  • whats the notes?

  • @3mot30 hornexcerpts . org

  • 0:11 wow man stop draggin go with the music. Too slow and you are holding the notes too long. Horrible at 0:47 you rushed that like crazy! 1:31 damm out of tune. VERY VERY sharp. last note was sharp and you blasted it, too sharp. I know it's hard but just get it right and breath at the right moments.

  • @LordWingDeath and you are to judge him because you are....?

  • @LordWingDeath Oh, so the band is the soloist now? That's his interpretation so stop judging him and criticizing him.. Do it yourself if you're really that good. Better be a good one though, don't make yourself a laughing stock.

  • HA....I am a percussionist and I even know that when you are back stage you HAVE to play on the sharp side so when the sound TRAVELS to the audience or the stage you will be in tune with the orchestra. ITS A HORN CALL , IT SHOULD BE DIRTY AND NASTY AND SOUND LIKE ITS COMING FROM A FREAKEN MOUNTAIN 50 miles away !!!

  • too many breaths in the wrong places Annamia Eriksson plays it much better

  • @blackhawk917 Annamia Eriksson played in a church for god's sake.. The acoustics are different. The resonance created by the hall covers up all the gaps.

  • @blackhawk917

    different situation dude!

Pizka plays it at opera, Annamia in a church for a recording ;-)

  • i wish i could play that good lol :)

  • @emosadoreme I know me too!

  • Fantastic!

  • oh god you can hear fafner waking up at the end....

  • naja,wer es braucht.....

  • nice job

  • I know where to find the sheet music if you want it! Just message me!

  • Hey Siegfried, wake up man !

  • very good

  • Ammazzati!!

  • whare can u get the sheet music for this piece???????? because i play f horn and i want to learn it

  • Please pm me :)

  • google hornexcerpts, it's on the first site.

  • The noise does not sound at all like condensation but more the mic or something like that. As to the other comment about a dead sound, that is the space in which he is playing. The well known "superwoman" video is in a very live space. They are both fine players!

  • Prof. Hans Pizka already have around 150 Live Recordings of this piece. He is surely more proficient in it.. You should listen him play on his Vienna Horn.. He's really the hornfellow to the world

  • umm can someone clear this for me was that the camera or background noise or did he have to empty his 'condesation' out of the horn? some pretty good high notes

  • I don't know if it's just the camera or the mic but his sound is really dead in this video.

  • Uh boy, you perfectionist's out there. We should all be so blessed with your insights and criticisms. I just love listening to horns other than the sax, which I've played for 36 years now.

Geez, I just appreciate all the talent out there that let their horns speak for themselves.

  • Well spoken!

  • all depends on what mics and preamps it was recorded with

  • Has anyone of you the haters on here even heard my dad play live? Get a grip! I seriously doubt that any of you can do what he does with a horn.

  • this is a copy of the original clip which was in tune.

he is standing between two curtains.

  • The sound sounds really muffled and dead, it must be the video, because I have heard him play this before and it sounded 10 times better than this.

  • its the room, im sure. theres a reason why he has performed this call more than anyone else.

  • well played sir......

  • That is amazing, the acoustics make the girl sound better, but thats just the room

  • beautiful, crisp, clear high C!

  • bad acoustics, but he needs to open his hand at the bell and change the tuning, its why his high notes are sharp and it sounds muffled, just sit down for about ten minutes and retune it so the balance is better, then u can start playing around with ur right hand altho ur lips should do all the work anyway

  • she is still better

  • Are you sure it isn't the acoustics of the room?

  • yes i'm pretty sure she was better at staying in the middle of the notes and she also played with a fuller sound and that did not have anything with the room

  • acoustics.

  • NIEN! It wasn't the acoustics freak. Ya that's right I called you a freak. I so went there.

  • im not saying she's is a bad player, she's still amazing.

I'm just saying that acoustics helped her.

  • Yes, the acoustics did help her, but you could tell by the tuning, dynamics, and acuracy that SHE WAS IN FACT BETTER.

