It was rumored that the 1991-1993 models had the defective 4.2L V8 and 3.5L V6 TURBO DIESEL had a defect that caused the timing belts on those engines to fail before the car hit 100K
A Mercedes-Benz never ever had a timing belt, so it;s very unlikely that it could have caused any problems :-) Also, the 3.5 liter diesel was not a V6, it was an inline-six cylinder engine. And it wasn't the best they made, it's true. It struggled with the heavy car and had cylinder-head problems.
When Launched this was the best car in the world. IMHO v8 models were the best. The six cyl cars were underpowered & the v12 was over complicated and prone to niggling faults, all great though! This was the last benz that was built to a standard,not to a budget.
This car was a tank. You still see 20 and 30 year old Mercedes here.. in canada where we have extreme weather have very little rust, runs well - nothing like the plastic fantastic sell out Americanized garbage Mercedes is peddling these days...
one very important thing,the Diana´s car was a mercedes-benz S-class 280.
the only survivor of this tragic and misterious car crash,is the bodyguard Trevor Ree Jones.the others ocuppants including Diana,Dody All-Faied,and the driver are dead.
@chikalica You are leaving something out, Diana, Dodi and the bodyguard all were NOT wearing their seatbelts, you can roll in the world's safest car but without being buckled in it can only do so much to save you.

my dad and I both own this car... and I must say... it's my favorite Mercedes.
I don't really care for the newer models. :P
they're way too Americanized.

Mercedes Motors use camshaft driving chains.
And the 3,5 wasn't a V6 its an R6 (OM603)

I had a 97' S-Class a few years ago..
A lot of people thought it was a brand new Mercedes. It's a true luxury sedan with the heart of a sports car.
