Why not have a 22 mag which can kill 2 birds with one stone? I still have one hmr rifle but wouldn't try to punch anything but paper with it. Its a fun niche but completely unnecessary ultimately.
when playing around with different ammo, i have the same exact weapon except its right handed and a blued barrel not stainless, but i find that hornaday v-max does not only out perform all the rounds out there, but is one of the cheaper priced ones too that dont misfire. cheapest rounds ever bought were winchester .17 hmr's and every 5 rounds 1 would misfire. so i think that v-max is the best. just my opinion
CCI, Federal, Winchester, Remington and Hornady all loaded here at CCI in Lewiston, Idaho with a V-max bullet are identical, with the exception of tip color. Manufactured on the same equip, to the same ballistic specs, using the same components other than color of the tip of the bullets. Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.
Love your videos Jumbow, could you tell me what rings and scope base you chose? I just bought this very rifle on your recomendation! (it's even lefty too!) I'm considering one of the sweet 17 scopes
All of the 17HMR rounds are made by CCI-Speer for all other labels. The use the V-Max bullets with diffrent color tip, Green for remington, Red for Hornaday, etc.

you have helped me make my decision. they have this same exact model at my local shop for 399.00 and i have picked out my scope and bipod. i have hornady varmit express. but i will try the cci rounds. thanx
yah, i read the tnt ammo was not as accurate, but it has to be the most beautiful rimfire cartidge i ever saw. I heard it is rather explosive as well. I would still buy some if i had a .17hmr to try it out--even if it isn't as accurate it may still be useful.
@ntrudr800 I use TNT green a lead free bullet, the area I shoot squirrels is in a lead free zone. The TNT will shoot 1 to 1.5 MOA at 100yrs consistantly. I've shot the vmax and other loads with good sucess however. What I'm really waiting for is for Horady and/or CCI to release their lead free bullets for reloading. Then I will use my 17 Remington at about 2900 to 3000 fps fro the squirrels. Although I can load as high as 4350 fps in the 17 Remington it shoots well at lower fps.
@coyote10xx yeah i suppose that makes sense. What doesn't make sense is a lead free zone. I read that the lead from firearms does not pollute enough to affect anything outside... the green movement can sometimes be a scam to make more money. Ever notice the price of 'green' stuff? expensive! I believe in preserving stuff but when it comes to ammo I don't see the big deal. Did anyone ever get lead poisoning on the battlefield??? XD
is there different size 17 hmr bullets and if there is can you tell me what the biggest one is im wanting to get one for my birthday and i want a big round what type should i get
@HaloRising34 Halo, there several .17 rounds starting from the smallest the 17HR2 a rim fire, 17HMR a rim fire, 17 fireball a center fire, 17 mach IV a center fire, 17 Remington a center fire and other wildcat cartiiages. What you get depends on what your going to shoot, but most all 17's are for small game only. Squirrels, rabbits, fox maybe coyotes for the larger ones.
@coyote10xx so i take you prefer the tnt's. what is the difference of the TNT vs the V-Max on the squirrels? Are the TNT's even more 'explosive' ? :) Why do your prefer the TNT's? thanks. I have been looking at the .223 & .30-06 but I may get a .17hmr sooner than planned :) These Savage 93R17's are nice with their BB, free float, accu-trigger, and bolt action :)
Jim, I found your videos when searching for reviews on Savage 93R17 FVSS rifles. I appreciate the time you took to create the video--it was very helpful!
hi, does it matter if i hold a rifle so i am looking down the scope with my right eye when using certian rifles, and is this one of those rifles, thanks kyle.
@stratcat70 Well you are certainly welcome. I have produced another video concerning 17 HMR bullet impact tests. I invite you to watch that one as well. Thanks for the review and comments :)
@Swiftsniper002 Being a stainless steel barrel, this would be hard for me to estimate. As a matter of fact, I have not really kept track of the amount of ammo that I have fired through this piece. I am guessing 300 rounds. I would speculate that 1000 rounds would complete the break in task.
During cleaning, I use a .177 caliber Hoppe's Bore Snake. I will remove the bolt, then insert the tip of the bore snake down through the chamber and out the barrel end. I use Hoppe's #9 bore solvent.
@MrJumBow In some of your older posts you mention extractor problems with the Sav93 17 I have that problem occasionally. What did you do to correct it? Jim
@Swiftsniper002 I find this rifle to be extremely accurate. Only during HIGH WINDS do these type of bullets tend not to group so well. Thanks for the review and comments :)
@VeryGunhappy Well I ordered this rifle in through one of our local FFL dealers. I bought it last summer (August 2009) and I paid exactly $420.00 American dollars for it. Thanks for the comments and review :)
@BearDog477 The old standby .22 magnum rimfire is a real fine cartridge. Since the bullet weight of the .22 is much greater compared to the .17 HMR, this can be a real advantage at times :)
@xle5363 This Savage model 93 has the factory "Accu-trigger". I have never found the need to adjust it from factory default settings nor to replace it. I am shooting this trigger "right out of the box", so to speak. Thanks for the review :)
the max range can be around 200 yards. Although I have this gun and I was putting shots out at 350 yards two days ago, hitting dead on. scope on my gun is a Cabela's Pine Ridge 3-12x40. great gun and scope, I love using it up here in Bush Alaska
@hunterman907 Well certainly, shots of 350 yards CAN be made but NOT in high winds. This little 17 or 20 grain bullet will "drift" on a person under those kind of weather conditions. I have tested out this caliber using four different rifles. Personally, for my needs, 200 yards is about the maximum that I will shoot. If you are getting good results at 350 yards then you are a much better shooter compared to me >> ;-o)
@bigdaddyff As stated many times in the reply field, I have a SIMMONS "Master Series" Aetec scope on this particular .17 HMR. This scope has a 2.8 x 10 magnification factor with a 44mm objective lens. Really HIGH magnification scopes are not needed for the .17 HMR. I find that the maximum effect range of this rifle/caliber/cartridge is only 200 yards or so. There are plenty of makes and brand name scopes that will work well on this rifle. Thanks for the question :)
@bluesand22 With that particular rifle, I can usually keep most of my bullets within a 1" circle at 100 yards. This, of course, is in low winds. Thanks for the review :)
Hello there MrJumBow i recently got my savage idneticle to yours (rifle only) i was wondering what youd recomend for a scope and also if there was a safe way to smooth down the trigger guard( just for looks mostly)
Hi again MrJumBow, finally i got my firearm license, thanks new zealand police doing such slow job, took me nearly half year to wait, and i just got the savage btvs back, i am going to buy a muller 4.5-14x40 scope for it, but what size scope rings do i need to use? i dont have any idea, thanks alot.