  • @filipehutchens

You are a total moron. You obviously have no performance experience whatsoever and wouldn't know a good live performance if your life depended on it. I would put money on the fact that you will never come close to doing anything worthwhile in your life... so have fun putting your little comments up on youtube. Yeah, I went there.

  • I don't know what the guy below me is talking about.

It seems to me that is a perfectly good and valid performance.

You can all judge for yourself.

  • hmmm, well I must say I am unimpressed, his intonation is all over the place. For example His high G's are all very sharp. The middle section is ok. However when he comes back to the call towards the end you hear his articulation get messy and inconsistant. He barely gets the high notes out at the end and the tone is not consistent with his tone in his middle register. Overall it's ok but in my opinion nothing to praise at all.

  • It's too bad you wrote all your posts before the "Audio Preview" feature was enacted. Next time you post, try taking a listen first to see if what you're saying sounds the way you think it does in your head. Thank you.

  • Cause she is playing in a empty room which creates the echo sound affect. Doesn't mean that she is the best horn player of them all.

  • A couple commenters are noting how much 'better' the woman sounds. A huuuuge difference is that she is playing in a reverb chamber and here, Pizka is back stage (dry acoustic) for a live opera performance. Of course she 'sounds' better. Many people with even terrible voices will sing in the shower too. Also, it sounds like the mike is right behind the bell, so you hear even before it hits a wall. The horn's bell faces back for a reason. Only the second horn usually hears right out of the bell.

  • @eliseannville That's what I thought. This performance sounded dulled compared to Eriksson's. The acoustics can't be too good.

  • DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY TIPS OR ANYTHIGN TO PLAY THIS SONG OR WHEERRE TO START WHEN PLAYING ..thanks

  • Tip number 1: It's not a song.

  • well that wasnt even me saying that...my friend was on my account when i saw it i didnt even know why she asked it but anyway thanks for that very "helpful" tip? i can already play the call she was just a dummy, so thanks

  • @Othello1019 yes it is a PIECE lol

  • Well done Hans.

As for those who think this isn't well done, I suggest you get the job Hans has and see if you can play as consistently over so many performances.

  • At the end of the first phrase, or rather, the first fermata (or, so you can understand, the little dot with the half circle over the note) where she goes up a major fourth, the pitch creeps sharper and sharper. There, right at the beginning, she had intonation problems already. How can you argue that her intonation is better if she can't even sustain a pitch? I agree, it sounds pretty in that big hall, but that's about it. I have nothing to know about horn playing, I don't even fucking play it.

  • Do you honestly think that the intonation on the other video - which you claim is awesome- is better? You're right, this is very fun.

  • If you don't care what anyone thinks, shut up and stop defaming every individual who responds to you.

Go do something productive; ear training would be great.

  • right... good luck with those auditions of yours- just remember, they are live- so you don't have 30 takes. Make sure to apply for some back-up schools...you'll need it, most schools don't major in "how to be an ass bag".

  • yeah.. she sounds great- We all sound great when you take as many takes as you want.

  • Dude... this was taken on a camera recorder. I'm sure his horrible tone and atrocious pitch is what won him his many jobs over his career. Anyone with half a brain would know not to judge a persons tone on that. Someday somebody will post a vid of you on youtube with a shitty recorder and a bunch of no-name wannabes will slam you for your crappy tone. Well, probably not... that vid wont have very many views.

  • Dude, you're 18.... Unless you're studying with someone like Dale Clevenger and you're a prodigy, I SERIOUSLY doubt you can play this better than Hans Pitza. Sure, he's famous and successful and probably has an ego, but until I see a video of you up there pasting his version of that piece into oblivion, you can just shut up and stop bragging.

Back it up if you're going to gloat. Otherwise, shut up.

  • Heheh... you are lame. Anyone can "audition" for those schools. You don't have any say about anything until you've actually done something- which I would put money on the fact that you have NOT. So you will remain a douche. end of story.

