StarCraft: How to do a split

hey guys I need some help in starcraft. lately ive played zerg, but i used to play protoss. anyway I just cant beat a computer enemy. I spawn about 10 drones total for resources, have 1 or 2 on vespene, and the rest on mineral. so then I build a spawning pool, and build like a dozen zerglings and an overlord or two. then I build a hydralisk den. Then I build a few hydralisks. then my enemies send in 20 firebats and kill everything. I can't win. please help.

@bigabs18281 Sending workers to a single mineral patch is inefficient because each worker will wait its turn on the first patch, mine, return, THEN choose its own patch. By splitting you get optimal mining time. Actually makes a pretty big difference in your timing for your first rax/depot.

@crazedwhitegamer you start with 4 workers but one mineral patch can only be mined by 2 workers. Because of this, the other 2 workers will have to wait until the first 2 finish. This delays time so we need to spilt the workers up to have all 4 of them mining instead of 2

What I use to do is take all four make them mine on a mineral select two before they reach it and make them go on a different one and the pairs split on their own and you get a PERFECT split, this split sucks.

That's not the correct way to train, because if you start a single player custom map, the speed of the game wont be at max.

meh... this is a bad video tbh. i mean sure it works but cloning yourworkers is not a good idea. its much better to just select them all, send them to a mineral, then select 2 and send to another, then just split up those 2 groups. with practice its very easy.

yeah i never really tried the shift trick. i usually send the all to one and then grab 3 to the next and 2 to the next and the last to the next.

It's a bit of an overrated trick, really. You'll have the same amount of minerals 1-2 seconds later, tops. But everything that can be improved easily, should :)

@killler3000ex Most people who are fast enough will use clicks rather than cloning. Cloning to start your miners is actually a bad idea. See how his miners are busy running back and forth as he clones them? Clicking can lead all the workers to the proper minerals at once. But only if you're fast enough as I said.

however, if you have the rallye point at the crystals that doesn't help, because you still have to give the harvest order... otherwise they simply move to the minerals and just stand there doing nothing.

@Herbarius it helps though, cuz then the worker auto moves closer to the patch when its created, so it doesnt have to start moving after you give the command

Yes thanks, I figured that out since I wrote that comment, it's quite a while back ;)

However, I prefer not to set the rallye point directly onto the minerals but like half the way (or little more than half) towards them, so they start moving before I click them and give the harvest command, but should I miss them for some reason I won't think (at a quick glance) they're harvesting, but immediately know something's not right.

It's when you split your workers in the beginning (Not in Fastest map or anything related) so you get like a 15 or 50 mineral advantage for 15 seconds or something.

With that extra 50, you can get a faster start on barracks, spawning pool, gateway, etc. Or whatever the heck you wanna make.

If you're really a newbie, practice things that will have a more significant impact on your game. Honestly, 1 hour a day splitting is way too long. Try 5 minutes.

You're talking about MBS there (multi-building selection), its not possible to put more than 1 building on one hot key, but it will in Starcraft2.