@aklbruce What I am using are the BURRIS "Z" rings. If I were you, I would not get confused by all the jabber on the internet about this subject. You are liable to read most anything. This is just a matter of purchasing most ANY two piece "Weaver Style" bases along with 1" tube rings. For that scope, you only need medium high bases. Check places like Cabelas, Midway USA, One Click Shooting, etc.,. If you watch my video real close like, you will see my setup BEFORE I installed the scope :)
@reptilesgamers These .17 HMR's can be rather picky about the ammo that you use from rifle to rifle. After extensive test firing, I personally find that the CCI V-MAX 17 grain rounds work the very best for me. They cost around 13 to 14 dollars per 50 rounds. I hope that this helps some :)
@13megaprime I see quite a few videos here on YouTube that severely lack subject information. Thanks for the review and compliments. However, I do realize that my videos can get rather boring :)
@Dilliboy63 Well to be quite honest, it is far more fancy that I prefer. I have a tendency to bump my rifles around so I must be careful with this one :)
I understand that the heavy barrel is a little quieter than the conventional, but does anyone know, is it possible to have it threaded to have a sound moderator fitted?
@Skidms9 To date, I have owned exactly 4 .17HMR's. Twos Savages, a Remington 597 (no longer in production) and a single shot H&R. The bull barrel is mostly for accuracy and does very little for sound muffling. However, I do believe that some type of silencer can be retro fitted to the end of any non sighted barrel. I would do some internet research on this matter. To be honest, I would not even worry about this. The 17HMR is not all that loud to begin with. Hope this helps some :)
@MrJumBow Thanks for your reply. The silencer question is really one of the last issue's I had to cover before making my mind up about buying this rifle. Coming from shooting solely .22 rim, there was always the issue of HV rounds being very noisy and requiring a silencer. However, if the .17's not that loud then that's the decision made for me. Thanks again, thanks for postng this video and happy shooting.
is the accu trigger really that nice? what exactly does it do? i watched the video on the savage website but im still a little confised, im buying a savage 17 hmr this summer but i just wanna get teh details figured out first
@oldtestement What that accu trigger allows the shooter to do is to adjust the amount of trigger pressure that is need for a good gentle squeeze thus increasing target accuracy. You can do this by a set screw that is located behind the trigger mechanism without disassembling the entire firearm. To be real honest, I just left mine at the default factory setting because the trigger pull was correct for me. I do believe that this is a handy feature. Thanks for the review :)
@ricobigo11 I agree. The Savage .17HMR is a nicely done rifle. However, the very first generation of these rifles had a few problems with the extractor and the firing pins. Thanks for the review :)
Oh Man, Great vid, I think I better get another rifle. I have the Mark II BTVS (Left Hand) and I think I need to give these little 17hmr a try.
I am a Savage fan now and I also have the Savage 10FP in .223 on the short list. Going to have to sneak it in through the Basement door when my wife is not watching. :)
Back in 2004, I purchased a "first generation" model 93 Savage .17 HMR. I had quite a few problems with that rifle (extraction and firing pin issues), but I finally got all those worked out. I watched what Savage was doing (very closely) and when they started producing the "accu-trigger" and in a left handed model, I knew that they had refined their act. Savage, as you may know, is making several models in the .17 HMR. Thanks for the review. Tell your wife that you MUST have one :)
Very good question. I will have to do some research on this one. About all I can really say, is that I am LEFT HANDED with a rife and Savage is one of few companies that is producing rifles for us southpaws. Thanks for the review :)
Man the day that ANY company "pays" me for endorsements or shout outs, is that day I will think that a miracle happened (lol) Thanks so much for the review :)
Well to be honest, during the recording of this very video, I was working out with some CCI TNT rounds. For some reason (unknown to me), I just could not get them to group as well as the 17 grain V-Max rounds. Thanks for the review :)
i have both the .17hmr and the .22wmr and i love them both my .17hmr is just a lil' bit more accurate but i can put 5 shot on about the size of the quarter
Nice vid Jumbow. Now I don't know why you want to give your computer credit at the end of your video, heck you did all the work. But if you're gonna do that you best get the grammar correct. "compiled on AN apple computer" not "compiled on A apple computer"
Now that's being picky ain't it? Lol - go git some varmints Jumbow!
Thanks for the review. Yes, some of the stuff I do with my videos is kind of stupid, I will admit. About a month ago, I finally got around to making a personal logo to stick at the end or beginning of my .MV4 files. None of this is necessary, just something to bore folks with (lol)
GT, a few years back, I had one of the first generation model 93 Savage's configured in the .17 HMR. I had nothing but PROBLEMS with that particular rifle. Not with accuracy, but rather with firing pin and extraction issues. Finally, I got ALL those bugs worked out then I sold that rifle to one of my Son-in-Laws (lol) :)
GT, unfortunately, my Son-in-Law has NOT paid me for that Savage yet. I guess he figures I will get old and die then he does not have to worry about the debt anymore (lol) I am just joking, of course :)
I also found that I love hunting grouse with these 17's. Pok'm in the head no meat damage. I have done this thing for many years with a 22. Although 2 out of 5 that chicken can move his head right out of the way when its looking right at ya. The 17 has so much more velocity, him has a wee bit more trouble dodging ... lol
I love grouse and eggs for breakfast.
By the way I love the left hand bolt and stock to boot.
Well to be real honest, I have only shot varmints with any of my .17HMR's. I am quite certain that grouse would make worthy game for this caliber as well. Thanks for the comments :)
The truth of the matter here, is that it was one of my Son-in-Laws that introduced me to the .17HMR. I also own a standard .22 caliber side arm (a semi-automatic pistol) that I can get off 10 rounds in 3 seconds. It is a Neos Enos Beretta with a 6" pipe. Of course, using the "spray and pray" method of shooting is a very INACCURATE way of shooting a pistol of this type (lol)
It sure is FUN to read where you guys are enjoying the .17HMR. The farthest shot that I have made on a golpher is 160 yards. None-the-less, I KNOW that this particular caliber has limitations of around 200 yards. I try to stay in the 100 yard range if possible. My best advice is for you to practice as much as possible and try different bullet weights and brands. I find that the CCI 17 grain V-Max rounds work the best through my Savage. Hope this helps :)
I do believe that I have messed around with most ammo available for the .17HMR. And YES, you are very correct about those hollow points. I, very much, favor the 17 grain CCI V-Max rounds but I am seeing fairly good groups with the 17 grain CCI hollow point TNT's. To date, I have owned 4 of these .17HMR rifles, but either sold the other three or gave them to various family members. Thanks for the kind comments. This was appreciated.
