  • everytime the song pauses he gets all awkward and creepy around aunt Bea and she looks at him like O.o wtf? lol cracks me up every time i see this

  • @SammySpectacular10 ......LMAO!!! you're right!! Aunt Bee looks at Mr Darling like "ok, get this crazy guy away from me, NOW"

  • MAN THAT AUNT BEE..............FINE MAMMA

  • hey opie!! nice 58 impala you got there!!

  • great picking...

  • The Dillards from Salem, Missouri

  • me too @alyoshak, rodney and the boys showed 'em how it's done tonite. all y'all need to know that rodney and doug dillard had a huuuuuge role in the country rock movement that's considered so influential and essential these days. no wilco without rodney and doug!

  • I went to see the Dillards Band tonight. Rodney is the only original member left still touring, but they were great. They played this tune.

  • what episode was this on?

  • @Mckennawasright

I'm not sure but I think it's on an episode called 'Brisco declares for Aunt Bee' or something similar to that.

  • Love this...great music!

  • @2Foxxy4u You could definitely play the banjo part on a guitar however it would be more difficult without the open tuning of a banjo.

  • Is there a way to mix the main tune (the banjo) with the guitar part? Just wondering. c:

  • I'll run to my grandmother she won't let them hurt me she is wonderful like this song!

  • Oh the good ol' times...

  • It took me a time or two but I got the guitar part down on this woo hoo. That song make me cry.... LMAO

  • Notice Denver Pyle (Brisco Darling) almost crack up when he winks at Aunt Bea?

  • I miss North Carolina so MUCH! Weekends in Mt. Airy - the original Mayberry. Life is still beautiful. You just have to go find it in the mountains!

  • Classic TV with classic music. Don't get no better than this! Loved Aunt Bea too.

  • Love the guitar in this... those runs are awesome!!!!

  • Let me just say that Douglas Dillard in his prime was the world's greatest banjo player -- that's just my opinion, but I'm not the only one who thinks so.

  • how about dirty me dirty me Im disgusted with my self!!!

  • OOPs I got it wrong. Rodney Dillard played the guitar. Doug did play the banjo. Doug left the Dillards and teamed up with ex-Byrds singer Gene Clark and formed Dillard & Clark. Dillard & Clark recorded the original "Train Leaves Here This Morning" before the Eagles did it. Doug recorded many solo albums. He also had The Doug Dillard band.

  • Doug is the guitar player. They are a real band called the Dillards. I have many albums by them. On the Andy Grifith show they were called the Darlings. As I said Dough Dillard is the guitar player.

  • Doug, I'm really disappointed! You look like you're playin' a really nice tune on that there banjo, but I know that's your Pa makin' them banjo sounds on his jug!

  • lol at 1:31

  • Great music... lots of laughs. Andy Griffith. Black 'n White Television. Can it get any better? :) :) :)

  • great song!!!!!

  • RIP Mitch

  • I saw The Dillards in 2007 at the annual Mayberry Days Festival in Mt. Airy, N.C. Rodney (guitar) and Doug Dillard (banjo) are still performing, but Mitch Jayne (bass) and Dean Webb (mandolin) are no longer performing. Mitch has gone deaf and Dean is too ederly, but they will always be the best bluegrass band EVER!!!

  • This was absolutely the best in television. Miss the good ol' days.

  • @skylersdad100 Amen, so great on so many levels for those that get it. Nuff said..

  • chettmansberger, Never heard of the Augusto Nunos mandolin or the instrumentos de Corba label. Matter of fact I'd never even heard of a 12 string mandolin, either. Sorry I'm no help. I'll look the 3 things up online. You can do the same.

  • some of the actorsof the show played the exact opposite personalities in their real lives. Take Aunt B. she looks respectable, motherly and nice on the show but in the real world she was a major bitch

  • Uncle Jessie was great !!

  • The Dillards are my favorite bluegrass group..and their episodes on Andy Griffith were priceless...the "upside down owl" was a classic episode. haha !

  • there is a book called "everybdy on the truck" basically a book about the dillards and their andy griffith experiences. really good reading

  • That would be Rodney Dillard (Darling) on mandolin.

