On this date in 1958 {Mar. 10th} "Lollipop" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} & spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.
Ranked 37th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1958 chart.
Reached #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #6 in the U.K.
Originally recorded by Ronald & Ruby; peaked at #20 {1958}...
Featured in the movies "Crazy Mama", "Eskimo Limon", "Snifshuf Naim", "Stand By Me", "Harrison Bergeron", "Chicken Little", & "Whip It"...
I like that they look a little older and a little plainer than most of the female groups of the 50's and 60's. Almost as if they could be cool moms from your local P.T.A. who decided to form an "act."
If you were alive in or around 1960, this type of music described the feeling of the country as being lighthearted and fun. After President Kennedy was assassinated and the Vietnam War began, things became more grim and pessimistic; especially most of the music of that era.
This is an amazing good peace of singing, and a cachy on aswell, reminds me om the beginning of "planet 51" and also it is in a lot of commercials in denmark :)
In the not too distant past, women (and men) dressed classy and at least tried to project a decent image of themselves. Thank you for posting this smart video.
@auggiej1 most of them were dark haired apart from the one second in on the left!!!! its hard to tell in black and white!!! :L hahaha but in those days it was about class, elegance, sultry and talent!!!! not really about looking attractive!!! you must remember though, in their days this was stunning!! Plus both men and women loved them because it showed women become something other then a stereotypical house wife. Men loved it because it brought around a new "SEXY" in a way! :D xxxx
Mr. Pop is Andy Williams.