Thanks for the question. On this particular rifle the answer is NO. This Savage model 93 is configured for the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire cartridge only.
I get quite a few comments concerning the .22 WMR vs the .17 HMR. To be honest, I like both calibers. However, I find the .17 HMR to be a wee more accurate compared to the .22 WMR. None-the-less, the .22 WMR does fire a heavier bullet so the rimfire enthusiast must take all of these factors into consideration. It also might be noted that the .17 HMR has a muzzle velocity which is much faster compared to the .22 WMR :)
I appreciate the kind comments. I really do. I seen the time, while raising my children, that I was so broke that I could not even buy bullets for a .22 let alone own rifles like I have now. Ohhh well, that is life for ya I guess (lol)
If you watch that video real close like, towards the end of the movie I have a still frame picture of a local vendor by the name of Yellowstone Gateway Sports located right here in Livingston, Montana. ANY good, friendly FFL agent/vendor should be able to order you one in. It took one whole month for me to take receipt of this particular firearm. Savage is one of the few companies producing rifles like this .17 HMR for southpaws :)
QUICK, grab that rifle..!! Those particular Savages are in high demand and CAN be kind of hard to get a hold of. Good luck to you..!! This is truly a nice rifle :)
I appreciate your kind comments. I wished all were that good. Unfortunately for me, I get my fair share of hate and spam replies concerning some of my videos. Ohh well, that's the internet for you :-o)
Great video, and hello from Texas. How's your rifle holding up? I'm getting my 9 year old daughter either this rifle or a 10/22 w/ a match bbl for her B-Day. She wants to learn to shoot like daddy. I'm kind of torn between the two though.
I have had ZERO problems with my Savage model 93 BTVLSS. However, I have only ran about 500 rounds through it, but no problems so far. It has been my experiences with the .17 HMR, that problems will surface with the rifle coming right out of the box. I used to have a first generation Savage .17 HMR which cause me a bunch of firing pin and extractor problems. I finally got those all worked out and then ended up giving that rifle to one of my son-in-laws :)
Well, to be really honest, it is my humble opinion that the .17 HMR is much more deadly and accurate compared to the standard .22 caliber. HOWEVER, a .22 is a good choice for a young daughter. The cost of the rounds for the .17 HMR are much more expensive compared to the .22. As you know, the .22 has been around for MANY years and there are very good rifle choices out there in this configuration :)
Cost is the only thing holding me up, practice makes perfect and 22 lr is as cheap as it gets. I've been eyeballing a 10/22 w/ a heavy barrel which are super accurate rifles. She's been training on a high power air rifle for a about 2 years now and she loves to shoot. It's time for a real rifle.
Believe this or not, but I own a German made RWS pellet rifle in the .22 caliber configuration. I have bowled over alot of golfers with that piece. I am sure you are talking about the RUGER 10/22. I bought one of those years ago for my son but we washed the barrel out due to massive shooting. That particular rifle has been around for many, many years and it has proven itself to be a top notch .22 caliber rimfire. At any rate, good luck with whatever choice you make :)
go for a variable zoom. plus i wouldn't thing you would be shooting more than 100 yards so a 4x10x40 is a good all around variable zoom scope. i got the redhead 3.5x10x40 for my marlin 795SS and due to the cold i was hitting 9/10 shoots in a silver dollar size pattern with a better rest and warmer weather (couldn't feel my fingers it was so cold the other day lol) i should be able to make a much smaller pattern..just my opinion
Your post here was well received. I agree with you. I elected to go with a LOWER magnification scope considering that the maximum range on the .17 is only 200 yard approximately. I can usually stay on a 1" Shoot and C target dot shot at 100 yards in low winds and warm temperatures. Lots of choices out there, but I went with a Simmons Master Series AETEC scope with a zoom factor of 2.8x10x. 44mm objective lens.
I am sorry but this post function does not work for me at times here on YouTube. There are lots of scope selections for the .17HMR, no doubt. Personally, I would select a scope with good light gathering ability and LOWER magnification. My Simmons has a zoom factor of 2.8x10 magnification using a 44mm objective lens. You can get fairly good deals at: w w w one click shooting (dot) com :)
Just as a side note, please refer to my video named > 17HMR and 450 Marlin Amendments. I manged to capture a few more pictures of my Simmons AETEC scope in that particular video production. The selection of a good 17HMR scope can be quite challenging, no doubt. Good light gathering ability and LOWER magnification are factors that I would give high consideration. Hope this advice helps :)
It''s a beautiflu rifle!!! I bought the same one in 22WMR! I just preferred the heavier bullet, already have a gun cleaning kit for .22 and liked the fact that there is more variety in ammo where I am!
Kuffs, I really do appreciate the intelligent feed back. I have another video out called "17HRM and 450 Marlin Amendments" where I address issues concerning the .17HMR vs the .22 magnum. To be really honest, I will have to admit that the heavier bullet weight in the .22WMR has a great deal of merit. I like the deadly accuracy of the .17HRM, however both of these rimfires are great cartridges :)
really nice video, really nice gun, last week i went to the gundealer to see this gun, first time i saw it i fell in love with it, but the sad thing is my license is still processing, and they only got one left in store....
Yes I very much understand your situation. I had to wait ONE MONTH for me to receive this particular model 93 Savage that I own. I am left handed (south paw) and those configurations are even harder to come by. I had a local vendor by the name of Yellowstone Gateway Sports order that rifle in and it cost me $420.00.
very nice video (thank you) , i am currently trying to decide on that very rifle "or" the cz 452 thumbhole varmint , but not sure if it has the set trigger or not allthough i do know its adjustable as the cz web site states , or possibly the cz 453 varmint which does have the set trigger ...decisions decisions LOL , thanks again
Well as far as I am aware, those CZ rifles are pretty good ones. I really cannot say for sure because I have never owned one. However, the Savage model 93 here does have that adjustable Accu-trigger. I just left it at factory settings because the trigger pull felt good to me. Hope this helps some :)
I appreciate the kind comments about this particular rifle and caliber. Some of the comments I receive have NOT been all that favorable. Oh well, that's the internet for ya (lol)
Yes, with a well placed shot at UNDER 200 yards, this particular caliber will work just fine for coyotes. There is quite a bit of controversy on the internet concerning this very issue, but I pay attention to none of it. This particular .17 H.M.R. that I have now is deadly accurate and this is the fourth one (same caliber different rifles) that I have owned and messed around with. Hope this helps.
