While painting your caliper's red isnt as cool as installing a set of brembos I dont think painting them red is rice at all. Maybe you'd prefer black paint so they dont stick out as much but "Rice" ? NAH!

Why didn't he apply the black high temperature grease between the brake pads and shims instead???

yeah that should add atleast 5hp... the thing about this up grade is you can rice it out later with red paint if you wish.
