  • First time I've ever seen him play the guitar and with accompaniment. One of my favorites.

  • Is it just me or does he look strung out here? I know he was a junkie during that period of time...

  • It definitely IS Dick Clark narrating. Might be a clip from one of Dick's "Specials" he would telecast from time to time although the club/stage appears to be very small. Maybe a small New York club like the Peppermint Lounge?

  • I could be wrong, but that sounds like Dick Clark of American Band Stand at the beginning and end.

  • My name IS Ruby. ^^ Ahaha. Love the song. :'D

  • He could sing. He was GREAT. Thanx for sharing . And the B side to this single was just as good (He'll only hurt you)

  • Dion looks a tad strung out.

  • Elvis should have covered this!

  • This is my favorite Dion song. I love the Beatles as much as anyone, but some people think that rock n roll started with them. Dion was a great singer and songwriter who could hold his own with anyone coming after him.

  • Dion Francis DiMucci..... This guy had some GREAT Tunes!!! "Donna, The Prima Donna" is one of my faves!! As this one *Ruby Baby* too... Great rare video!! Thanx for sharing!

She wants to know if "Dion, will you be mine"....Great music, someone please transport us back to the era where you could listen to this kind of music every day. These poor kids now a days have no idea of what real music is.....

  • You say thisas if in the past. But the music lives still among us.

  • Great song. Really rocks!

  • Who did this song originally?

  • @killjoytjp

Ruby Baby, written by Leiber & Stoller, recorded by The Drifters in Sept 1955, released as a single in March 1956.

  • @MrDavet65 THAT VERSION SUCKED COMPARED TO THIS ONE BY DION !

  • @avantill Nerp dude... The Drifters original version edges this out. Dion also ripped Drip Drop from them as well. Knew good tunes when he heard 'em...LOL.

  • @killjoytjp The Drifters

  • this is a nice cover. i like the dion touch he gives it

  • Now Dion has a big hang up with his chrome dome bald head and always insists on wearing a goofy looking hat

  • so olld !!

  • you caan find Dion still singing the blues here on you tube search Dion blues but then go through celion dion and find it

  • @majorl31 HAHA!!!! Yep. Dionne Warwick clutters up the bunch too.

  • @bs3057 AMEN!

  • My cousin Carlo on the drums, one of the Belmonts... me and my Uncle Joe's influences Thanks Carlo

  • Great song!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Rocker...Classy guy

  • That's Dick Clark's voice introducing him so maybe it's Where the Action Is.

  • @harvey1954 I think you're right..this must be from the TV show Where The Action Is..loved that show and think Dion is fantastic!!

  • This cannot be from 1963.

The fiddle shaped bass is an Eko 995, a model issued around early 1965.

  • @hagst27 - I agree. Not only that, but judging by the fashion and style in the video it has to be by 1965-66.

  • @dolomite51 '63

  • the bobby darin of doo wop.

  • @jazzstars Really? I believe Bobby Darin was a all around showman, Class,Style,Showmanship. Dion couldnt hold his hat.

  • YEAH ! & HE STILL HAD GREAT HAIR, NO STUPID HATS !

  • Woo Hoo old dreamy eyes himself!! LOL Phyllis

  • One of my favorite stompers. Dion's musical spirit is a perfect balance of swagger and class.

  • MAGIC SONG FROM MAGIC YEARS !!!

  • I love the Drifters, I truly do, but Dion's version wins hands down!

  • Dion is brilliant , all the oldie hits plus be sure to check out albums from later like Wonder Where Im Bound , Sit Down Old Friend and Born To Be With You . Magical.

  • This is a great vintage video.

  • Thankyou for posting and sharing this video. Dion has had a very interesting life. Still sounds great and just celebrated his 71 birthday in July 2010. (btw, the handsome guitarist on the right is John Falbo, my friend and partner. He truly enjoyed the adventure of working with Dion) Thanks again : D

  • the bass is an old ampeg bass violin shape was popular back then

  • Man, makes my foot start tappin' just like it did back then!

I don't listen to the radio much now 'cause its just NOISE.

This was music you could "get your groove on" with!