Hello Zis. Thanks for the post. Whenever I bought this particular rifle, it cost me $420.00. Since I am left handed, I had to have it special ordered in by a local FFL dealer. I hope your wish comes true. This is a VERY accurate rifle and caliber :)
I am having some problems posting here. The scope is a Simmons Master Series Aetec 2.8x-10x power magnification with a 44mm objective lens. The bipod is a HARRIS brand with swivel mount and click leg stops from 9 inches to 13 inches. I have another AMENDMENT video out on both the .17 HMR and the .450 Marlin which explains things a wee bit better. Please watch this video, it should answer most questions you have :)
Okay, basically speaking, at 100 yards with your scope set at 3x MAGNIFICATION, the image you are looking at is 3 times larger than normal eye vision. At 9x MAGNIFICATION, that same image (or target) will appear to be NINE times larger in view. However the larger number of magnification will decrease your "field of view". For LONG shots, use the higher numbers. For close or brush shooting, use the lower numbers. Write back if you have more questions:)
Having a wee bit of problems posting here. 3x MAGNIFICATION simply means that "objects" or "targets" appear three times LARGER than with normal human vision. 10x magnification will show objects or targets TEN TIMES larger compared to normal vision. Use LOWER numbers for CLOSE shooting and use the higher magnification numbers for LONG SHOTS. As a rule of thumb, I just run most of my hunting scopes at six (6) power and never mess with that mag ring much :)
Nice video, but i have a question since you seem like the type of guy that knows. How far is the 308 accurate before it starts to drop off? I want to buy the savage bvss in 308 for 600-1000 yard metal shooting. Would you recommend this?
Thanks for writing. In all reality, the NATO .308 round is VERY accurate with the right bullets, loads and rifle. This cartridge has been used as a SNIPER round by various armed forces for a good many years. HOWEVER, for really long range shooting, I would recommend something a wee bit more powerful like the 7mm mag or the 300 Win Mag. None-the-less, the .308 is a GOOD one :)
u know alot about gun... can you tel me something about my scope... it's a 3-9 x 40 tasco scope... why am i asking you this, will because i just don't know what the number adjustment is for... i know it's for close up... but beside that i just dont know... i just dont know the distance between the number and when to use it.. PLEASE HELP... THANKS...
I am not quite sure of the question here. If you are talking about the MAGNIFICATION zoom numbers, well you need to set the scope on the SMALLEST number (3x) for close shots and the LARGEST number (9x) for longer shots. If you are meaning the sight in TURRETS on the side of the scope, ONE click (either up or down) will move your bullet impact one quarter of an inch at 100 yards. Turrerts are the knobs in the middle of the scope, either at the top or on one side. Hope this helps :)
Personally, I would NOT recommend the .17HMR for a deer rifle. I am quite sure, under the right conditions and being close enough, a person just might be able to harvest a deer with this rifle. However, since these bullets are so very small in grain weight, I am saying NEGATIVE to it being a "good" deer rifle. Here in Montana, I use a .270 Win for deer hunting and such. I only use my .17 HMR for varmints :)
One question what is the model of the scope you have there? and do you know of anyweb sites i could get it from if so could you send me the link. thanks! oh and you own my favorite firearm ever!!
ML, thanks for writing. I am having troubles posting here. I have a Simmons Master Series 2.8 x 10 power scope with a 44mm objective lens. I bought the scope, the Harris bi-pod and the rings and this URL. w w w o n e c l i c k s h o o t i n g com. There are a ton of online vendors selling this scope. Good shooting and be safe :)
I build and rebuild rifles. I just finished an older mod 93 a guy had abused. Fellas a good thumbhole stock can be had cheap by going to Boyds Stocks on the web and typing Savage a few blank spaces and 93. A few pages of factory second stocks will be diaplayed that're great stocks but just have minor blemishes in the woodwork or stain. Boyds makes all the stocks for Savage. They charge about$160 for a lam. thole.A 2nd thole goes for about $70 on their site if you know where to look Good Job MrBOW
You are VERY CORRECT in all that you posted here. I had a first generation Savage .17 H.M.R. but experienced alot of firing pin and ejection problems. Finally I got them all worked out and ended up GIVING that rifle to one of my Son-in-Laws. Then I turned around and bought this factory jobber that you seen in the video. It has proven out to be a good firearm :)
This guy does a great job reviewing the round and the rifle. I get tired of the snotty lil punks that get on here and put out unsafe gun practices and reveal they know nothing about what they are talking about. Their lil punk buddies get upset and send me emails crying because i make them look like fools in front of their girlfriends but hey. GIRLS...you want a MAN not a boy to go through life with. These lil crybabies can't feed and support you. All HMR rds come from the same plant in Idaho.
PV, believe me, if I had my way, I do not think I would have created this .17 H.M.R. video. I have endured ALOT of negative comments. All I was trying to do, basically, is to brag up that little .17 H.M.R. for varmint hunting and for accuracy. And YES, I have also read that the .17 H.M.R. rounds come out of the same plant. After much experimentation, I find that the CCI 17 grain V-Max rounds work the best for me. Thanks for the comments :)
I guess you mean that you have a Savage model 93 BTVLSS. If that be the case, then you are in fat city..!! I find this rifle to be a real good varminter. Good luck with yours :)
@MrJumBow hay i was wandering what is the most accurate ammo for this gun i got hornady v-maxx and federal i herd that the Remington has a boat-tail out there and wandering if you have tried this? thanks.
I have tried the Remington 17 grain Accu-tip rounds and I like them. However, I have messed around with almost every 17 H.M.R. round ever made and I exclusively prefer the 17 grain CCI V-MAX bullets for the .17 H.M.R. In my day, I have owned exactly 3 different .17's and my Savage Model 93 BTVLSS is the best of them all. The ONLY bullets I fire through this rifle are the 17 grain CCI V-MAX's. I hope this helps some :)
Well the reality is, the .22 magnum is NOT a very accurate round to begin with. Personally, I prefer the .17 H.M.R. over ALL other rimfire rounds. However those small, light wight 17 grain bullets WILL drift in high winds. I have tested this round extensively out of 4 different rifles.
Well, the amount of "cleaning" that I do to my Savage .17 H.M.R. just depends upon how many bullets I push through the tube (i.e. barrel) On ANY of my rifles, I DO NOT clean them excessively. I would say that I clean my 17 real good about every 100 rounds or so. Too much "cleaning" will wash out the twist in your barrel.
Hi what did you set your zero at. I have the savage .17 mako with a old 4x weaver. I zeroed it at 50yds and havent shot it much. gr8 for rabbits though.
what tipe of scope is that

