  • We have the same last name, dear Andy, and I have a second cousin named Andy. Weird.

  • He's a legend!!

  • such great underpining harmony!

  • A true Gem! To be honest, I have no idea how he and his ilk do it. So beyond...

  • Ive seen Andy in concert 6/7 times. He is my folk god and has had a big influence on my life music wise. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look up all his other music. Especially the dvd where he hitch hiked around Romania, during the time when the country had that bad dictator who was later hanged. Andy camped in the woods at night. Then during the day busked in a local zoo. Enjoy people. KC from Wales in the UK.

  • @briantkom I was there at the Cat and Fiddle too - fantastic.

  • 3 people are facists...

  • @canyoncreekster

thats not even remotely creative. can you people please stop pointing out the number of dislikes? we can see it too, you know.

  • Is that an up side down 'Sunrise' - ?

  • isint he great

  • I know I commented only 4 days ago but I keep coming back to this magnificent performance!

  • Excellent , could someone what gig this was ? Is this from a dvd and is that billy bragg walking out at the end?

  • Truly amazing!

  • 8-string guitar...?

  • @RocknRoller74 It's a Bouzouki-Guitar. Don't worry, I'd never seen one before either.

  • @streetcornersongbird Is it tuned like a bouzouki?

  • @RocknRoller74 I'm not sure, But It sounds like GDAD.

  • What a legend.

  • I got to hug Andy Irvine a few months back after an awesome show, and I am still feeling the warmth of that show and that hug. A true modern-day bard. One of my heroes. :-)

  • I can't get enough of this song!

  • Andy i love you , for many reasons, one of which is you basically say "all you fascists can stuff it".

  • Love this.

  • Everyone goes on about fascism and how bad it was, which isn't wrong. But people fail to think or even mention the Jewish ran Gulags in the Soviet Union that killed 66 million Christians. So Communism is thousands times worst than fascism. Guess what's constitution is word-for-word like the Soviet Unions constitution? The EU. Come on Ireland say YES!

  • @32GaugeSlug - Communism is Dead. Its all about Greed not. Bankers have got away with murder. The poor are paying the price. This was all worked out in advance. New World Order.

  • @sainglain Communism is the bankers choice of docrine. Communism and Socialism is what's coming down the pipe. Look at what's happening to Europe - it's a mirror of what happened in USSR. Communism didn't fail and never died, it was a success and is the future for us unless we do something about it. Google "Cultural Marxism".

  • Hell yeah!... looks like Billy Bragg there at the end as well.

  • First class Andy! First saw him play live back in 85 and ended up at a session with him afterwards. Seeing this, he just gets better with age - like a good bottle of port.

  • Great to hear socialist music at its best .Thank God i grew up in that era in County Armagh to believe that the market ,profit or me was NOT the most imortant thing in life .

We were responsible for all of humanity not just our own greed .

    Wee Belfatman

  • I am absolutely in love with this man.

  • I always had a hard time getting into Woodie Guthrie, I was able to finally discover him through Andy Irvine. Andy Irvine's influence on me cannot be understated.

  • emotional response. can feel it in my stomach.

  • Ah Andy. All Class

  • Just an incredibly versatile and amazingly talented man with a voice that could melt the iciest of hearts.

    Thanks for the great post.

  • you said it perfectly!

  • And what is that guitar called hes using? A majobanjoguitar?

  • It's called a "Bouzar" ( bouzouki-guitar)

made by Stephan Sobell... quite an instrument.

But it's not really the same in anyone else's hands. :)

  • For Woody

  • Really didn't know Andy was out on his own, where would you get get it!!!

  • Murrmac -- Do you know that Woody's guitar had a message inscribed on it that ran this machine kills fascists?

  • Awesome song!!! does anyone have the chords, by chance?

  • Went to one of Andy's gigs at Carlisle Folk Club in the North of England a couple of years ago. It was a great night out. The guys a brilliant singer, instrumentalist and entertainer as this video shows. Thanks for posting.

  • what's with that "all you fascits bound to lose" part? it really ruins teh vibe of a great song...

  • Its a woody guthrie song

  • Its an Andy Irvine song trubite to woody Guthrie.

  • I know, I mean "all you fascists bound to lose" is a woodie guthrie song.

  • ballbag!

  • .."what's with that "all you fascists bound to lose" part?" ...

go study some, learn about Woody Guthrie, and you will understand what's with that part.

you will also understand why it's totally central to this song.

    hope this helps.

  • People of Guthrie's generation considered the central event of their life was the Spanish Civil War when they took up arms against the Fascists.

  • If you don't see the relevance of that line to the whole song, your concept of Woody's "vibe" is way off the mark. Woody himself would probably be shaking his head about people's talk of the song's "vibe"---what about its message?

  • I saw andy play just a few nights ago and i must say he is a gentleman couldnt fault him all about the music really insipired me to pick my guitar and mandolin

  • All time favorit of mine is " song to woddy" by Dylan. I have hird many other tribute song to Woody befor.. But Andy has made one of the best, hi is a great artis, and a great song.. hi is no doubt a bleedin legend..

  • never tire a listenin to you andy ya bleedin legend. siamsa

  • @larrycake1981 I never tire of reading your comments larry cake. Mo laochra gaeil

  • @larrycake1981 best and the most moving tune tonight

  • if anyone has a video of My Hearts Tonight in Ireland please post it

  • Please can someone post the chords and a good tuning (6-string guitar) ? I can't pluck, so the best I can hope for is to strum. Any help much appreciated !

