This opening shot from the air, and the entire prologue are the absolute best opening of a movie ever! I love it. I love the music, the choreography, everything. IMO, WSS is the best musical ever made. Robbins and Bernstein. Amazing.

I haven't seen the movie in years though I have loved the musical beyond reason. I saw the recent revival and saw the dream ballet sequence when Robbins himself revived it about a decade and a half ago. This opening reminds me how brilliant much of the movie was in spite of Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, Every age deserves its culture. The 1950's got West Side Story, we have Footloose. Alas.

I think all the random dancing looks so much better on the stage because its just them w/no extras. Besides I think that what Bernstein was trying to do was to show that these teens (cuz they are) can't express themselves through words, but they can with actions (the dance fight)

My music class was watching the beginning of this and a little while later I realized how strange it would be to see people dance in real life streets like this randomly, listening to some imaginary music no one else could hear. If I saw this for real, i'd run in the opposite dirrection.