  • I don't care who is behind the horn. Everyone has bad days, and this sound is too open and brassy for my tastes.

  • Jr. High??? I though so. You're a little punk with a lot a attitude. There is no way that you can compare yourself to Hans Pizka. How stupid of you to judge him from you tube quality recordings. Very stupid little boy.

  • Sound??? This is you tube remember? Mr. Pizka is one of the finest players on Earth so when sound quality is questioned, remember the room, mic position, direction, etc. and use your imagination to fill in the obvious blanks.

  • the sound is very open but is good.

  • are you crazy??? This is HANS PIZKA!!

  • no emotion man.. and your tonguing is too heavy on the longer notes.

  • Must be a newbee. Hans Pizka is Austrian, a prodigal genius on the horn and knows proper tonguing of this piece better than anyone alive. Search here and listen to him play this on the vienna horn.

  • This guy is really good. But I think that the girl (I forget her name) playing in that hall (somwhere in Sweden) is somewhat better. It may be the location, as this place does seem somewhat "dry". He has exceptional technique though

  • You're annoying.

  • Arguing on the internet is like the Special Olympics: Even if you win, you're still a RETARD.

  • superb!

  • dear dcikid09,

Id like to see your video response...try to top hans pizka in the real world...

  • Let´s reverse it. I would love to watch the first live video from YOUR first performance of this solo in a real performance in any opera house under real back stage circumstances, just an amateur video recorded by some stage assistant ????? Take care kid09 ! Do not hit your nose, carried so high up !

  • First I did not post this video. Let´s talk about you again at age 60+, how you play then ! Anyway, good luck for your career !

  • Kid, I wish yóu play that solo in such special circúmstances back stage, beamers ass-grilling,people around, noise, walk back & forth,excitement- I promise you shit your pants full first time. You arrive last run out of breath playing REALLY LOUD, not minipractiseroom, but a theatre (2300seat). just live, was back stage. - Mrs.E. played nice Call, really live? or playback? L.C. in the performance is just one time chance. There was no extra mic, but cameramic.

  • dci kid , explains it all DCI i guess you must be perfect your self to do DCI lol. make a vid of your self playing this !! you are prob the type of person who goes to see the ny phill and says ,did you hear that out of tune f# in the woodwinds..oo my god i should complain !! ...haha but then again you could be some god on horn but i dont think so . you are prob just as bad as i am on horn lol. CASE CLOSED

  • haha you bum, this man is a legend of horn players. do you have any idea who you are talking about . lets see you play this . sharp , shut up , they tunre higher in euro orchestras anyways

  • Good job

  • i play horn in high school to and and i totally agree with u the girl would blow him out the water she is amazing, but he is better than me, im a first year begginner

  • The problem is not his playing but poor recording quality and positioning. It does not do him justice or accurately represent the true sound. With the bell facing the mic it's also causing bad feedback.

  • ...and finally, you mention the Swedish woman who plays it as an example of how it should be played. Yes, that is an exceptionally good example of how it can be played, but there are some things to keep in mind that are to her benefit and to Pizka's detriment: she's being recorded by high quality equipment (rather than a consumer video camera), she's playing in a highly resonant space (something that the Hans's video camera can't reproduce), and her bell is faced away from the mic.

  • Where there may be some small problems with his playing in this, this *is* a live performance, and in a solo of such length, minor technical problems are to be expected -- such as a note slightly out of tune here or there. You call it unmusical? The phrasing is well balanced and very expressive... how is this unmusical? (cont'd)

  • What you call a bad tone is clearly a matter or personal opinion. It would be a good idea to try to get the experience of sitting in the bell of a professional to know the sort of sound we produce from less than 10 feet. It can sound quite ugly up close when we're playing forte. Further, where his tone concept may be more edgy than most Americans might be comfortable with, it is much more common among Germanic hornists.

