Very nice. Again I'm being a technical geek but the first moon landing was the smoothest of the six, Neil waited a second or two after contact light before he cut the engine.
This is very nice movie: especially well combined with BGM & SFX.
However, I'm sort of 'missing' two critical points: 1: the end of the launch, when the S-IV engine is cut-off and 2: the TLI, when the S-IV is started again & Apollo 11 leaves Earth orbit to go to the Moon. What made you decide to not show these?
I was hooked on the American space programme when as a 13 year old I saw a little shiny dot slowly move into the dark half of the moon through my telescope as the sun glinted off the command module and LEM..that was cool.
Here's a few questions from a curious one: how did they verify orbit inclination in the Moon? Which equipment provided such reading and how? Great video by the way - one of your bests.
@vroomba03 yeah, each LM was brought down in a controlled descent towards the lunar surface, probably to avoid later collisions in upcoming missions, even though there weren't many manned ones >_>
@473271 I wish I did as I would love to release it in HD. Unfortunately, raw fraps footage eats up a ton of disk space, so I was unable to keep the video clips much longer after release.
@TexFilms thanks for deleting all "hoax" and "conspiracy" comments! good idea! avoid people getting into pointless arguments turning into name calling and making fun of each other for grammar mistakes haha.
anyways... GREAT VIDEO!! i love it! very well visual description of the trip to the moon
@FantasticBob7000 'ProtheanFilms' already addressed the reason as have I, but I see it's long been buried in the comments below. Here is the quote from his comment...
"Let's put this idea of a mistake on LOI to bed.
Tex executed LOI correctly, the reason it looked backwards was because of FlyByView MFD, which Tex used to get the fly-by shots. While it appears Apollo 11 is burning prograde, it is in fact burning retrograde."
@TexFilms That's a plausible explanation but raises the question as to the choice of camera-relative velocity. Does the Tex program automatically select fly-by shot angles? And it doesn't explain the second brief LEM RCS thruster firing in the wrong direction to stop the rotation.
I hate gnats assing such a cool video but as an engineer and Apollo fan I notice all this stuff. Believe it or not I love this vid, awesome job & thx for posting!
Just like the movie "Apollo 13", no one can get the sound of the Saturn V right. It did'nt go WHOOSH! It crackled in staccato bursts like a string of nuclear firecrackers. Walter Cronkite Described it as "God beating an enormous drum"
Ever wonder why the space stations don't go beyond low earth orbit? I mean 300 Kms , 400kms? I can travel more distance than that in a couple of hours. It's a "space" station, it's supposed to be in space. What is it doing so near to earth. Why don't it go to the moon like neil & buzz did or go beyond?
@Mattijjah85 OK I thought it was because of the radiation.
"Upgraded radiation shielding on the ISS is not working as well as expected. Radiation levels are about the same amount of radiation one would get on the ground in one year. The collision of cosmic rays with aluminum atoms in the hull, creates a shower of particles. Experts told New Scientist that a whole new type of shielding may be required for future missions beyond the Earth's protective magnetosphere." New Scientist Oct 2002.
@forestinfullbloom Space Stations are meant to be just that: stations in space. They are somewhat-"permanent" installations around earth orbit, meant to be outposts and labs. Anything more would be a spaceship, and such a project would take up too much money, too much resources, and too much time, unfortunately...
@5IrFaN5 -- This is the Apollo system of launch & lunar exploration vehicles. It consists of the Saturn V heavy-lift booster launching from Earth, plus the Apollo Command & Service Module and Lunar Module.
@5IrFaN5 -- I'm not very familar with simulators. I thought this one was pretty good for the images of the space craft in flight, although the lunar surface portion wasn't quite right.
I don't think the landing was quite right. I don't think they hovered in place for that long, and I'm not sure they shut down the engine quite that early.
Also, the lighting effects weren't quite right. The shadow side of things should have more light reflected from the lunar landscape.
@5IrFaN5 -- Oh, is that a flight simulator that you fly on your computer? I haven't played with computer games of any kind for quite a long time. But if I get back into them again, the various flight simulators look like fun.
Let me tell you something, when simming is done like this it reaches a whole other level beyond simple entertainment. This was enlightening. It put a highly complex undertaking in one smooth movie filling in the gaps that we never saw. Bravo.
This is the way to make a beautiful vid good music (no stupid hard rock) and sound effects and voices. I was there in 1969 when I see the landing live on TV on the moon. This good vid bring me back to that historical day in 1969. A lot of thanks.
Amazing, I actually have chills! I had no idea they detached the LM straight away after they left the moon! Fantastic job mate! I know water must have been a bit too much, but outstanding job. Well done. I love Apollo missions SO much.
in the last 30 seconds prior to touchdown the lem should be protrayed as mooving forward as it actually happenedskipping over the crater and the boulders below... anyway just a suggestion..
