the film industry is so stupid for turning their backs on paul lemat. he is such a great actor and they haven't put him in a big budget production since the '90's. there's no excuse for that.
Pauline Kael & Jean Luc Godard debated the merits of this film on stage in Marin County back in 1980. Kael hated everything Godard liked about it & vice versa. Basically, both thought it was two movies. Godard speculated as to why Hollywood wouldn't accept a whole film about Melvin & Howard just conversing thru the desert while Kael thought the movie would have been a more realistic, satirical, comic mystery without the Hughes character being in it, at all. They were both right.
Fans of this movie should read John Simon's perceptive review. MELVIN AND HOWARD actually brought him to tears. The toughest critic out there, and this movie made him cry.
I LOVE this movie! The extras on the DVD are very good, the actors describe how they tried to keep it as true to the actual events as possible. The real Melvin Dummar has a bit part as a cashier and kept the story on track.
Paul Le Mat is so such a great actor...i hate hollywood for not recognizing talent. Paul should have made it big!

A great movie about the American Dream! Howard's money made the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

I often wonder if the whole story was true and he did actually give HH a lift and then was put in the will. Wow.

Hey rockygw,
In your credits you list Mary Steenburgen, but she was not in the clip. Pamela Reed is the one you should list. Just FYI.

You are so right - he should have gotten more work on film. What a gem of an actor - so natural and down to earth.