  • Ok I bashed at my guitar and a plausible set seem G, C, D7, Am, D. Capo 1 or 2 depending or none if you're Paul Robeson.

  • played in E.try E,A,B,C#m.Bonne chance.

  • Going to see Mr Irvine tonight for first time in Tullamore. Really looking forward to it.

  • Come November in the good old USA "All you fascists are bound to lose."

  • They did, didn't they !

  • I saw Mr Ivine last night in concert and met him afterwards. He even gave me a couple tips for difficult chording. I was honoured to sit with this great storyteller/musician, who is also a sweet and gentle soul. Slainte!

  • What were the tips, share the genius...

  • Slanite Andy!!!

  • As the years roll by, I become more regretfull that I never met this man, when I had the oportunity.

He was and is a free spirit, and by all acounts a wonderful man.

His music will have a "pride of place" in my collection forever!

  • find out what his tour schedule is and go the extra mile to see him. Dunno where you are but he does come to the states...

  • I'm in a little country in the south pacific.

    New Zealand.

Andy toured here in the early '90's.I was in a folk club that hosted him,but refused to meet him after the gig because i believed (at the time) that you should never should meet your heroes. They had a bit of a party afer the show, and Andy charmed everone.I am so sorry now that i missed it!

  • I'm sure he'll come back there. Why don't you email him and find out if there's a tour of Australia/New Zealand in the works.

  • Eh?

    E-mail him!You don't do that!He's a god!.

I would not want to deprive him of a second of his life that could be put to better use!.

It is a mistake Tolkien fans made in the 1960's.They sent him so many letters asking him to write another book that he never had time to write another book! Try E-mailing Bob Dylan and see how far you get!.Before you know it, theres an army of WWF goons on your doorstep accusing you of going through his garbage can(or so I've heard!)lol.

  • What a treasure. I lived in Austin Texas in the early 90s where I saw Mr. Irvine at the Cactus Cafe on the UT campus. In all of my time in that city, teeming with music, Andy Irvine's show ranks up with the best of the show I saw. Never to be forgotten. The song Roul Wallenberg is incredible.

  • Hey Andy hope the trip from Sydney went good for you....Remember a tour with Rens next year and a return to the Blue mountains....

Maybe get a new agent and play in town...

    Never tire of the road.....

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Andy play in the Crane bar in Galway in July 2007 with the Wise Family band and he played this song at the end of the set. It was the best gig I've ever seen. I am hoping that he will make a return appearance at the Edmonton Folk Festival sometime soon.

  • all you faschist's are bound to lose. sorry.

  • sorry bad typing that day, yourè surely right

  • all of you fashists bond to loose!!!!!

saw him last year peforming this song and I can tell, we sang loud enough LOL

Thx for all the music you brought into my live the last 35 years or so

  • Fantastic song - it's obvious he wanted people to join in and sing the famous Woody Guthrie chorus, but it doesn't look like the audience were on the same wavelength. In fact the audience were hardly there (for an audience that f*ckin size)!

  • does anyone know what he's playing. is it an accoustic bass??

  • It's a custom bouzouki, witha guitar based body. Awesome sounding instrument. He talks about it on his website.

  • Seen him twice with Patrick St.Brilliant musicians all!!{shame about the audience on this video}

  • Brilliant!!found this[quite] a while ago,via folk on2,when Jim Lloyd? presented it.[he played a more eclectic selection than the present incumbent!],and thankfully put me on to Patrick St.

  • Great song. The Version with Mozaik is even better...

  • Just got back from a Patrick Street Concert in a small venue in Philadelphia. As usual Andy was great.they did mostly songs from their latest CD, but I was hoping for some of Andy's older classics.I guess I will have to wait til june of 08 when he will be doing a solo tour of the US.When it comes to singing and playing all the instruments he does, no one is even close.

  • i believe he's playing a custom made bazouki that has a jumbo guitar body.

  • Yes, that's a bouzouki. I read that he wanted a deeper sound, and for that the instrument needs a bigger body. The guitar-shape was the most practical.

  • i love this song. saw him in a pub in manhatten 4 years ago. what a genius.

  • Any1 know the chords. Its a realy nice song.

  • Looks like it's in E

  • Andy's contribution to music is immeasurable. Even his obscure albums contain some of the greatest recordings of all time. E.g. "Captain Colston" on Parallel Lines, the album with Dick Gaughan.

At 65, his voice and playing are still fantastic. Don't miss Mozaik (Andy's "supergroup") on their current tour!

  • i saw them on the 20 of septmeber and met and chatted with donal and andy afterwards. they were so nice and didn't mind signing all the stuff i brought along!

  • fantastic performer - nice guy too!

  • Andy Irvine is a model for performance and song writing.

  • Inspirational. Thank you for posting!

  • Andy Irvine, you´re the greatest singer ever!

And furthermore, this song is a jewel for and of the music!

    with greatest appreciation,

    Freddi

  • Brilliant song and preformance...Was this from that BBC show bout 2 years ago? Reviews said he stole the show, but I thought he'd played Ballad of Tom Joad?

    Brilliant, anyways...

  • Hi ssheridan

Yes, this is from the Folk Britannia gigs (organised by Billy Bragg); he played both Tom Joad then this song.

There was a good video of Andy playing Ballad of Tom Joad (in a pub?) on YouTube, but I can't find it now. I recorded the audio onto an mp3; msg me if you want the music.
