  • Seeing the flywheel being moved just bought it all back to me.

Happy Memories of a pumping station in Clennon Valley Goodrington.

My granddad was an engine minder for the last years of his working life.

    Thanks for sharing ..

  • That would be 1164.5 ft/lbs of torque at 345rpm!

  • Wish I had a shed big enough for that !!

What is the purpose of barring the engine via the flywheel ?

  • @turboslag if you are referring to the stuff at the beginning of the video, they do this to get the engine to top dead center (i.e. correct starting position).

  • @turboslag

Usually, not all the of cylinders of an Allen diesel were equipped with air starting valves, so the engine had to be barred to a position where the 'starters had all the rockers 'down'.

    This was a 'starting position'.

  • Lengthy startup procedure isn't it? I hope these old guys that know these machines are training people to take care and operate them.

  • actually, he did show the starting of the engine, but I was recording this on my camera phone, and just a she was about to start it, someone phoned me, and the video cut out! lol

  • Too bad he didn't show that actual starting of the engine. The red handle just above the flywheel delivers the starting air.
