Wow, I forgot to watch this performance this year. I can't believe all the negative comments for such a beautiful performance. Anyone who loves Alicia's music would love this version of this song. Anyone else doesn't need to be visiting with negative comments anyway. Just listen to who you like and enjoy it. Personally I don't think anyone could sing this better.
What appears to be off key and/or wrong notes to some is simply Alicia rearranging the song to have a gospel flair with some dissonant chord patterns to suit her own personal singing and performance style. Singers should not be out there to emulate others. Their ability to stand out from others is what makes them unique and provide us with various choices of artists. If every flower was a carnation, what a dull world we would live in!

She cannot sing. Too nasal, flat, breathing is off. Needs some lessons. The only songs she rips on are her own. Stick to your own songs Alicia. Doing vocal riffs is a camouflage for not being able to hit or hold certain notes.

Aiyee. This was probably the first time I've seen Alicia Keys mess up bad in one of her live performances. She was off the correct pitch at times and played the wrong chords in some parts of the song. I think she probably was thinking of trying to hit the right notes and forgot about the chords on the piano at the same time. I know the feeling because it's hard to play and sing at the same time. This is coming from a long time musician since I was 6 years old and working for a record label.

Great voice but even the greatest sometimes go off pitch. I hate to say it but despite what you guys are saying she does go off pitch. I am not talking about the flourishes and vocal gymnastics. On the simpler parts she was flat on a few words. For eg the line: 'A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices'. She was considerably flat on 'thrill', 'the' and '-joices'. and pretty flat on the word 'hear' in the line 'oh hear the angels voices'.

It's a shame that people are putting down her version, but you want to know what the worst one was...Ms. Christina Aguilera. I love Christina, I really do, but hers was the one that was really off. She barely belted the highest note during the climax. Her voice was very pitch and shaky. The higher she went, she strained and went very shrill. Alicia is singing with more ease, especially since this is her comfort range. I love both anyways, so don't take it the wrong way.
this is and will always be a very difficult song for the way you must easily slide in and out of specific vocal ranges required to pull it off smoothly.....but she did a good job anyways:)

She's playing in C, she is also singing in C. People are mistaking when she sounds nasal as flat. Also, she's doing runs- the only rule for runs is they must sound pretty, which they do. Alicia's got it all down.

I love AK, she is truly my favorite singer and half of the songs in my ipod are hers, but this performance is not good at all, this is not really the rigth song for her, sometimes things just don't work well.
Aretha franklin is another example of ugly tone. By tone, I mean the natural sound of her voice, its ugly. To hide this, she sings all over the place, screaming and wailing, and have the nerve to call it soul. Watching alicia Keyes do "o holy night" was a painful experience, due to her horrible tone and her ugly off key choices. Listen to Jewel do this same exact song, and you will know what 'beauty" is. Jewel's voice is the most pure beautiful sound to ever come out of a human being.

She has a beautiful texture to her voice that has a sultry color to it. It's androgynous and the same thing goes for Toni Braxton and Adele. They have deep womanly tones, but it still sounds beautiful and exotic. Alicia has a beautiful timbre that makes her voice sound ethereal. Her voice and singing style fits her genre in music.

Jewel does not have a beautiful tone, no depth, just Minnie Mouse-like. Aretha and Alicia have big husky tones, which adds to the emotion of songs that they sing. She has that deep and husky tone because she's a contralto, which is the deepest female singing voice. Generally sings comfortably from C3-D5. I bet you don't have any knowledge in pitch, tone, color, and voice classification because you should know that different kinds of singers use different tones/textures when they sing.
Actually, her tone is ugly, a lot of R-b singers think its cool to go low and high, they think its soulful, BUT, in reality it is done to hide an ugly ugly tone. If anyone wants to hear an example of beautiful tone, watch Jewel do this same song. ITS STUNNING. This was very ugly.

She riffed all those lines. She was doing what you call a melisma. She went off-key a bit during the ending, but she did not go off-key the entire song.

Great voice but even the greatest sometimes go off pitch. I hate to say it but despite what you guys are saying she does go off pitch. I am not talking about the flourishes and vocal gymnastics. On the simpler parts she was flat on a few words. For eg the line: 'A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices'. She was considerably flat on 'thrill', 'the' and '-joices'. and pretty flat on the word 'hear' in the line 'oh hear the angels voices'.

It's a shame that people are putting down her version, but you want to know what the worst one was...Ms. Christina Aguilera. I love Christina, I really do, but hers was the one that was really off. She barely belted the highest note during the climax. Her voice was very pitch and shaky. The higher she went, she strained and went very shrill. Alicia is singing with more ease, especially since this is her comfort range. I love both anyways, so don't take it the wrong way.

She was pitchy...actually, right off the bat. Still, I guess I just wouldn't refer to it as going off key. Although pitchy and off key mean the same thing, she never stayed off key I guess, for me to refer to it as going off key. She was very pitchy though.

She's playing in C, she is also singing in C. People are mistaking when she sounds nasal as flat. Also, she's doing runs- the only rule for runs is they must sound pretty, which they do. Alicia's got it all down.

Aretha franklin is another example of ugly tone. By tone, I mean the natural sound of her voice, its ugly. To hide this, she sings all over the place, screaming and wailing, and have the nerve to call it soul. Watching alicia Keyes do "o holy night" was a painful experience, due to her horrible tone and her ugly off key choices. Listen to Jewel do this same exact song, and you will know what 'beauty" is. Jewel's voice is the most pure beautiful sound to ever come out of a human being.

She has a beautiful texture to her voice that has a sultry color to it. It's androgynous and the same thing goes for Toni Braxton and Adele. They have deep womanly tones, but it still sounds beautiful and exotic. Alicia has a beautiful timbre that makes her voice sound ethereal. Her voice and singing style fits her genre in music.

Aretha and Alicia both have beautiful and smooth timbres, but it's beautiful for their genre of music. They are not classical singers. Your logic is so flawed, but beauty of tone is subjective. Jewel does not have a beautiful tone, no depth, just Minnie Mouse-like. Aretha and Alicia have big husky tones, which adds to the emotion of songs that they sing. She has that deep and husky tone because she's a contralto, which is the deepest female singing voice. Generally sings comfortably from C3-D5. I bet you don't have any knowledge in pitch, tone, color, and voice classification because you should know that different kinds of singers use different tones/textures when they sing.

@kushka43 How is "thrill", "hear", and "angel's voices" are off-key. If it was off-key, it would not go along to the chord progressions she's using. People often mistake going off key with riffing. She riffed all those lines. She was doing what you call a melisma. She went off-key a bit during the ending, but she did not go off-key the entire song.
