Mushrooms are counted as plants because they show up in the yard. The monicker 'plant' refers to nationality in this game, not species. It's like the Crypt Lord in Warcraft being a beetle when he's a member of the Spider Kingdom. The Democratic Republic of Shrooms prolly joined the Plant Kingdom after a war caused by some roses who went to see an opera they didn't like (thumbs up if you get the reference)