H, I kike your videos.
Obviously the shellcase 'head stamp' and packaging would be different on the various products.

winstongotte 1 year ago
yah, i read the tnt ammo was not as accurate, but it has to be the most beautiful rimfire cartidge i ever saw. I heard it is rather explosive as well. I would still buy some if i had a .17hmr to try it out--even if it isn't as accurate it may still be useful.
ntrudr800 1 year ago
@ntrudr800 I use TNT green a lead free bullet, the area I shoot squirrels is in a lead free zone. The TNT will shoot 1 to 1.5 MOA at 100yrs consistantly. I've shot the vmax and other loads with good sucess however. What I'm really waiting for is for Horady and/or CCI to release their lead free bullets for reloading. Then I will use my 17 Remington at about 2900 to 3000 fps fro the squirrels. Although I can load as high as 4350 fps in the 17 Remington it shoots well at lower fps.
coyote10xx 1 year ago
@coyote10xx yeah i suppose that makes sense. What doesn't make sense is a lead free zone. I read that the lead from firearms does not pollute enough to affect anything outside... the green movement can sometimes be a scam to make more money. Ever notice the price of 'green' stuff? expensive! I believe in preserving stuff but when it comes to ammo I don't see the big deal. Did anyone ever get lead poisoning on the battlefield??? XD

