was Tux the penguin! I wonder why they put him in the Fruit loops commercial? I guess they could not find another penguin so they decided to use Tux. That's just odd.

  • yeah i found tux on it the first time i saw it

  • well why the hell should he share his cereal. this commercial is akin to some guy you've never met breaking into your house taking food out of your refrigerator and running away.

  • obvious tux is obvious

  • I just saw the commercial and googled "fruit loop tux" and it took me here. I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw it right away.

  • That's starting to weird me out. Where i live there was a red hat convention or something. I never tried linux before because i prefer windows. I heard that you have to be really good at coding to enjoy linux.

  • @Tobymanic That's totally misinformation. If you're interested in using a Linux-based operating system, try Googling for Ubuntu - it's one of the most user-friendly OS out there.

  • Just saw this commercial, rushed to youtube to verify.

Seriously. Wtf?! I mean, that's awesome and all, but wtf?!

  • i just saa this commercial 15 min ago and i couldt believe my eyes that tux was there lol

  • This is probably the best Froot Loops commercial.

"Stay away from my delicious Froot Loops! Or I'll... I'LL...."

    *Froot Loops are gone*

    "oh that's cold..." :\

    lol

  • Alright, idk if this is subliminal or not, but check out the Yeti, his hair kind of resembles the Mac "Flurry" screen saver, and aslo check out the auroras in the commercial, kind of like the Default Mac wallpaper... I just saw this commercial yesterday, its pretty cool seeing Tux in the commercial.

  • Yeah I just saw this a second ago and thought I was tripping.

  • Yup, that was tux, tux spends his days breaking into noobs houses and sawing their balls off with a high-powered chainsaw.

  • So I wasn't the only one that noticed linux is everywhere.

  • we should investigate it .

what are doing those tucans in the South Pole and why a penguin toy it's consideate a 'secret weapon'.

    ...nevermind, time for cereals !

  • LOL I tweeted about my tux shirt today to work and someone told me about this commercial (I don't watch tv) Thanks for sharing. THAT IS TUX!!!

  • Really funny when I saw them squeezing Tux the penguin.....

  • :D

  • off topic, but... i can't stand miranda cosgrove (icarly) :)

  • Tux!!

  • @livinglegend1187 theres a difference between an anime style penguin like and tux. If u look up a picture of tux he looks EXACTLY the same

  • They're going to make Fruitbuntu distro running on a kernel compiled with fruit-roll loops optimization flags

  • @asfaqqq Funny!

  • Super funny...nice catch of Tux on TV (wats dat?) and all the geeks just start arguing and conspiracy theorizing instead of simply saying, "cool." Woulda been happier here if I saw the daemon or glenda but all the best anyway ^_^

  • Maybe they did that squeeze effect with some simple transforms/tweens, and that's the first image they found on Google that they liked, so they stole it (also likely to be available in SVG, making it even better to steal for the purpose)

  • @livinglegend1187 The problem is that trademark law isn't as agile as copyright. It's harder to give away the right to use an image without losing all trademark interest in it.

  • all hale the king! tux

  • Does this mean Fruit Loops will now be free?! OH LAWD YES!

  • I knew it wouldn't take long for this to be on youtube. I was excited when I caught Tux in this commercial. It is actually quite interesting though. There must be something significant of this; maybe the animators that made the commercial use Linux. This leaves me with many questions.

  • Im glad im not the only one to catch this i have seen this commercial too many times and was like "wait is that tux the penguin?"

  • I smell a fruity lawsuit coming on! And I hope they win, big corporations shouldn't be able to get away with this crap! Yes, Linux is open source (GPL and other open source friendly licenses), the name and logo/mascot, as far as I know, are not.

  • @mooky1977

    @Psythik

It's impossible for image to be open source - there is no source in image!

Tux is public domain, no restrictions on using him.

    Linux name is trademarked.

There will be no lawsuit, as that goes against what linux wants to achieve.

  • @pubby8 I don't think that is exactly correct. If a commercial used the Apple logo or the Microsoft logo in their commercial without permission, that is against copyright laws. Linux may be open-source, but it's still a company and Tux is still owned by them.

  • They probably rendered that commercial with linux machines.

  • @badassredskin And the graphic guys allowed themselves for a linux propaganda. To the roots.

  • There is a Linux OS called fruityloops

  • The company that made the ad could have used blender or something, maybe they were paying homage to the OS they crunch numbers on.

  • @Psythik The logo being licensed under a permissive license and the logo being in the public domain are two different things. In short, anyone can use Larry Ewing's Tux for any purpose provided Larry Ewing is acknowledged as the creator, which in this case, he is not. This is a breach of copyright.

  • @Psythik

Only the software is open source.

Tux, the logo, the mascot of the linux kernel is in no way open source.

  • @ApexAurajin Actually most of the variations of the "tux" mascot have an open-source licence on them or a not so official "if you use this please credit me." I couldn't find the licence for this particular one though.

  • @ApexAurajin

I think it might be open source.

  • @ApexAurajin From the original Tux web page:

Feel free to do whatever you see fit with the images, you are encouraged to integrate them into other designs that fit your need.

    ...

Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted provided you acknowledge me lewing@isc.tamu.edu and The GIMP if someone asks.

So it's not GPL, but Kellogs is probably fine. I would imagine Larry Ewing would be amused by the tribute, which is what it clearly is. Hey, free advertising for Linux. Thanks Kellogs!

  • @ApexAurajin It's CC Share-Share-a-like so close enough.

  • @ApexAurajin ... are you sure Tux is not open source? Cause I'm pretty sure it is! You can download the original Tux source image liked by Linus home page (bit.ly /7ZP6An). Not only that, but also SVG files are provided. SVG is source code, so this is literally open source. And if it wasn't open, we wouldn't have seen the variations of Tux. :)

  • @ApexAurajin All versions of Linux have pictures of Tux.

Tux is part of freely distributed open source software.

    Tux is public domain.

  • @DracoAzule Tux is _not_ public domain. Tux is CC-BY-SA.

That requires redistribution, derivative works to be permitted on this video, and attribution to be placed on/in/with it.

As such, I see no reason to not start making derivatives (remixes etc) of this, and the original artist (whose name escapes me atm) should demand that the attribution clause be fulfilled.

To deny us the right to create derivative works, or not give credit to the original artist is copyright violation.

  • @TheGzeus The original creator of Tux is Linus Torvalds himself. Look it up.

  • @DracoAzule The concept, yes, but not this particular visual design.

You should look up a few things about copyright and licensing.

I goofed here, wrong license for this particular design (which is a basic attribution requirement), but I corrected on double-checking.

I would have removed this comment for that reason, but now you've replied.

I'll remove my ill-informed comment if you remove yours. Sounds fair to me.

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry, disregard my earlier comments. I misread something.

So they just need to put the original artist's email somewhere as a thank you or something.

    So yeah...

  • @ApexAurajin @ApexAurajin Yeah it is. Look at the license: wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Tux

  • @ApexAurajin tux is open source(there are svgs), but it's also a registered trade mark, there are no silly rules about it's display though, they probably just searched for vector penguins, removed the shading and rounded a model.

  • nice catch. "Secret Weapon"

  • I also saw Balto!

  • awesome

  • Thank you for uploading this. My suspicion is confirmed!

  • Yes, it's Tux. Not Tux-like, not almost-Tux. It's Tux.
