The last "dual mode" all-electric loco from the New Haven line to GCT was the EP-5. It ran on the overhead cantenery south until Woodlawn Jct where the Pantographs came down and it's third rail shoes took over. Today, the M2-M4-M6 and soon to come M8 use the same system except they switch to 3rd rail around Pelham. Like the EP5 of years ago, they have DC traction motors and a rectifier to convert the overhead AC to DC. The loco in the vid looks to be a EP4 which worked the same way.
Two levels? What about the secret level that President Roosevelts boxcar connected to the Waldorf Astoria? That interlocking level allowed the armored boxcar containing the presidential limousine to connect to an eleven story elevatory direct to accomodations! The boxcar still resides in the underground yard.
What I was referring to was a History Channel program about the underground secrets of GCS. . Boxcar has unusual car # which doesn't match fleet. FDR traveled in limo in boxcar to GCS where limo drove out on a ramp into elevator to presidential accomodations. No TSA here!
Area is tight security. Car sits on a siding. Strange # indicates now its MNR property...low # indicates it's 1 of 2 special cars ...other car could have been a caboose or something that no longer exists. It should be in a museum as luckily it has avoided vandalism..idle eqpt gets tagged.
And the siding is still down there? Right below the W-A? It seems the new pedestrian walkovers are fairly close (across 51st or 52nd), making the configuration different.
Program showed it at lowest level as a underground yard. The siding was built just to allow offload of limousine to W-A elevator by ramp so to drive the limo up to room floor. You can pay $40 for a tour by Peggy of the closed Brooklyn Bridge IRT Station (or hide on the turn-around in car) but you cannot gain access to the 'Underground Secrets of GCS.' It's a big yard far larger than a football field. GCS and Penn Station were built deep with many layers supported by structural steel.
Peggy is an MTA employee who has run these tours. She has been on the historic train runs. Nobody gets a track walk tour unless certified by SAFETY. Learning to DANCE third rail is part of the job.....not part of the tour.
I'm still trying to figure out how limo was driven in and out as it had to be built as wide as rail pas. car. Answer came from 'WW2 in Color HD': FDRs limo was not an armored behemoth and airplanes became in use. Explains why it was left there.
My second question was that in New Central york Central had electric loco's like the MP using third rail and the one loco found here using both third rail and caternary!!! is their any possible chance that metro north will get any third rail loco or third rail/ caternary loco's in da future!!!!
Lol the definition for "Dual Mode", meaning running on two different power supply and yes MMN do have those type loco's and its the genesis because they can run on both diesel, and electric via third rail. Now im not sure if the loco in the video was a dual mode and just had two types of electric pickup by having a third rail and pantagraph or was just a straight electric loco, but if it was then the genesis would b the same as this loco but without a pantograph.
I'm not too sure about dual mode diesel. It could be easy to create with DC motors. Older subways use two 300VDC series wound motors two per truck wired series for 600 so 2nd pt is two trucks in series and third is parallel. Subway switchers/work are diesel only. Classic Pennsy loco would have been dual mode as I don't remember cat lines into GCT.
OK I HAVE TO QUESTION!!!! ONE IS ABOUT THE TRAIN ROUTE AND THE OTHER IS ABOUT THE LOCOMOTIVE. Aight so we kno in order to get to new haven the train to b traveling on the NEC amtrak line, which was the Pennsylvania Railroad line, now a dayz its own byt metro north, but but my question was line from new rochelle to new haven owned by New york central and The Pennsylvania railroad was using the central's tracks!!!??
At New Rochelle the New Haven tied into the New York Central. That's why you went from overhead caternary to third rail westward, which one still does today, although the entire line is now Metro-North (Amtrak east of New Haven). The line over Hell Gate was the New York Connecting, at one time jointly owned by the PRR and NYNH &H, now owned by Amtrak. It wasn't PRR until you got to Sunnyside.
Selkirk TMO rules big time!!! The transition from third rail to overhead was because Connecticut feared horses getting zapped leading to an extensive 'trolley network.'
Correction the New York Connecting tied in at New Rochelle, the overhead cat is replaced at Pelham by third rail. It is important to note that the type of third rail used on the ex-NYC lines was a rare type of an undershoe pick-up, a novel way to deal with snow and ice common in winter.
@choirboyfromhell1 The 3rd rail used on ex-NYC is the Sprague-Wilgis system. The only other system in North America to use it is the SEPTA Market-Frankford Elevated in Philly.
GCT's Operations Control Center is now all computerized and has integrated all of the former towers including Tower A from this video into 3 work stations. The Upper Level (Twr A) is still a very hard job!!!
The interlocking is some what the same however there have been modifications over the years. Interesting they brought the Clipper in G to 40 that's not a normal move. Metro-North is calling some of the Yankee Baseball trains "Clippers" for nostalgic purposes this fall.
Oh, that was a joy to watch. I used to love it when my dad took me into NYC by train from New Rochelle or (later) Stamford and Monroe CT, and we'd go into that "subterranean world." Thanks to him taking me down to the tracks for train-watching, I'm a railfan to this day, 4 decades later.
The control board for Chattanooga Tenn.'s old station looks similar (but much smaller :)), and is still on display at the museum there, along with other memorabilia and a large model RR layout.
Thanks, guys! Been wanting to do that for a while but never got a reply to stick here. That's from an old New Haven railroad film and one of my continuing favorites!

Actually, that's a GRS interlocking machine.

There's still a separate entrance on the south side of the Waldorf, that one entered from the sidewalk (!)

'Peggy' the IRT station. A bottle of Mad Dog 20-20 get me a track walk tour?? (LOL)
I knew that there was extensive trackwork there, but didn't realize that the siding still existed. Thanks.

True...that was then. MNR has no plans for dual mode locos. NJIT runs MNR tracks and has bi-level cars/control cab car driven by ALPS.
