@AsherAshlag couldnt have said it better myself. I was really hoping she'd pick one of the Bach partitas, something to show off the bright sound and dexterity of the violin
@grab it's not the price tag. The sound is amazing. It's her bad choice of music. Really bad. If you want to show off a Strad or Guarnerius, Gershwin is a bad way to do that. This was just beyond me when I saw it first on TV. I would have told her you play Bach or find another TV show.
disgusting...if u choose a jazz piece - go on and improvise over the harmony, it`s not enough to play the melody...that`s what Kenny G does, that is why he is not a jazz musician.
@firedeathterror999 finding that 1 in a million bow blank and having a master actually make his best bow from that one in a million blank. Getting a good bow is a much more 'random' phenomena than a good violin. Also a bow must be found that sounds well with that specific instrument.
yuck, poor fiddle. Seems like this is more a story about a mediocre violinist being overly privileged :/ I do appreciate the effort on her part to do something different.. but she obviously has no taste.
... um, any violinist above a complete beginner level can play double-stops and make the instrument have two voices and do trills and vibrato, she played an extremely simple song that didnt show off the increadable voice of a stradivarious, and also the microphone(s) used were definately not made for musical audio recordings
So many people commenting on this are so ignorant and uncultured. She didn't buy the instrument off. It is on loan to her (but it costs 3.6 million if you were to buy it). The room she is playing in has poor acoustics and she played a piece buy Gershwin (arranged by Heifetz) that doesn't exactly show what the violin can do. Look at some of her other recordings.
I find it hard to believe that with modern technology, a company hasn't bought a Stradivarius violin and analyzed it to replicate its exact structure.
They say its because the earth was colder back then and trees grew slower and MORE DENSE causing the wood to produce perfect sound when used in a violin
At least thats what i read...
Dense wood = strat
Cold climate growing trees = slow growth dense wood

if I had 3.6 million dollars to 'throw to the wind' I'd buy it immediately of course as I think it is the best sounding violin I've heard so far :) LOL
for those who say it sounds 'just ok' I think you don't know how to tell what a good violin sounds like...this is a GREAT sounding violin....I still think it's a 'wallop' amount of money to pay for it of course, to me anyway, I'm a person who does not have the money to pay for my weekly grocery shopping! so I struggle to think what it is like to pay that much for a violin LOL
she plays well, but... maybe it's just i was expecting too much but it sounded like just a good violin, not what i'd think a Stradivarius would sound like
Can someone please explain precisely what the difference is in sound between a normal one, and one of these? It might just be I don't have a proper ear for music... But yeah, please?
@pranzmeister It's hard to explain with words really. You really simply have to hear both side by side for the best explanation, and even still, it's widely up to personal preference, although strads are widely accepted for having an exquisite sound.
This "expert" failed to answer WHY EXACTLY such violins produce such a sound. On the other hand, her playing is so sublimely beautiful I'm almost prepared to forgive her :)
I was excited to hear it until she said the name of the song she was gonna play. she couldnt pick bach? something to show more of a full range? I was playing that in my third year of learning violin. Im sure shes a great violinist but I just feel if youre going to play something for people who dont play violin you want to play something without slide notes and flats written in the music that only violinist would understand.
of all the great violinists that own similar instruments, they picked one that sounds like a 10 year old to be on national tv. great representation ...

We go from rednecks beating a protester to the ground to an overly filthy rich lady buying a 3.6 million dollar violin and a 200k bow....while people are starving in the streets, the government and msm is completely hijacked, and my personal beef---hurt at work and not worth the corporation's money to help me continue to be able to work, surely it wouldnt have even cost as much as her fucking bow to help me....sickning

Violins are the instrument closest to the timbre of the human voice.
And yes, it takes some knowledge and practice to know if you're hearing a good instrument.
If you didn't know what makes a Ferrari run, could you still appreciate the sounds it makes going down the road?
