Personally, I prefer a film that lays out events and leaves you to ponder various implications without having to resort to large monologues in between to explain the situation to absolutely everyone. Inception springs to mind. These films will stay with you for ages, if they pique your interest.

I saw this film as a youngster and then read the manga a couple of years back. Explains ALOT. Suddenly, the film fits neater.

@gojira12345678910 Also...note that this Anime is an adaptation from the Manga. It is hugely different from the source material, but it works just fine...and in many cases is better!

I doubt the live action will be very good. They're splitting it into two movies and are trying to make it more like the Manga and less like this Anime version. But hey, we'll see...

Holy balls this is awesome, might as well be an official trailer for the film... btw I'd argue that while the artwork, animation, soundtrack, and sound design is some of the greatest of all time, the film itself is a very, very condensed form of the manga. The manga itself is over TWO THOUSAND pages long, so it's incredible that Katsuhiro Otomo was able to turn it into a film at all, so the manga in story far outstrips the film. Yet, the ending is still incredibly powerful.

And sadly we will probaby never see another film like it. This was done in the 'real' cell animation production, no CGI or new gimmicky crap. I've heard it has twice the normal number of cells as other films of the time which is why it's animated so well.
