Some people here are just too afraid of the absurd idea of Sarah Palin as president. However, from what I've heard from many people is that she is the nominee and the only hope for America. They worship her and would not vote or turn the "news" on at 5 o'clock without her. These are the same people who blame Obama for everything and say he is worse than Hitler. Specter is absolutely right. this all started during the stimulus debate. every economist in the country knows that a 787 billion stimulus package is not enough to stimulate a 13 TRILLION DOLLAR economy. obama really tried to bring bipartisanship to washington by watering down the legislation from a 1.4 trillion bill to a 787 billion package that included 400bilion dollars worth of tax cuts. by only getting i think 3 GOPers to vote for such legislation, it set the tone for future bills

CommonSenseJoe, if you don't see how both parties have dramatically inflated the size and power of government for their own agenda's, then there is no hope for you. Just look at a chart showing the debt for the past three decades, and count up how many years both parties have been in power.

The gov't deficit spending started in the 60's under LBJ - see C Romer work on shift in macroeconomic policy under liberals: "cause and consequence of a mistaken revolution." Much of the increase in national debt in the 80's was the cost of the liberal excesses of the 60's and 70's - the war in vietnam, the war on poverty, inflationary 70's, etc.

Tooltalk, three was a number I pulled out of my hat so it would cover multiple Democratic and Republican administrations. IMO, if one thinks the problem is rooted with just one party, then we'll never solve this problem. Both of them are fairly toxic at this point.

Some people here are just too afraid of the absurd idea of Sarah Palin as president. However, from what I've heard from many people is that she is the nominee and the only hope for America. They worship her and would not vote or turn the "news" on at 5 o'clock without her. These are the same people who blame Obama for everything and say he is worse than Hitler. There is a lot of people out there who believe this and that gives her power.

The fact that she was even a half term Governor of Alaska proves there's something really wrong with America. The question is what to do about it?
The fact that 99% of Congress is owned by corporate lobbyists, and probably 75% of the electorate votes on the basis of identity politics, superstition, and push-button wedge issues to the exclusion of all else doesn't give me much hope for the republic.

The Republicans are a one party regime that will never acknowledge the legitimacy of any other party. If you study their pattern of behavior, you will find party loyalty and ideology trumps pragmatic governance every time. They sneer at the idea that they must also govern with the needs of non-Republican citizens in mind. Why give the "enemy" any comfort? If you work for a Corporation, NEVER criticize Republicans, your future depends on it.

Essentially Specter is expecting a token sanction from the opposition to legitimize what the democrats are doing. But, since the bailouts many more people are paying attention and despite the countries loudest opinion makers making a lot of noise the American people are not comfortable with this much interference in the free market. The banks that failed should have failed and "Haliburtoning" the countries insurance companies is a road we don't want to go down.