is there different size 17 hmr bullets and if there is can you tell me what the biggest one is im wanting to get one for my birthday and i want a big round what type should i get
HaloRising34 1 year ago
@HaloRising34 Halo, there several .17 rounds starting from the smallest the 17HR2 a rim fire, 17HMR a rim fire, 17 fireball a center fire, 17 mach IV a center fire, 17 Remington a center fire and other wildcat cartiiages. What you get depends on what your going to shoot, but most all 17's are for small game only. Squirrels, rabbits, fox maybe coyotes for the larger ones.

coyote10xx 1 year ago
@coyote10xx so i take you prefer the tnt's. what is the difference of the TNT vs the V-Max on the squirrels? Are the TNT's even more 'explosive' ? :) Why do your prefer the TNT's? thanks. I have been looking at the .223 & .30-06 but I may get a .17hmr sooner than planned :) These Savage 93R17's are nice with their BB, free float, accu-trigger, and bolt action :)

How many shots did it take to break in the barrel. Do you have issues with cleaning?
Swiftsniper002 1 year ago
@Swiftsniper002 Being a stainless steel barrel, this would be hard for me to estimate. As a matter of fact, I have not really kept track of the amount of ammo that I have fired through this piece. I am guessing 300 rounds. I would speculate that 1000 rounds would complete the break in task.
During cleaning, I use a .177 caliber Hoppe's Bore Snake. I will remove the bolt, then insert the tip of the bore snake down through the chamber and out the barrel end. I use Hoppe's #9 bore solvent.

BearDog477 1 year ago
@BearDog477 The old standby .22 magnum rimfire is a real fine cartridge. Since the bullet weight of the .22 is much greater compared to the .17 HMR, this can be a real advantage at times :)

@xle5363 This Savage model 93 has the factory "Accu-trigger". I have never found the need to adjust it from factory default settings nor to replace it. I am shooting this trigger "right out of the box", so to speak. Thanks for the review :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
the max range can be around 200 yards. Although I have this gun and I was putting shots out at 350 yards two days ago, hitting dead on. scope on my gun is a Cabela's Pine Ridge 3-12x40. great gun and scope, I love using it up here in Bush Alaska
hunterman907 1 year ago
@hunterman907 Well certainly, shots of 350 yards CAN be made but NOT in high winds. This little 17 or 20 grain bullet will "drift" on a person under those kind of weather conditions. I have tested out this caliber using four different rifles. Personally, for my needs, 200 yards is about the maximum that I will shoot. If you are getting good results at 350 yards then you are a much better shooter compared to me >> ;-o)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
Great Vid. What is the brand of scope you are using, magnification etc,
My gun will be here is 3 days- need your input.
bigdaddyff 1 year ago
@bigdaddyff As stated many times in the reply field, I have a SIMMONS "Master Series" Aetec scope on this particular .17 HMR. This scope has a 2.8 x 10 magnification factor with a 44mm objective lens. Really HIGH magnification scopes are not needed for the .17 HMR. I find that the maximum effect range of this rifle/caliber/cartridge is only 200 yards or so. There are plenty of makes and brand name scopes that will work well on this rifle. Thanks for the question :)

aklbruce 1 year ago
@aklbruce What I am using are the BURRIS "Z" rings. If I were you, I would not get confused by all the jabber on the internet about this subject. You are liable to read most anything. This is just a matter of purchasing most ANY two piece "Weaver Style" bases along with 1" tube rings. For that scope, you only need medium high bases. Check places like Cabelas, Midway USA, One Click Shooting, etc.,. If you watch my video real close like, you will see my setup BEFORE I installed the scope :)

What is the best ammo?
For target and varment and price.
reptilesgamers 1 year ago
@reptilesgamers These .17 HMR's can be rather picky about the ammo that you use from rifle to rifle. After extensive test firing, I personally find that the CCI V-MAX 17 grain rounds work the very best for me. They cost around 13 to 14 dollars per 50 rounds. I hope that this helps some :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
@MrJumBow Yes that does help, but how does that do to varment? Compared to the varment grenade rounds.

I understand that the heavy barrel is a little quieter than the conventional, but does anyone know, is it possible to have it threaded to have a sound moderator fitted?
Skidms9 1 year ago
@Skidms9 To date, I have owned exactly 4 .17HMR's. Twos Savages, a Remington 597 (no longer in production) and a single shot H&R. The bull barrel is mostly for accuracy and does very little for sound muffling. However, I do believe that some type of silencer can be retro fitted to the end of any non sighted barrel. I would do some internet research on this matter. To be honest, I would not even worry about this. The 17HMR is not all that loud to begin with. Hope this helps some :)
MrJumBow 1 year ago
@MrJumBow Thanks for your reply. The silencer question is really one of the last issue's I had to cover before making my mind up about buying this rifle. Coming from shooting solely .22 rim, there was always the issue of HV rounds being very noisy and requiring a silencer. However, if the .17's not that loud then that's the decision made for me. Thanks again, thanks for postng this video and happy shooting.
Skidms9 1 year ago
is the accu trigger really that nice? what exactly does it do? i watched the video on the savage website but im still a little confised, im buying a savage 17 hmr this summer but i just wanna get teh details figured out first
oldtestement 1 year ago
@oldtestement What that accu trigger allows the shooter to do is to adjust the amount of trigger pressure that is need for a good gentle squeeze thus increasing target accuracy. You can do this by a set screw that is located behind the trigger mechanism without disassembling the entire firearm. To be real honest, I just left mine at the default factory setting because the trigger pull was correct for me. I do believe that this is a handy feature. Thanks for the review :)

hifly78 2 years ago
Back in 2004, I purchased a "first generation" model 93 Savage .17 HMR. I had quite a few problems with that rifle (extraction and firing pin issues), but I finally got all those worked out. I watched what Savage was doing (very closely) and when they started producing the "accu-trigger" and in a left handed model, I knew that they had refined their act. Savage, as you may know, is making several models in the .17 HMR. Thanks for the review. Tell your wife that you MUST have one :)