@brookestephen This is not my video. It was remade by TexFilms in 2008. I am just criticizing that it so little resembles "the real thing". Nixon's historic phone call to Tranquility base is cut off completely for no reason. I have no plans for stealing this movie.
@TheToymachineskater These mistakes would of course all be fatal and they are sloppy work anyway.
Simple stupid mistakes should always be avoided. They are dangerous and should be immediately corrected. Confusing feet and meters has already destroyed a Mars lander.
@applesweeter (1) We want to travel in space (not "to") because it is there! The Earth travels in space 30 km / second.
(2) Space exploration is exciting (have you seen Huyghens landing on Saturn's moon Titan in 2004) because all exploration is exciting. Without Columbus you would not ask these "questions".
(3) The heart has an easier job of pumping blood. You can really relax.
(4) Actually it is Ziolkovski's dream and he was a Russian. The whole world watched Neil and Buzz on the Moon.
I believe that men, born on Earth, traveled to and landed on the Moon in '69. For the technology we had at that time, stop and wonder in awe at just how many things had to go right for them to go there and return safely back to Earth. It was like pitching no hitters every game of the season. Sinking every drive from the tee box as a hole in one every time. Miracle, great designs, dedicated personnel, or all of those things coming together to achieve the unachievable. I remember it all.
It is still so very sad to me that Apollo was cancelled. The decision to cancel the Apollo program was in my view, the single most worst mistake this country has made. We had an opportunity to continue exploring the moon, and, to move on to Mars exploration, a truly great adventure filled with scientific learning and advancement. Our political leaders are small minded, at best.
the major problem is cutting down the 6 month travel.
a new plasma driven rocket can shorten the journey to 39 days each way,
since it only uses light gas it can burn for longer and cover more speed with less fuel waste. but its a bit harder landing a vessel on an atmosphere planet compared to the atmosphere-little satellite like the moon, a vessel needs more power to both land and then re-exit. thats the major problem with going to mars.
I do not usually watch simulator vids but this was very good. Just one comment, when you showed the luna orbit insertion the spaceccraft was pointing the wrong way. The rocket enginine would be slowing the spacecraft down so the engine would be facing the way it was going, not the way it came from.
It is true that the hardest part is getting the payload into orbit, but getting to the moon wasn't a cake walk either. It's amazing what we have done and I can't understand why poeple think the moon landing is fake.
When I was at Bible College in 1989, there was a signed picture on the wall of the Apollo Moon landing. In quotes was something that was written by Neil Armstrong and it said, "God walking on Earth is more important than man walking on the Moon". I will never forget that. Christianity took man to the Moon, whether you believe in God or not!
Well Done! What an amazing animation. I had to watch the LOI burn a couple of times as the fly-by angle does make it look a little strange on first viewing, but it is a great way to illustrate the various elements of this historic mission. Great video.
Man first flew in 1903 ............by 1957 the first satellite reached orbit. Do you realize the biggest challenge wasn't going to the moon but launching the payload required into Earth orbit? Once the Saturn V rocket was developed and made it possible it was comparitively a 'cake walk'
@LitterboxDiorama With all due respect , I don't think that most people who believe the moon landings actually took place see it as a cakewak. Low earth orbit is only a couple hundred miles above the earth's surface, whereas a trip to the moon is over 200,000 miles away.
There are two addons for the Apollo missions. The one featured in this video is AMSO. There is another called NASSP. ASMO has better models, and NASSP is more procedural. You can find links to both at O-Fs recommended addons page:
I have successfully downloaded and tested the add on. The only thing I can't understand, is how to use the throttle when orbiting the Moon in a moon orbiter. I need to slow my self down, but engines do not show any response.
One little thing I noticed: I think you missed the PTC (Passive Thermal Cycling or "Grill Mode") manuever Collins made at about 7 hours mission time. The rotation speed was 0,3 degrees/s or three rotations/h along the roll axis.
PLEASE HELP ME, okay i have a laptop, low specs, orbiter works fine with a bit of lag on it, but i tryed to play orbiter on my main PC that has far far more then the required specs for the game and it didnt work, pm me if you can help, thx
Tex executed LOI correctly, the reason it looked backwards was because of FlyByView MFD, which Tex used to get the fly-by shots. While it appears Apollo 11 is burning prograde, it is in fact burning retrograde.
Wow very impressed great piece of footage. Not every video like this shows the jettison engines between staging, the staging of the insturment ring and the LES system. Great detail
Awesome video! This is the only one I can find that shows all the seperations and extraction and jettison. It was a very complicated mission. I've been using toys to explain it to my 3 y/o daughter but now I'm gonna show her this! Thank you!
And all done in orbiter!!! Wow, I could not dream of getting that kind of frame rate!!

