"Det är kärlekens charme (The glory of love)"; Music by Billy Hill, Lyrics by S. S. Wilson; Odeon Orchestra - last published on CD "Zarah Leander: Det bästa...", EAN 7391826909527
Zarah...the Golden combination of Greta Garbo's cold and steal tendernes, with the extra chic vocal performance of Jannete McDonald...tell me if I am wrong!?
I've followed the discussion regarding the, shall we say, "innocence" of Zarah. I do think it's over-rated.
She had a great voice, no doubt about it. I'd compare her to Vera Lynn(propaganda-wise). Problem is, the the latter isn't professional enough as a singer. And, Sarah could perform. My grand-parents were communists, but they still respected her.
I'm pretty sure she was simply a singer and "sang for the wrong side". She was no more a nazi than she was a Communist agent, as was alleged about her as well.
By the way, what are the titles (in both English and Swedish) of the songs she is singing here ?
Karl Gerhard was the swedish Noël Coward and his shows in Stockholm were superb! I have heard swedish recordings and they are amazing! Gerhard also helped Zarah to a comeback in Sweden after the second world war, since Sweden didn't want to see Zarah again since she had performed for the nazist in Germany. After 5 years she was forgiven! 5 difficult years and two times she tried to commit suicide. During 1950-1979 she was a star in Sweden again! Our last diva!
That story, stockholmboy29, reminds me of a friend of mine who never spoke to the postman again, after he delivered a telegram from the War Office saying that his son had been killed in action in WW1. What an odd way to punish Zarah, for simply singing to the audiences she had been entertaining long before the outbreak of WWII. She was no Nazi.
I agree... I think that (although many loved her in Sweden) she always had it against her, that she performed for the nazi's in Germany... But I think it's a bigger question. Before the 2nd ww. Sweden and Germany were very close and german was the first second language swedish children learned in school (before english). That stopped after ww and I think Sweden was so disapointed on a nation they had admired before...
What a pleasure it is, stockholmboy29, to talk to a non-partisan, sensible, interpreter of history; all of what you say being utterly correct. Zarah was a Swedish German-speaker;
hence her erstwhile decision to make a career for herself in the then most advanced country in Europe. That she carried on was logical progression; she being an entertainer and not a political pundit or Nazi disciple.
It's worth wondering, stockholmboy29, what her critics, then and now - and hindsight - would have made of her, had Germany won the war ? To me she transcends all that, and is simply an entertainer with a big heart, whose misplaced magnanimity was capitalised-on by the victors as the fairly-won spoils of war.
yurek46pink: I´ll try to answer: the footage is from the swedish movie "Äktenskapsleken" from 1935 Zarah`s third and last swedish movie, and the first song is a grammophonerecording from 7/8 1936. The last song I know nothing of, never heard it before.