BourbonWhiskies 2 years ago
Well to be real honest, I have only shot varmints with any of my .17HMR's. I am quite certain that grouse would make worthy game for this caliber as well. Thanks for the comments :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
The truth of the matter here, is that it was one of my Son-in-Laws that introduced me to the .17HMR. I also own a standard .22 caliber side arm (a semi-automatic pistol) that I can get off 10 rounds in 3 seconds. It is a Neos Enos Beretta with a 6" pipe. Of course, using the "spray and pray" method of shooting is a very INACCURATE way of shooting a pistol of this type (lol)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
It sure is FUN to read where you guys are enjoying the .17HMR. The farthest shot that I have made on a golpher is 160 yards. None-the-less, I KNOW that this particular caliber has limitations of around 200 yards. I try to stay in the 100 yard range if possible. My best advice is for you to practice as much as possible and try different bullet weights and brands. I find that the CCI 17 grain V-Max rounds work the best through my Savage. Hope this helps :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
love these 17's. I have three. I even like my single shot sportster.
I was able to stand 75 yards back and punch a hole through a peice of 1/4 inch steel.. Just like a drill bit.
Who wouldnt like shooting a 22 mag necked down to a 17.. Thats the same as a 177 cal. pellet or bb.
The hallow points sound pretty cool when ya get a good gut shot on a big fat ground squirrel. PLOP!! lol
BourbonWhiskies 2 years ago
I do believe that I have messed around with most ammo available for the .17HMR. And YES, you are very correct about those hollow points. I, very much, favor the 17 grain CCI V-Max rounds but I am seeing fairly good groups with the 17 grain CCI hollow point TNT's. To date, I have owned 4 of these .17HMR rifles, but either sold the other three or gave them to various family members. Thanks for the kind comments. This was appreciated.

StAgMaStA1 2 years ago
I get quite a few comments concerning the .22 WMR vs the .17 HMR. To be honest, I like both calibers. However, I find the .17 HMR to be a wee more accurate compared to the .22 WMR. None-the-less, the .22 WMR does fire a heavier bullet so the rimfire enthusiast must take all of these factors into consideration. It also might be noted that the .17 HMR has a muzzle velocity which is much faster compared to the .22 WMR :)

Great video, and hello from Texas. How's your rifle holding up? I'm getting my 9 year old daughter either this rifle or a 10/22 w/ a match bbl for her B-Day. She wants to learn to shoot like daddy. I'm kind of torn between the two though.
Springr1911 2 years ago
I have had ZERO problems with my Savage model 93 BTVLSS. However, I have only ran about 500 rounds through it, but no problems so far. It has been my experiences with the .17 HMR, that problems will surface with the rifle coming right out of the box. I used to have a first generation Savage .17 HMR which cause me a bunch of firing pin and extractor problems. I finally got those all worked out and then ended up giving that rifle to one of my son-in-laws :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
Well, to be really honest, it is my humble opinion that the .17 HMR is much more deadly and accurate compared to the standard .22 caliber. HOWEVER, a .22 is a good choice for a young daughter. The cost of the rounds for the .17 HMR are much more expensive compared to the .22. As you know, the .22 has been around for MANY years and there are very good rifle choices out there in this configuration :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
Cost is the only thing holding me up, practice makes perfect and 22 lr is as cheap as it gets. I've been eyeballing a 10/22 w/ a heavy barrel which are super accurate rifles. She's been training on a high power air rifle for a about 2 years now and she loves to shoot. It's time for a real rifle.
Springr1911 2 years ago
Believe this or not, but I own a German made RWS pellet rifle in the .22 caliber configuration. I have bowled over alot of golfers with that piece. I am sure you are talking about the RUGER 10/22. I bought one of those years ago for my son but we washed the barrel out due to massive shooting. That particular rifle has been around for many, many years and it has proven itself to be a top notch .22 caliber rimfire. At any rate, good luck with whatever choice you make :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
I jus bought the same rifle and im lookin for a scope any suggestions.
MrMcgregor53 2 years ago
go for a variable zoom. plus i wouldn't thing you would be shooting more than 100 yards so a 4x10x40 is a good all around variable zoom scope. i got the redhead 3.5x10x40 for my marlin 795SS and due to the cold i was hitting 9/10 shoots in a silver dollar size pattern with a better rest and warmer weather (couldn't feel my fingers it was so cold the other day lol) i should be able to make a much smaller pattern..just my opinion
FyreFox94 2 years ago
Your post here was well received. I agree with you. I elected to go with a LOWER magnification scope considering that the maximum range on the .17 is only 200 yard approximately. I can usually stay on a 1" Shoot and C target dot shot at 100 yards in low winds and warm temperatures. Lots of choices out there, but I went with a Simmons Master Series AETEC scope with a zoom factor of 2.8x10x. 44mm objective lens.
MrJumBow 2 years ago
I am sorry but this post function does not work for me at times here on YouTube. There are lots of scope selections for the .17HMR, no doubt. Personally, I would select a scope with good light gathering ability and LOWER magnification. My Simmons has a zoom factor of 2.8x10 magnification using a 44mm objective lens. You can get fairly good deals at: w w w one click shooting (dot) com :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
Just as a side note, please refer to my video named > 17HMR and 450 Marlin Amendments. I manged to capture a few more pictures of my Simmons AETEC scope in that particular video production. The selection of a good 17HMR scope can be quite challenging, no doubt. Good light gathering ability and LOWER magnification are factors that I would give high consideration. Hope this advice helps :)

