This is a very interesting way to get participation mark. I also went to class last Wednesday, I like the class environment, almost every person got the opportunaty to answer something in class. In my last semester, I will have a great experience in this class.
I really like the fact that Professor Richardson encourages active class participation because it is a great way for students to learn. Not only are students helping themselves by actively asking questions and seeking out information, they are in turn helping their peers out as well. This works well with the information given in reading the newspaper clip because students can read the news and share interesting helpful info with their peers as well.
I think the way that Prof Richardson allow its students to earn class participation is creative as he utilizes the usage of new technology form Internet. It is the first and only class that I have in UTM that allow students to earn participation marks in both online and offline manners. I think other University course in UTM should apply a similar concepts in it.
I think this non-traditional way of gaining class participation marks is very effective. Not only is it very easy to obtain but at the same time it allows us (students) to learn along the way especially when finding worthy articles/ topic-related material to send as emails.
Since you let us use various methods to participate, not only do we find it easier to earn marks but also feel encouraged to incorporate the points discussed in class, learn from them and contribute later as then we can make better and more qualitative contributions. We learn multiplied times in your class than what we would in any other class.
Another great benefit is that we can easily catch up on participation is we lag behind during the beginning of the term.
Actually, i think that the way you count the participation mark is quite fair to students. Students can earn their participation mark in different ways such as speaking in the class, sending emails and leaving comment in youtube videos. Compare to my other courses in UTM, which usually counts only on the class participation, the way you allows students to earn participation marks are flexible. It also encourages students to do more research on a specific topics.
I feel that everyone knows what they have to do when you FIRST go over how to get Participation/Contribution marks in the class in the beginning of the semester. Some understand the importance of this whole concept of participating, some don't. I feel that you are doing a great thing by constantly reminding people to participate. But this is a fourth year course if people don't do it, its their fault.
"this is a fourth year course [415] if people don't do it, its their fault." - true true, you make an important distinction Ameerah, which is why i ain't gonna mention it anymore this semester............
Getting class participation marks is very easy and helps you learn along the way. With many options at your disposal including, commenting on videos, attending class, and sending emails, there should be no reason for anyone to receive a mark of less than 80% on this portion of your grade. At first you'll start participating simply to get marks, but as you continue, you'll start to learn more and I've even found myself doing research outside of class to further my knowledge.
Would it be a disadvantage that I am an exchange student from UK? Because I haven't got the basic knowledge of the Canadian system ,so that I can not support the answers with the Canadian background in the classes and the exams.
Thank you professor for explaining this clearly. It is a relief to know that we can earn participation marks through other channels besides the traditional in-class method.
Yes Danni, the technological environment within which we teach and you learn, is not traditional, so we need to be flexible and allow for other types of contributions. Glad you appreciate that.
I love the fact that there are so many ways of getting class participation marks. So, if a student isnt one who always put their hand up, then there are other ways that students can get marks. But still the point to the participation marking is getting students to get all sorts of participation marks, so that the student learns to show initiative at school and even at home.
How do you get class participation points, easiest way raise your hand in class, give your name, say something relevant or useful (dropped the ball on that one)
second easiest way, comment on the copious amount of Tim Richardson YouTube videos.
You could even tutor someone, if you feel you are tutor worthy

doing research outside of class to further my knowledge... that is the whole point, and the reason why you got an A+ on C.P. in a previous course

Getting Class participation points.
Step 1: Go 2 Class and put up your hand
Step 2 : Comment on youtube clips (they are fun to watch)
Step 3: Ask questions and make comments - no shame in that
Step 4: Tutor a class mate
The options are available, just get'er done!!