  • no one does it better better :-)

  • Belmont Ave/187th Street. Bronx NY. Better known as "little Italy"...

  • Great! Ten thousand times great! Wonderful music, great singer! Many could learn!

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Mr. Dreamy eyes himself. The best "Dion" Thx 4 posting this one Rick....Phyllis

  • @whatblah43 or did joe strummer look like him? Dion the real deal from the streets of the Bronx. Joe public school boy.

  • who cares what religous persuasion he was or is? What a dumb comment!

  • he became a Christian; but then he became a Catholic. i wonder did he grow up as a "Catholic?" great song.

  • @roaringwaterbay Of course he grew up Catholic he's Italian

  • @roaringwaterbay

Last time I checked Catholics are Christians

  • @coy0te9 well, i guess there is the question of definitions.

  • I would bet this is from 1965-66, due to the longer hairstyles and clothing...

  • @ncasti I agree. Also, the bass player is using the same kind of bass popularized by Paul McCartney.

  • Geez... I hope I still have the 45 somewhere... one of my all time faves.... (I was two when this was filmed!!)

  • Yeppp ... ya bet my feet is tapping alright ... whenever I wander back to the 60s it really makes me happy that I was around then and I can recall some of the this-and-that.

... Dion surely was superb and TG we can still groove around his tunes.

  • Sexiest voice in rock and roll.

  • Toss up between Ruby Baby & Drip Drop as my fave Dion tune!

  • @MrShannonator Good taste you have, as did he: both are Drifters tunes written by Leiber and Stoller I think.

  • the Great Dion !

  • He's cool and smooth. Dion from the Bronx and The belmonts. I dig the sound.

  • We both love Doo Wop that's a given. Personally Shep from the limelights also sang with the Heartbeats..... Just different tastes we have.

  • Rock Roll at it's finest. Dion had/has such a GREAT voice!!!

  • I was 14 and stayed before the juke box in st tropez for 5-6 audios of this make- me -dream song, she did'nt notice. phil heavenrich belgium

  • Is the guy on the left of Dion his brother ?

  • from "WHERE THE ACTION IS" ... woulda-been around-1966

  • I'm gonna do this song for karaoke

  • Dion did a great job with this song. The Drifters did a classic version in the mid 50's. Check it out.

  • Great singer...and one of his most under-rated songs. This was "cool." Precursor of "My Baby Does the Hanky Panky"

  • the alltime king of doo wop. Ain't no doubt about it.

  • @coyotesong You should hear more people. Fred Paris, The Dubbs, The Crests.

  • @115musiclover Love the Crests, know just a little of the Dubbs, and don't know Fred Paris. I doubt if you want the details of my 'argument', but in any event, I stick with it.

  • @115musiclover hey, musiclover, thanks for the tip on Fred Paris...I knew the Five Satins but didn't know the names of the personnel. But YT has a number of posts and you're quite right, he/they're great!!!! They sound like doo wop royalty to me!

  • @coyotesong I personally think you are showing that you dont know too much of Doo Wop. " Shep & The Limelights " Shep personally makes Dion sound not so swift

  • @115musiclover thanks for your gracious observation.

  • @115musiclover BTW, for my money, shep and the limelights don't cut it. They're ok, nothing more.

  • yeah!!! Dion is my favorite guy of all time.

    Dion

    dean martin

    tony bennett.

    thats my list hahah

  • An absolute classic...doo wop with serious attitude....love it...

  • That is Carlo on drums! Strange, the group broke up in early 1960, then the Del Satins backed him on Ruby Baby, danm, back to the drawing board, scratch my head again.

  • The SONG was a hit in 1963, but this was actually a 1966 appearance on "Where The Action Is". Dion looks out of it here. Still an all-time favorite song of mine!

  • IN LOVE with Dions voice.....everytime i hear it captures my soul ,such an AMAZING artist !!!!!

  • A haunting vocal, indeed. One of the greatest voices, along with those of Roy Orbison & Elvis, of course.

  • here me talkin! This is some dope ass shi#t.

  • damn...this song is sooo sick.

  • @PunkRock388 Yeah right. And punk rock isnt sick huh? lmfao

  • A great song from the best era in music history.