  • No accounting for others' tastes, but I'd really like to hear you back this up. I'm not saying he's the best hornist in the world, but I think he has a good tone, I am mystified by your charge that he is playing unmusically, and given the harmonic context, he is playing in tune. You can play it better? Great: prove it. I think I can speak for the rest of the horn playing community in saying that if you can play it better, I'd love to hear it.

  • wow. that is incredible!!!

  • ur mustache makes it look like you are playing on a reed instrument. But other than that, ABSOLUTLEY INCREDIBLE!!!!!

  • incredible musician...these calls are just phenenmonal.

  • breath!!!!!!!

  • manthan man can play i really really really wish i could play like that; but he sure has a lot of water in there should have dumped it out before he started.

  • He sounds like he has water in there...or is it just my computer?

    Bravo for Hanz!

    -Go F Horn players! XD

  • Hans has a very nice recording of the Stauss #2 out there on a single Vienna horn. Try that : )

Hans Pizka has a great website were you can hear a lot and learn a lot..then order his recordings (Is the check in the mail yet Hans?)

  • I wish I could play that on my horn =)

  • i think that was a rehearsal and someone was filming himself. he deserves to be proud of himself if he can play siegfrieds horn call so i doubt he was being cocky at the end with the thumbs up or whatever...but male french hornists do tend to be cocky...

  • Why do you think, it was a rehearsal ? After act 1 in the pit we change to plain cloth, as we leave the theatre after the solo is over. The stage conductor filmed the Long Call using my camera as I asked him. So he was busy & could not disturb me while I was playing.

  • that answers all the questions i asked....

  • I think it was pretty goo. The quality of the video didn't help, but he did it great .

  • He does have tenure!

  • I doubt Pizka posted this "response" himself. He's first horn with the Bayerische Staatsoper - he doesn't have to prove himself. Does anyone know if this is Bayreuth? He's in street clothes, so it's either there or it's a dress rehearsal in Munich or elsewhere. (If it were a live performance anywhere but Bayreuth, he'd be in a tux even behind the curtain, as he'd have to go back out and rejoin the orchestra after his offstage solo.)

  • Sorry, to oppose you. The soloist of the Long Call does NOT go back to the pit in the bigger opera houses, because his alternating co-principal has taken over act 2 & 3. Nor do the play wearing a tuxedo in Bayreuth. The other big orchestras perform in long tail (frack) except Vienna (opera).

  • that's not his sound. the sound quality of this video is not accurate. the camera mike is not suited for the sound of the horn. I want a pizka double vienna horn so badly!!!

  • Very nice! I attempted this on the trombone, but it's just not suitable. Harmonics are too far apart. :P

  • They are far apart on the horn as well, we just get over that little problem though.

  • First, not all of the playing is completely up to him. He has to follow someone on stage pretending to play an animal horn. He has to follow the acting. Second, playing into a heavy stage curtain will almost always make you sound stuffy. Third, the sound of the horn backstage isn't the same as what you hear in the audience.

  • We should sit and practice instead of being wasting our time writing what we think about other people's playing!

  • lol I agree, but resting and studying the sounds isn't all bad.

  • All this silly criticism. This was recorded during a live performance. No editing, no second chances. Of course he is happy with the results. How many critics have performed this even once during the opera? And what does a saxophonist know about playing the long call offstage during Siegfried? The horn and sax are completely different animals.

  • Nice Mr. Pizka...should have known you couldn't resist posting this! What is with the weird ringing overtones/resultant tones? Must be something on the stage vibrating....

  • Sorry , I did not post it. Someone stoleit from my homepage & loaded it up.

  • Something sounds wronge bout it! I think you should try to play louder

  • lol did u see how red his face got at the end, but i can understand why lol i play f horn

  • it sounds too muffled

  • The camera is too close to the bell...

  • There is no more space behind stage

  • It's good except for some intonation issues like his high G in the opening statement. Other than that it's very good.

  • poor....

  • what?! its hans pizka!

  • GOOD SHOW PIZKA! But where's the Vienna horn?

  • funny because he's actually playing a Hans Pizka horn.

  • Why is that funny?
