my best friend was gertie in this very production... she understuddied mabel and got to play the role opposite david sould several times. i had never heard of this musical before i saw it and i have to say, it is one of my faves now. the story and score are simply heartbreaking... i just wish there was somewhere i could see it again. i though this production was brilliant.
Enough of these thin tinny on stage orchestras. Great cast with David Soul and Janie Dee---great casting. Needs a better director who can think fresh and not keep making copies of his other shows. Some day maybe this will be the new hit. I can dream can't I?
I'd still prefer to hear a full theatre orchestra rather than this thin tinny distracting orchestra on stage. Enough !! Love both David Soul and Janie Dee. Great combo. Needed a better director. Thrilling score. What a show. Someday I hope the show will be totally realized and become the "sleeper" hit of the season. I can dream can't I?
I've seen both the John Doyle musicals that made it to Broadway and I pray that MACK AND MABEL does not come here with the actors playing the instruments. PLEASE! The gimmick is over, isn't it? PLEASE!
I saw this Doyle production of Mack & Mabel and LOVED it... thought it was better than his Sweeney Todd! Thought David Soul aws perfect in the role, liked Janie Dee but would have loved to see Anna Jane Casey instead (the Mabel in this video)
That hideous John Doyle at work again, destroying a musical by having actors squawking and grinding and heaving on instruments instead of having a good pit orchestra. I would love to have seen David Soul in a good production.
