It's amazing how critics hated Shelley's work back in her day while critics today consider Frankenstein one of the greatest horror stories ever written. I've read the book several times over and it's better with every reading.

To anyone who's never heard of or read the book before, check it out sometime. I think you'll enjoy it

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. She wrote it when she was 18.

Mary Shelley and her husband Percy were vacationing with Lord Byron at his villa in the Swiss Alps. She was listening to ghost stories and debate about the animism of dead matter at dinner. She went to bed with that on the brain, and woke up with the story of Frankenstein, full blown in her head. She was only 19 at the time. Some debated whether she truly wrote it. It was not believed that a woman of genteel upbringing could envision something so raw. Percy confirmed her as author.