  • No, Rodney plays the guitar, Dean Webb plays the Mondolin and Mitch Jayne is the bass player.

  • Thnx. It has been yrs since I saw the Darlings or the Dillards. I got the mando player wrong. Thnx for the 411.

  • The Dillard on Mandolin is playing a Gibson " 3 point" F-5. Norman Blake plays one, too. Or used to. I made a drawing of his. I can find out which Dillard play mandolin if I go to IMDB. But that Gibson 3 pt is nice.

  • @1artistcyclist

Hello Artist, I'm wondering if you know anything about "Augusto Nunos" mandolins? I picked one up at a garage sale, it's odd but nifty-looking. Apparently 12 strings were on it originally, but it looks too old to play any more. I thas a paper lining inside that says Manufactured by "instrumentos De Corba (as best we can make out).

So just keep on pickin' , stay well and be happy. Long live the Darlings & The Andy Griffith Show!

  • Doug Dillard is the one playing banjo. Pure genious!

  • isnt this doug dillards tune

  • I wonder if Ron Howard likes bluegrass?

  • If only Aunt B could have farted she may have been just a bit more happy

  • The tune got its name from Doug Dillard, who wrote it. Dillard played Doug Darling on the show.

  • Love this tune.. trying to learn it on the guitar now..... what are the chords??? played in D, then G, & A????? somebody help

  • I"m loving these songs by the "darlings" on you tube! Makes you understand the meaning of "a smile in your heart"

  • Doug = Genius!

  • I 2nd that

  • From the DIllards 1st album. They and the Greenbriar boys took bluegrass into NY City, and changed the city. Sparkle sparkle sparkle.

  • Andy Griffith has the coolest hand picking style!

  • The Dillards are a legendary bluegrass band from Salem, MO. Doug Dillard is one brother, but I forget the other's name & who plays what instrument.

  • Rodney is the other brother, he's the guitar player

  • This is one of my favorite songs from the Dillards...

  • SAME!

  • This always cracks me up! ROFLOL! :D They're both so cute...

  • dougs tune was writen by doug of the Dillards

  • How about dirty-me, dirty-me; I'm disgusted with myself?....

  • "Oh, that one makes me cry."

Somehow I can't help but wonder why that makes him cry...

lol and poor Aunt Bea... she's so terrified of Brisco...

  • I love watching Mr. Darlin flirt with Aunt Bee. So hilarious... They compliment each other so much acting together.

  • eh, you pick it & I'll jug it! - LOL

  • Gotta love the Dillards and Andy!!!

  • What is the band´s real name?

  • The Dillards

  • the dilliards

  • there real name is The Dillards.

    They are really great.

  • The Dillards

  • @davidperi The Dillards

  • @davidperi

    the dillards

  • @davidperi The Dillards

  • @davidperi The Dillards

  • @davidperi The real name of this band was/is The Dillards. The brothers were Doug and Rodney. Doug Dillard later teamed with Gene Clark and they became Dillard and Clark and are generally considered to be the "grandfathers" of country rock music.. They recorded only 2 or 3 records, but one of the string players in the band was a young musician named Bernie Leadon. Leadon went on to form The Eagles with Glen Fry, Randy Meisner and Don Henley.

  • @fbrown172 Great info! The Dillards were one the pioneering "progressive" bluegrass groups. Their vocal harmonies were unlike anything in country or bluegrass at that time. Their a cappella version of "I'll Fly Away" still takes my breath away.

  • @demanton I totally agree! I my opinion, they represent perfectly what John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) referred to as traditional American music. They had a delightful harmony and were exceptional musicians!

  • How about Dirty Me, Dirty Me; I'm Disgusted With Myself! - LOL

  • Why doesn't anyone play the Jug anymore? Makes you pretty light headed.

  • especially when u still got shine in it

  • If you liked that get one of the dillards cds preferable the one woth backpourch music and picking and fiddling

  • I would love to hear Alison Krauss and Union Station cover some of these songs....Their type of style has always reminded me of the Darlings/Dillards...

  • OMG! I LOVE how Mr. Darling looks at Aunt Bee! I crack up everytime I watch this. I have to buy some of these on DVD....if anything my kids need to watch them.

  • its not MIke Nesmith...but it does look like him.