Of course, if you want you can build a station in geostationary orbit, but the costs of the operation will be a truly cosmic.

why does this remind me of the movie apollo 13?

It is true that the hardest part is getting the payload into orbit, but getting to the moon wasn't a cake walk either. It's amazing what we have done and I can't understand why poeple think the moon landing is fake.
threeboys42 1 year ago
When I was at Bible College in 1989, there was a signed picture on the wall of the Apollo Moon landing. In quotes was something that was written by Neil Armstrong and it said, "God walking on Earth is more important than man walking on the Moon". I will never forget that. Christianity took man to the Moon, whether you believe in God or not!

@ABWEndon
No, many tons of expertly crafted space vehicle, hundreds of thousands of man hours and hundreds of dedicated men and women took us to the moon.
The big bearded sky lummox did diddly.

Well Done! What an amazing animation. I had to watch the LOI burn a couple of times as the fly-by angle does make it look a little strange on first viewing, but it is a great way to illustrate the various elements of this historic mission. Great video.

This is awesome, great job dude ! Beautiful Pictures. This video reminds me, what a technical masterpiece this rocket was. *****

Man first flew in 1903 ............by 1957 the first satellite reached orbit. Do you realize the biggest challenge wasn't going to the moon but launching the payload required into Earth orbit? Once the Saturn V rocket was developed and made it possible it was comparitively a 'cake walk'
LitterboxDiorama 1 year ago
@LitterboxDiorama With all due respect , I don't think that most people who believe the moon landings actually took place see it as a cakewak. Low earth orbit is only a couple hundred miles above the earth's surface, whereas a trip to the moon is over 200,000 miles away.

Where can I download Apollo 11 rocket? Or maybe someone could explain to me how to import new Moon textures into Orbiter?
ParaglidingManiac 1 year ago
@ParaglidingManiac
There are two addons for the Apollo missions. The one featured in this video is AMSO. There is another called NASSP. ASMO has better models, and NASSP is more procedural. You can find links to both at O-Fs recommended addons page:

@vishnaborg,
I have successfully downloaded and tested the add on. The only thing I can't understand, is how to use the throttle when orbiting the Moon in a moon orbiter. I need to slow my self down, but engines do not show any response.
ParaglidingManiac 1 year ago
@ParaglidingManiac
Which one are you using?
vishnaborg 1 year ago
@vishnaborg,
I ahve downlaoded AMSO version 1.18 and Apollo 11 Sound Expansion Pack 1.1beta.
ParaglidingManiac 1 year ago
@ParaglidingManiac
You need to use the hover engine (Numpad "0"/Numpad ".")

Okay, thank you!

Awesome work!
One little thing I noticed: I think you missed the PTC (Passive Thermal Cycling or "Grill Mode") manuever Collins made at about 7 hours mission time. The rotation speed was 0,3 degrees/s or three rotations/h along the roll axis.

Incredible! But do you think it would be possible to simulate failures that happened to the Apollo 13 mission and reenact this event in Orbiter?

Let's put this idea of a mistake on LOI to bed.
Tex executed LOI correctly, the reason it looked backwards was because of FlyByView MFD, which Tex used to get the fly-by shots. While it appears Apollo 11 is burning prograde, it is in fact burning retrograde.
Tex did a fantastic job with this movie.

Thanks very much for explaining this! I did many times in the past, but gave up after people kept posting saying I did it wrong. :-)

Wow very impressed great piece of footage. Not every video like this shows the jettison engines between staging, the staging of the insturment ring and the LES system. Great detail
NAVC130VET 2 years ago
Awesome video! This is the only one I can find that shows all the seperations and extraction and jettison. It was a very complicated mission. I've been using toys to explain it to my 3 y/o daughter but now I'm gonna show her this! Thank you!
TonyN737 2 years ago
Is it me or in the video the LOI is made prograde instead of retrograde?
