Chef John I made this on Monday for my family when I was visting home. My family loveddd it :D
this was my first casserole and it tasted DELICIOUS I also did the "easy turkey" recipe. thank you so much for this easy things a weirdo like me can actually cook ^^
Made this for Turkey day along w sweet potato casserole. Made the white sauce gluten free. We haven't had green bean casserole in years as we are a gluten free/celiac family. Was a bit of work, but worth it. Thanks so much for your yumminessness!!
Alright, so I tried this recipe and it was amazing. "We" got rave reviews from everyone. The only thing I added was caramelized button mushrooms. Thanks, again.
@salahhe you can get very creative with it... use bacon, thin slices of grilled chicken / beef... and then... no more crying... and more meat eating hahahahahhaha
Dear Chef John, I have decided to make this a "Chef John" Thanksgiving. My husband was floored by this green bean casserole! The whole family loved it! Thank you letting the world know that REAL green bean casserole could be so good!
@oldwhatshisface sure, but there must be others then the typically turkey and mashed sweet potatoes... i did it 5 hours ago just for myself and it tasted really good with a nice steak
holy toledo...i just got done making this and the butternut squash mascarpone gnocchi for an office thanksgiving luncheon tomorrow...they will be so impressed..but i'm exhausted...thanks chef john!
I just made this. Except, I had no green beans so I used....peas....uhh yeah. And I had none of that cheese..but I did have mozarella. And I added garlic to the sauce. I'm a college student so I have to make some cheese sacrifices.
Maybe it was someone's birthday, and they didn't like cake.... So, someone decided to make them this for their birthday.... They write "Happy Birthday Blah Blah Blah" on it with the bread crumbs and cheese. That might be why someone would spread it unevenly... It doesn't make too much sense..... But possible...

I guess it's just me....this guy sounds so condescending...it's ridiculous! Hey people, this is a knife and this is an onion. If you can be careful, you can actually cut the onion with the knife! Amazing! If you heat butter with an equal part flour...you create a roux. Say it with me people...sounds like Roo. Am I alone hear? This guy is simply irritating!
@Powerslave1123 First up...don't tell me what to fucking do! I love cooking and trying new recipes but this guy is condescending as hell. But if I want to watch him or make fun of him that's none of your business, is it?
@DickLodge68 Fine, if you want to insult Chef John, I won't stop you. By the same token, you won't stop me from insulting you. You have the nerve to get butthurt from a witty joke made by a youtube chef, and you expect people to agree with you? This channel is for people who like chef john and who want to watch his videos - NOT for people who only want to bitch about him hurting their feelings. So, as I said before, you should simply go away, because you obviously fall into the latter category.
@Powerslave1123 I'm insulting him by saying he talks to you like a child? Whhhaa? My butthurt from a witty joke? Again Whhaaat? There is no witty joke, this guy is so condescending and then you get mad at me for pointing out the obvious? I should go away? You must be some ultra-liberal moron that if no one agrees with you they should shut up...but then bitch about "free speech". You can insult me all you want but have a reason for doing so.
@DickLodge68 lmao idk what the hell you're on about, my only point is that if you don't like his videos you shouldn't watch them - i didn't say anything about the bill of rights, you nut xD
sounds like these ingredients will cost me a lot. I have a funny feeling that unless I'm eating all organic all day everyday I'm not going to reap any noticeable benefits...
I made this recipe yesterday and it came out AMAZING! On your blog you recommend sherry vinegar but since I didn't have any I poured a splash of dry white wine onto the onions and it was divine. The whole recipe was heavenly. Thanks so much, from me and from the lunch guests I hosted.
OK, OK, OK...lol...I bent. I tried this...yes, I smothered my veggies. And I have to say - WINNER! I still think veggies need to be served whole and untouched sometimes, but this is REALLY GOOD! hahaha.

I want to make this for Thanksgiving, but too bad it's been set for ages who brings what for Thanksgiving! Oh well, I'll try this out at home though for sure!!
Ohh this looks delicious! But I was wondering, is the cayenne pepper going to make the casserole a little spicy? Even a tiny bit? I'm planning on making this for some little kids and they can't handle spicy at all. :<
@PixilatedPocky just use less of it, but tbh, a little spicy has never hurt a child, that's just an urban legend. some people think garlic is even more than a child can handle, pffff
Just wondering, is the stove top the only way to get onions to caramelize like that? Since maybe I'm just a bad cook, since the only way I can cook onions is by almost burning them, and throwing in some broth before it does :x
Chef John, Where I live Gruyère cheese is about 15 dollars per lb. Do you know of a similar substitute? I needed some Gruyère for a recipe for Scalloped onions, but saw the price and decided to wait. :)
@robotzim its called sarcasm. if youre biased enough to think all Americans are conceited, naive, and arrogant then you probably arent any better of a person than all of us conceited, naive, and arrogant people. So maybe just dont watch our videos.

@thefelinepunk I think the no was just a joke man. try whatever you want, it's weird to ask him "can I do..." he's not your mom, you can try whatever the heck you want in your kitchen (even spreading unevenly) and even if he would say it doesnt taste good, maybe you disagree? so go for it and tell us how it tasted please!
This spring, I made a green bean casserole based on your cream of mushroom soup, and it turned out fantastic. I'm gonna try to convince my friend to make this for Thanksgiving. Otherwise, I'll make it!
How would one use frozen green beans and not have it come out soggy?--fresh not available here. Btw--in DK, green beans are only/always frozen whole--never cut, never 'frenched'. If the veggies come from Germany, they have not so tasteful flare for advertizing, the veggies on the package are GIANT. Peas for example are bigger than cherry tomatoes. So funny!
"Why would you spreadit unevenly?'-So you can have all the topping and no one else does....;-)

Please consider the vegan diet, the noble way of living.
To make this recipe environmentally friendly, cruelty free, and healthy use:
-local and organic ingredients
-vegan earth balance buttery spread (contains no hydrogenated oil)
-vegan cheese (Daiya, Vegan Gourmet, raw vegan cheese homemade or a brand such as Dr. Cow Tree Nut Cheese)

So funny!

I love carmelized onions. They go with anything, especially cheese. Love this recipe, trying it out soon. :)
