At least you didn't hurt the little critter too much.
You could have just grabbed the tail, wear a leather glove if you are worried about bites. They don't carry
rabies or any bad stuff. They look all fierce and everything but it is mostly just for show. If it is a female she will quit fussing if you hold the back of her neck.
