I believe that if they wouldn't have done newlyweds they would still be together. They hadn't even been married a year when they started the show and I think that putting their lives in the limelight like that was stupid.
They BOTH fucked up certain parts of their relationship, but HE was the one that wanted to go to counseling and work it out, SHE wanted the fame and didn't want his waning career (as of then) to drag her down.
They both are stubborn and don't want to admit any fault of their sides, that's the reason (I believe) they haven't gotten back together. Listen to both their songs post-divorce: Most are about each other and what could have been.
Maybe they'll wise up one day and see what they had.
