I had shark fin soup once at the wedding banquet of a wealthy Thai/Chinese couple.Because there were many guests, serving shark fin soup to everyone was one way that these 2 families could say, look at us,we have money. My first thought was that it was FUCKING TASTELESS.And how could that guy in the restaurant say he didn't know the shark fin industry was depleting shark populations? He just didn't care.Typical Chinese attitude towards animals.Their enjoyment of eating comes before animal welfare.
Sharks take 13-15 years to reach sexual maturity, and only give birth once a year. They simply cannot keep up the rate that they have been fished and they are at high risk of extinction.
its good people are finally recognizing the wrongdoings of human kind but its SOO damn annoying where i hear.. "oh hey i will eat that VEAL sandwich but I don't want shark fin soup because I'm politcally correct and that's cruelty..." how about you care about all animal causes...they are all just as vicious.
Many documentaries about finning. Non of them have the weight to push the government to do something or anything. Don't blame the people who buy them, blame the people who have the power to stop it but not doing anything. Good example is the banning of ivory trade.
I'm of Taiwanese heritage and I've eaten shark fin soup before. It sucks. The broth is okay, but the fin doesn't even taste good. A lot of Taiwanese are just ignorant of the ecology and the natural world around us and that's one of the big problems...
china is always fucking shit up first they put lead in toys, then they copy everybody and make unsafe cars, and now they dont care about sharks, fucking chinese people are such ungrateful assholes at least the ones in this video
It isn't a matter of who's culture is right nor who the world revolves around, animal cruelty should be condemned all the same and this is just one example. Does it make it right to continue destroying the ecosystem? What are you going to do when the problem goes out of hand? "Science has an answer?" Rubbish. Cull the problem at its roots, if not what are you going to do when it goes into overgrowth?
There is cultural bias, people are more willing to overlook the errors of their own and point out the dirt on others. Its easy to say a particular food or way of life should cease when you yourself don't practice it.
The best we can hope for is that science eventually comes up with a way to sustainably deal with the unsustainability problem, because I doubt any people will willingly give up their culture, nor should any other culture have the right to make such demands from others.
Its not about things going round the western world. I'm an Asian myself and the big issue behind this is that it's not even a sustainable way of doing it. The way the kill sharks Just for the fins is just inhumane. Would you like your hands and legs chopped off and you left alone to live your life?

@superstarivania I doubt it, this has nothing to do with being humane as America has its fair share of inhumane animal treatment as would any country that indulges factory farming of meat. As for sustainability the high demand for caviar in the west has given rise to illegal poaching of wild sturgeons pushing them to the brink of extinction in the Caspian Sea with jars of the stuff selling for as much as 15,000$ a jar.
I'm pretty sure Gordon Ramsey serves caviar in his fine dining restaurants.
As long as the endangered sharks are not being killed who care about what they eat! Its their lifestyle and culture. If you don't like it just leave! Besides, Taiwanese are not even the biggest consumer of shark fin soup in east asia, it is Hong Kong! He needs to do more research.
Gordon is a western chef therefore theres no way he can taste the complexity and subtlety of this asian dish.
People in the west should really grow up and understand that the world doesn't revolve around them.
Shark fin soup makes man's penis small. No wonder Chinese penis are small!

@cphulala That doesn't make it morally correct. Regardless of what you might think, there is such a thing as a superior morality.
