Why will not any of today's players take the time to play like this I don't know. I know they are capable of it but they just will not. Notice all the slants etc. that Gene does. He plays 2 strings and 3 strings together a lot. Just listen at 1:18 -incredible. Today's players would play 1 string where he plays 2 and 3 because it takes a lot of care and love to put that much into a song. The love of the instrument comes through so clear. It is so sad there are no more players like Gene & Josh.
I grew up in Franklinton N.C. and lived across the street from Gene. I used to love to ride in his Catie. It was light green and reminded me of Elvis's car. We all knew he was special but never did we think he would play music with some of the greatest country and bluegrass stars in the bussiness. I am so greatful I had the chance to not only know him but the be a friend of Gene's.
Gene was one of the few players who could make a dobro sound almost like a pedal steel. I'm definitely taking notes from this video.

When you watch this and listen to it you are seeing and hearing a master of the instrument, playing it as it was intended to be played.