It''s a beautiflu rifle!!! I bought the same one in 22WMR! I just preferred the heavier bullet, already have a gun cleaning kit for .22 and liked the fact that there is more variety in ammo where I am!
kuffs06 2 years ago
Kuffs, I really do appreciate the intelligent feed back. I have another video out called "17HRM and 450 Marlin Amendments" where I address issues concerning the .17HMR vs the .22 magnum. To be really honest, I will have to admit that the heavier bullet weight in the .22WMR has a great deal of merit. I like the deadly accuracy of the .17HRM, however both of these rimfires are great cartridges :)

klpbaron 2 years ago
Well as far as I am aware, those CZ rifles are pretty good ones. I really cannot say for sure because I have never owned one. However, the Savage model 93 here does have that adjustable Accu-trigger. I just left it at factory settings because the trigger pull felt good to me. Hope this helps some :)

I appreciate the kind comments about this particular rifle and caliber. Some of the comments I receive have NOT been all that favorable. Oh well, that's the internet for ya (lol)

Can this gun take down a coyote, and how far is it effective to kill
Rockfan2013 2 years ago
Yes, with a well placed shot at UNDER 200 yards, this particular caliber will work just fine for coyotes. There is quite a bit of controversy on the internet concerning this very issue, but I pay attention to none of it. This particular .17 H.M.R. that I have now is deadly accurate and this is the fourth one (same caliber different rifles) that I have owned and messed around with. Hope this helps.

I want one for Christmas
zls22 2 years ago
Hello Zis. Thanks for the post. Whenever I bought this particular rifle, it cost me $420.00. Since I am left handed, I had to have it special ordered in by a local FFL dealer. I hope your wish comes true. This is a VERY accurate rifle and caliber :)

thanks only one more day to find out!!!!!!
zls22 2 years ago
hey man sweet gun, i am ordering one. but i was wondering how much and what kind and alll the details u can give of ur scope and bipod.
bcameron2009 2 years ago
I am having some problems posting here. The scope is a Simmons Master Series Aetec 2.8x-10x power magnification with a 44mm objective lens. The bipod is a HARRIS brand with swivel mount and click leg stops from 9 inches to 13 inches. I have another AMENDMENT video out on both the .17 HMR and the .450 Marlin which explains things a wee bit better. Please watch this video, it should answer most questions you have :)

that help... so at 100 yard set the number to (3x) or what.... or should i set it at a big number... and from there on, how does the number work...
hunterman505 2 years ago
Okay, basically speaking, at 100 yards with your scope set at 3x MAGNIFICATION, the image you are looking at is 3 times larger than normal eye vision. At 9x MAGNIFICATION, that same image (or target) will appear to be NINE times larger in view. However the larger number of magnification will decrease your "field of view". For LONG shots, use the higher numbers. For close or brush shooting, use the lower numbers. Write back if you have more questions:)
MrJumBow 2 years ago

Would you recommend this?
rawimpact 2 years ago

THANKS...
hunterman505 2 years ago
I am not quite sure of the question here. If you are talking about the MAGNIFICATION zoom numbers, well you need to set the scope on the SMALLEST number (3x) for close shots and the LARGEST number (9x) for longer shots. If you are meaning the sight in TURRETS on the side of the scope, ONE click (either up or down) will move your bullet impact one quarter of an inch at 100 yards. Turrerts are the knobs in the middle of the scope, either at the top or on one side. Hope this helps :)

cn it kill a deer
dukeshazz 2 years ago
Personally, I would NOT recommend the .17HMR for a deer rifle. I am quite sure, under the right conditions and being close enough, a person just might be able to harvest a deer with this rifle. However, since these bullets are so very small in grain weight, I am saying NEGATIVE to it being a "good" deer rifle. Here in Montana, I use a .270 Win for deer hunting and such. I only use my .17 HMR for varmints :)

Please read the comments below. I cannot reply to this post for some reason. I have tried at least 4 or 5 times :)

All HMR rds come from the same plant in Idaho.
pvtdinky 2 years ago

Good luck with yours :)

whats the best rimfire for like 200 yd target shooting?
RockinMissZ 2 years ago
Like stated, I prefer the .17 H.M.R. the best out of ALL rimfire cartridges.
MrJumBow 2 years ago
@MrJumBow hay i was wandering what is the most accurate ammo for this gun i got hornady v-maxx and federal i herd that the Remington has a boat-tail out there and wandering if you have tried this? thanks.
ldragonheart 2 years ago
I have tried the Remington 17 grain Accu-tip rounds and I like them. However, I have messed around with almost every 17 H.M.R. round ever made and I exclusively prefer the 17 grain CCI V-MAX bullets for the .17 H.M.R. In my day, I have owned exactly 3 different .17's and my Savage Model 93 BTVLSS is the best of them all. The ONLY bullets I fire through this rifle are the 17 grain CCI V-MAX's. I hope this helps some :)
MrJumBow 2 years ago
the .17 hmr is the best of the rimfires when it comes to wind!
.22 wmr has bigger bullet so the wind has more to work with. and the bullet goes slower.
JokkeProductions 2 years ago
Well the reality is, the .22 magnum is NOT a very accurate round to begin with. Personally, I prefer the .17 H.M.R. over ALL other rimfire rounds. However those small, light wight 17 grain bullets WILL drift in high winds. I have tested this round extensively out of 4 different rifles.
MrJumBow 2 years ago
hey man how often do you clean you hmr?
peterkidd27 2 years ago
Well, the amount of "cleaning" that I do to my Savage .17 H.M.R. just depends upon how many bullets I push through the tube (i.e. barrel) On ANY of my rifles, I DO NOT clean them excessively. I would say that I clean my 17 real good about every 100 rounds or so. Too much "cleaning" will wash out the twist in your barrel.

Hi what did you set your zero at. I have the savage .17 mako with a old 4x weaver. I zeroed it at 50yds and havent shot it much. gr8 for rabbits though.
