why can't people just leave classics alone.....Akira was epic, is still epic and shall always be...if they make a remake, which they probably will i and my army of otaku will bash every fag who dares watch that steaming pile of celluloid crap
Warner Bros has greenlit live action of Akira. In July, Warners tapped Spanish helmer Jaume Collet-Serra (''Orphan,'' ''Unknown'') to direct the live-action version of Akira at budget of $90 million...Production on the pic is set for a late February / early March start 2012.
@wrangleroooo I thought Leonardo Di Carpio was gonna direct it? I love that guy, all of his work is awesome and hearing he was going to be involved with an Akira live action film got me really exited and hopeful that it would be kept true to the orginal while making it appeal to newer audiences as well.
@PorcelainRequiem Also, if the rumours are to be believed, the live action remake will attempt to stay truer to the source material... while at the same time relocating to good ol' New York city... my powers of prediction say FAIL...
But, as we learned from the Dragonball movie, rumours are not to be believed and then the end product will suck anyway. =)
@MrSubstance18 You know, is that an actual weakness? Have you ever read a novella or seen a work of art and realized what the meaning was right then and there without having to analyze and dig deeper? That is what AKIRA is - A work of profound art, to be explored! A wonderful movie, beyond the realm of anime and into the league of greatest MOVIES ever made.
@TwilightCodex Well I disagree. I think people might be able to find something if they ecplored it deeply enough, but the same goes for any movie, whether there actually is any meaning is another thing. I didn't understand the movie, because it wasn't portrayed well enough for me. I liked it, just not to much.
@MrSubstance18 The movie is a bit hazy on the details in places, I agree. Personally, I prefer a film that lays out events and leaves you to ponder various implications without having to resort to large monologues in between to explain the situation to absolutely everyone. Inception springs to mind. These films will stay with you for ages, if they pique your interest.
I saw this film as a youngster and then read the manga a couple of years back. Explains ALOT. Suddenly, the film fits neater.
I really...don't want to see a live-action version of this film. In the words of Mozart in the film Amadeus, "But it's perfect as it is! I can't rewrite what's perfect!"
@jaguar4u2 Of course, lets not put any actual confidence into the adaptation being good. Real filmmakers are terrible at that sort of thing, and real extremely biased die-hard fans should always control adaptations of things, just read some fan fiction to see how awesome they are.
@gojira12345678910 Also...note that this Anime is an adaptation from the Manga. It is hugely different from the source material, but it works just fine...and in many cases is better!
I doubt the live action will be very good. They're splitting it into two movies and are trying to make it more like the Manga and less like this Anime version. But hey, we'll see...
@tkemert20 OMG that's a great idea!! i'm getting goosebumps just by thinking about it. it would beat avatar hands down, not just because of special effects but a 100 times more powerful, beautiful story.
dat sht was dope son! they should remake that movie not that it needs to be remade i think it would be great if they made a grand theft auto game in that setting damn i wanna move to tokyo .
The soundtrack is insanely difficult to find, it's been out of print for over a decade. The north american release was available on the JVC Musical Industries Inc label. Catalog number JMI-1001, released 1990. Tracklisting: 1) Kaneda 2) Battle Against Clown 3) Winds Over Neo Tokyo 4) Tetsuo 5) Dolls Polyphony 6) Shohmyoh 7) Mutation 8) Exodus from the Underground Fortress 9) Illusion 10) Requiem
@Intelligoth yeah i stole mines from my brother which he stole from my cousin which i have no clue where he got it from but i love the last song, wow that album is amazing and freakin old too!
Holy balls this is awesome, might as well be an official trailer for the film... btw I'd argue that while the artwork, animation, soundtrack, and sound design is some of the greatest of all time, the film itself is a very, very condensed form of the manga. The manga itself is over TWO THOUSAND pages long, so it's incredible that Katsuhiro Otomo was able to turn it into a film at all, so the manga in story far outstrips the film. Yet, the ending is still incredibly powerful.
@jullesan One of THE best that is for sure! first saw it back in 1989 roughly, so its been 21 years since then!!! .. Time is a bitch but the movie is timeless and well before its time :)
amazing how he contained that whole manga in this anime and captured everything it was about in this film is just amazing.katsuhiros style is brought to life.the soundtrack was the first cd i ever bought, and the best cd i ever bought.nothing can touch it.
And sadly we will probaby never see another film like it. This was done in the 'real' cell animation production, no CGI or new gimmicky crap. I've heard it has twice the normal number of cells as other films of the time which is why it's animated so well. It is in my opinion the film that defines everything good about anime and it will never not be awesome.
Not to mention that they LIP SYNCHED the lips of the characters after the recording of the voice actors so they perfectly match, something very, very rare in any anime and also difficult to do
@Karas288 YES! This film goes beyond the realm of anime into something else. It's one of the most beautiful films ever made. I can only compare it with 2001 A Space Odyssey and Enter The Void