    Send me back in time.

    PLEASE!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill I'm with you George, if you get your wish please take me with you!

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill you will when you die and go to Heaven

  • originally by the drifters in 1957

  • Leiber & Stoller again, if I recall.

  • ur right

  • Those guys just about literally wrote the book on early rock.

  • right u r.

  • Friggin Dion came off with this song. It is sooo cool indeed.

  • This song is soooooooooo coooooooool!!

    Hear me talkin' now ;-)

  • And "Abraham, Martin, and John" one of his best even after the Bristish invasion. Dion a real cool DooWopper.

  • Hated my name ... Ruby... wanted to be Sandy or Julie or anything but Ruby... until Dion came out with this record my senior year in high school ...have loved my name ever since

  • Believe it or not Ellie Greenwich didn't die with the British Invasion.Ever heard of Leader of the Pack,Hanky Panky,Chapel of Love,or River Deep Mountain High?

  • ITALIAN BABE.....

  • lol that is weird! i hate when that happens, they just ruin things for us lol

  • dion is amazing i am only 12 but i think tht he is the best u can tell he is getting older there but he is still a really good singer and is really cute !!

  • never had an impure thought... till I heard Dion :)

  • Ruby Ruby when will you be mine?

  • The big Dion in a big theme made by giants Lieber & Stoller. Historic matter, and of course theme is in playback, but the video is a wanderful matter.

    Willy- Argentina

  • I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but this is most likely from "Where The Action Is", broadcasted on January 19, 1966. Great song and clip, though.

  • A great song and a rare clip !

    I like it !!

  • One of the best rock n roll singers...I'm surprised Utube has removed this one yet.

  • Yeah, Dion and a lot of others suffered an early demise because of the British Invasion (and it was An Invasion!

Beatles are OK and I LOVE the Rolling Stones but man it became a lil too much after a while. All these great (and becoming Great AMERICan artists were shoved aside. There's a book out called How the Beatles Killed Rockn"Roll (American r/r that is!) Rave on Dion and the others, you're still live on in or hearts and dreams.

  • Dion was and is great, no doubt. The British Invasion didn't kill American R n R. It just got rid of all the crap that was out there! The Beach Boys & Four Seasons flourished. Dion continued to have hits. There were lots of great American rock artists during that time period. Another is Roby Orbison. Thankfully, Pat Boone, Ellie Greenwich and others no longer had a stranglehold on American youth through control of the radio stations.

  • Cool song. Win.

  • When the Beatle's hit the scene there are some acts that shouldn't have been eaten up by the British Invasion and Dion is one of them.

    The King Of COOOOOOOl Dion

  • He's got such a great voice!

  • tres bon merci thank you

  • Song was really awesome,,but the tv show production could use a little polishing.

  • I love this song

we line danced to it in school!!

    ♥ this song

    ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

  • Always the greatest from that era.

  • This is from American Bandstand; Dick Clark is introducing him. Dion credits his recovery to his wife and family - now 40 years. He is a believer; heard him recently on Bill Bennett's morning radio show. He is filled with gratitude for his life, recovery and ability to still perform.

  • I'm sure he was grateful that he wouldn't spend $36 to go with Buddy Holly on that plane on February 10, 1959. Thankfully he didn't..

  • God had His hand on him, gave him more time for a purpose the Lord only knows about.

  • From what I read his last hit before addiction took over was Prima Donna (1963). The Beatles mania started & all other music was basically ignored no matter how good--Dion's too. After this happened he went through a 5 year serious addiction period & stopped in 1968. The video here may represent his addiction period. He does not look like he normally does-- his face is very pale & thin which is such a shame because he's such a good looking man-- not just a really great talent.

  • Addiction to heroin ?

  • Yes. When he tried to kick that he started drinking. With the help of his wife's dad

he was able to acknowledge his addictive personality and see things more the way his father in law saw things--a different perspective that helped him chase away some of his lifelong insecurities, pain, and anger. His father in law was a former alcoholic and his son (Dion's brother in law) died of alcoholic related seizures. I just finished reading Dion's autobiography: The Wanderer.