  • Mike Nesmith of the Monkee's sitting on the hearth,

  • Good Stuff!!!

  • Can't stop listening to this one!! What a bunch of great musicians. The banjo line is absolutely amazing and the tune is one of the nicest I've ever heard. Now I'm trying to learn it on my Mastertone but it's not as easy as one might think and it deseverves to be played properly. Thanx 4 posting. Love

  • Great tune - I Like that Banjo pickin & a Grinnin .

  • haha did u see aunt B gettn gun shy!!!!!

    loved it!

  • Excellent!

  • This is great! Thanks for sharing! 5+Star's!

    Very best of wishes!

    GinMillBill

  • in mountain wedding, what was the songs name when they first walked in the cabin...been tryin to figure this out for ever...rl i will return to this post for answer..

  • Are you thinking about Dooley? I have it as one of my favorites.

  • When they first walked into the cabin and while they were walking up to it, they were playing their version of Old Joe Clark. They played Dooley afterwards

  • love the Darlings'

  • Dats good stufff!!!!~~~~~~~~~just good stuff!`

  • Simply the best. Where have all the good times gone? Thanks You Tube! For bringing them back! Oh, and MikeB43

  • every time i see doug play i git all fired up and git my banjo out and pick for a while.he really inspires me.i have a friend who went to school with the mandolin player.[i don't know his name]my friend comes from missouri.

  • There is an older episode of Andy Griffith with the Darlings playing this tune. However, it was entitled, "Slimey River Bottom." Lol, funny but true.

  • the man that inspired me to learn the banjo......great to see them again

  • Me too! I have been picking a bit, got myself an archtop banjo on the way!

  • Never heard of "Doug's Tune"...in my neck of the woods, we call this tune "Beaumont Rag".

  • Need to check out Beaumont Rag performed by the Tuttle Kids. Also an awesome tune.

  • On their "Live Almost" album, Mitch said that the people back home all had little plastic statues of Andy Griffith on their dashboards! lol

  • "That one makes you cry paw...."

  • classic! thanks for posting this!!!

  • The Dillards! One of the best!

  • I love Aunt Bee's response!

  • best tv show is history!! I love Doug's Tune...it's great fun to play!

  • Aunt Bea had a classic look at 1:33, cracks me up!

  • There was a young guy named Rick Dunham in LA who used to do a real nice Doug's Tune. I always thought I'd hear more from him. Well, he was young in the '80s.

  • I like the hip hop tune at 1:35 that was classic the way Aunt Bee and Briscoe Darling looked at each other. Also it might be interesting to note that on the Public Domain DVDs that you get from 99c store/Dollar General/Family Dollar stores all have this them instead of the whistling tune on there DVDs for the intro to the public domain episodes.

  • That's famous director Ron Howard sitting on the arm of the sofa. As a kid he played Opie on the Andy Griffith shw!

  • Famous sonofabitch director, yeah. Little bastard.

  • the dillards are IMO the best bluegrass band i have ever heard. if someone can show me similar artists please send my way!

  • "Dirty Me, Dirty Me...I'm disgusted with myself!" "That one makes me cry!" :0)

  • This is such a beautiful & happy tune. Loved it!

  • i agree with paul - all time greatest............ever

  • Anyone who says they don't like this song is lying! lol.

  • Watching Briscoe flirt with Aunt Bee makes me laugh every time.

  • A portion of this tune was played in the first episode that the Darlings were in during the third season. Briscoe called it "Slimy River Bottom." Of course, it made Charlene cry.

Yes, the Dillards are still active. At least Rodney and Doug are. There is a clip somewhere on here of them playing "Dooley" at the Oakboro Music Hall in Oakboro, North Carolina. A town not unlike Mayberry.

  • Deab Webb is still up and playing, too. He's got a band down in Branson called Missouri Boatride. They just played down here at the Ozark Bluegrass Fest yesterday.

  • Great!! GREAT!!! GREAT!!! I know this song on the Banjo, Never actually saw it in the show though...thought I had saw them all...keep them coming!!!

  • The Darling family is played by the bluegrass group, The Dillards. I believe they are still active.

  • They are still active. Search "the dillards" on google for their website.
