I don't know. I don't mind whether they are Persian or not but I feeled them to be very Persian because of their manners and their biological traits. But it is not so important to me.
They are related to others only by language or by some culture, but not by ethnically. Uyghur and east of central Asia were part of China 1500 years ago. Turks were barbarian nomad and biggest enemy of China then. Chinese allied with Persian to defeat Turks. No, the first attested appearance of "Turks" was near Mongolia, after which they spread throughout Central Asia.
Then, in the Middle Ages most Turkic tribes converted to Islam and became heavily influenced by Persian and Arab culture.
That's the biggest reason for the similarities between the Turks, "Ariyans" ( I assume you mean Iranians & co. ), and Middle Eastern peoples.
( Then again, all modern humans have a common ancestor in Africa -,- )

The hisoty by the Chinese is twisted, Uyghur wiriter are not allowed to write what has really happened in the past. It makes it diffucult to find out about Uyghur history. But our language and appearance and our culture are the live information and proof of Uyghur civilization. That is why Chinese government has been turning uyghur schools into Chinese schools to let Uyghurs forget their lang, culture. The Chinese regime also transferring Uyghur girls from countryside by force to inner china.

Sadly every source I find does only talk about very early times and how uyghur and huns are connected, after that its pretty dark.

Great Dance and Music and also interesting historical talk here. I am a historical reenactor and because of my looks (I am part japanese, with more western traits that is) I was asked to reenact a culture around the silk road. I found uyghur to be the most interesting.

you don't have to apologise, piroozz! I'll explain myself. Uigurs have Tocharian ancestry. But Sogdians are also Indo-European. Without Sogdian influence Uigur culture would be much like other Altaic. Uigurs are not Persian, but they co-existed and naturally mixed with Sogdians during the Uigur Empire and later. Subject to that historical fact is cultural and physical resemblance as piroozz puts it. Some Uigurs look quite Persian to me too, others are more Altaic/Mongoloid looking.

I also have to say that the appearence of the uighurs varies as the development of a human being with two way DNA is always different e.g a uighur might inherit the eyes and nose of the east asian heritage which would make him look like more "mongoloid" BUT he would also inherit the rest 60% of his european heritage in of the parts of the body, or other way round...

Have you ever heard of Pazyryk people? Their graves were excavated by Russian archeologists in the Altai mountains 'near the borders of China, Kazakhstan and Mongolia'. The graves are 'comparable to the earlier Tarim mummies', aka the Tocharian graves. One was found only 600 miles from Turpan and it dates back 2,500 years. What is more, the DNA studies of the mummies showed that they were Caucasian people. The Uigurs might have been a mixed race before they left Altai.

The fair complexion of the Uigurs certainly hails from Tocharians, Persians are not the fairest. I have met quite blond Uigurs and with blue eyes. It is true, though, that the Tocharian ancestry of the Uigurs goes back long before the Uigur Empire. The 60% of European DNA is quite significant and couldn't have been the result of a one-time encounter of the Uigurs with the Tocharians. I am proud to be Uigur - the unique blend of Europe and Turkic Asia.

Tilivay is right mostly.
They are related to others only by language or by some culture, but not by ethnically. They are more Tocharian by DNA, up to 80% indo-european DNA have found(40% west european),an unique indo-european people much related to ancient Celts who lost their true identity and native language by assimilation. There are full evidence online if you have patience.

chinese never allied with Persia to defeat Uigurs. When nations come into contact, thier culturs get impacted accordignly. You have to do your history lesson better. Uigurs have a rich culture that goes centuries back. As it has been noticed here already, chinese always stayed on the other side of thier wall. Uigurs have sogdian heritage as is obvious from Uigur vocabulary, cuisine, music, architecture and their appearnces, too. I am Uigur but people take me for a Persian because of my looks.

Why are there so many terrible comments on this page? I grew up in Beijing. I remember my mother telling me about her trips to Xin Jiang, and about the wonderful Uyghur culture. I came to check up on some Uyghur music, and instead I read about how "Butt Ugly" I apparently am for being Chinese. I don't even know what you mean by "Chinese" -- as a person with Han, Manchu, and possibly Mongolian blood, I'm curious to know which percentage of me is offensive to you.

Government, culture, and race are all different things here. I just wish these things would stop getting conflated and that people will just being so THICKHEADED about sticking to the idea that because a GOVERNMENT is oppressive, then people of the same racial composition as the members of that government must also be oppressive. Spending time dwelling over how much Hans suck, or Tibetans suck, isn't actually enriching ANYONE'S culture. (Except maybe the culture of racial discrimination.)

The anti-Chinese messages you read here are a result of a heavy hand that the Chinese government deals with its minorities. Many feel there currently is a cultural genocide against the Uygurs and Tibetans. Uyghur and east of central Asia were part of China 1500 years ago. Turks were barbarian nomad and biggest enemy of China then. Chinese allied with Persian to defeat Turks. Uyghur people ( East Turks) were accepted as refuges by Chinese Emperor to live inside China to escape the tribe war between Western Turks and Eastern Turks. If you don't like China, we are happy to let you go any time. Don't claim Chinese territory as yours.
