  • We in the UK say "SOUL-der", and we're all a bit confused why you all say "SOD-er". Although it is charming, and after all, vive la difference! By the way, this tut is truly helpful, thank you so much for it :D

  • I tried this mod, but when I plug it into the jack, the external tap tempo works, but all the other switches on the DL4 seem to work as a tap tempo as well and are disabled and can't turn off the pedal? Do I need to use a stereo jack like you are in the video?

  • @conleycd in australia, its pronounced soL-der, as opposed to sod-der

  • Great little tutorial. Quick question: if I'm using a mono jack with just two terminals (one for sleeve, one for tip), which contact point on the board connects to which terminal, i.e. does the top contact point in the stack go to the tip or the sleeve? Thanks.

  • @FredSmithRoad It does not actually matter which goes to the tip or the sleeve if you are using a wire jack (on your unit) and on your external tap box. Just make sure you solder to the correct contacts on the PCB board.

  • excellent mod video. Very well done. Thank you for posting.

  • Awesome!! I didn't realize it was so easy. Don't even have to take the thing apart. Thanks for the vid!

  • I don't know what you're talking about or who you're responding to. On the tap tempo switch there isn't necessarily a ground and a signal because it is connected to a circuit inside the unit. The tap tempo is not activated by shorting the signal to the ground of the unit - it is shorting the contacts of an IC in the DL4. If you use a plastic jack and only tie to one external tap tempo you will always be fine. If you tie to another delay unit you can use a momentary DPDT switch for dual tap.

  • Very nice! Cant wait to try, i wonder if this could hint at a way to implement a midi clock input into the dl4 further along?

  • That sounds a little strange to me. Make sure the jack that you are using for the external tap tempo is plastic and not metal. If your tap tempo is in a metal box make sure that the box is not tied to ground (if it hit another pedal you could have problems). The tap tempo mod should not affect the other switches. Try that and let me know how it goes.

  • I made sure to use a plastic jack. I soldered the wires to the left most contacts as opposed to the right ones, but ended up trying the others as well while trouble shooting. Connections are good. I'm gonna try some things with the power supply today. I've got it daisy chained on my board.

  • Hey man. I tried out your mod and I'm having a slight problem. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for trouble shooting it. The DL4 works just fine with the external tap. When I test the new jack, it works and registers the tap tempo great. I seems to shut down the other switches when the tap tempo is plugged in though, but still functions normally when removed. Any thoughts?

  • Actually, Just tested the individually power supply and also tried to run it on an independent tap instead of my universal one that was connected to another pedal. Still no good. Trouble shooting will ensue tonight.

  • Love the way Yanks and Canadians pronounce solder!

  • Hey Poopyloo - how do you think it should be pronounced? Spell it phonetically - I'll consider changing my pronunciation.

  • Ha ha ha No offence meant. In England it's pronounced SOUL DA. Don't change a thing..I really do love it!

  • That sounds perfect and then i could just unsolder it if i ever wanna resell it! Okay i just need to brush up on my soldering skills

  • Hi there, You could... but you would have to unsolder the 1/4 connection from the PCB board, replace the connector... it seems like a bit of mess and a hassle. I think it would also detract from your resale value. Instead of drilling a hole, just fish the two wires out under your battery compartment. Tie a knot somewhere so if the connector gets pulled it doesn't pull on the solder joint. Solder up a 1/4 connector on those two wires. That way no one will ever know and no drill! Is that ok?

  • Hey conleycd this mod's concept is awesome! Great ingenuity! I have a question though can this mod be possibly made on the expression pedal's input jack so i dont have to drill through anything? Let me know what you think thanks!

  • Great post!

The mod I'd love to have on mine, if it is possible, is to make the reverse function on the loop sampler mode ONE tap instead of TWO, and the 1/2 Speed TWO taps instead of ONE.

Or a jack for an external switch to do the reverse and the internal 4th switch do the 1/2 speed (or vice versa).

  • hey conleycd, I followed your mod and did everything, and it works. But I am getting this power shortage thing going on whenever I add another pedal to the signal chain. I realised as soon as I unplugged the line cable from the newly added jack, everything was ok again. Can you help me on this one? Have you ever encountered this poblem?

  • I suspect that what is happening is you are sharing a powersupply. The jack you are using is probably a metal jack on the chassis of the Line6. You are probably shorting out your powersupply. Try this - use a different power supply for the Line6 - do you still have the same problem? Change to a plastic jack. Make sure your tap tempo is not daisy chained to another tap tempo device (i.e. DD5). You may need to switch a couple of things on the Line6 to do that or make a dual tap switch.

  • If you are still having problems. Private message me and I can give you some email help if you send me some pics of your setup. I can also tell you how to (if you need to) make a dual tap tempo pretty easy (I might post a video of my dual tap tempo if people find it helpful).

  • Man u fucking rock...I have a question...is it posible to disable the tap tempo of the pedal and somehow enable it as another preset?...it'd be great to have 4 presets in my DL4 and also the external tap tempo...anyway i'm getting this mod as soon as possible!!...thnx...

  • Hmm, that would be a good idea. I'm sure someone could do it but I don't know how. There was a DL4 mod that I saw once where you could add another 3 presets by putting an additional switch in (I think on the top). I tried a quick google today to see if I could find it but no such luck. You might be able to find it.

  • I'm not sure if he got it form your video, but he in general did the same thing. but has a Y connection jack to go to his boss dd5 as well.

  • you rock!!

  • the soder points where the big thing i was worried about. didn't know for sure which ones to Use, considering that there where four to deal with. you have for sure answered my questions. and another great use for this is, i have a pretty old dl4 myself, and have already replaced the tap switch on the machine once, but it seems to give me problems about frequently, adding the external tap saves the foot switch on the unit. P.s. the guitarist for hillsong united did this linked with his boss dd5.

  • Are you telling me Rockster363, that the fellow from Hillsong United did this mod frpm my video or he had it done previously (I'm sure anyone interested could have figured it out if they really wanted to)? Let me know. That's real cool if he lifted it from here.

  • What are the benefits of having an external tap tempo?

  • You can check the other video I posted for some benefits. Basically, you can put a tap tempo any where on your pedal board. I personally find it hard to tap tempo over top of 5 pedals. Or you can sync your DL4 with another tap tempo device like a Boss DD5 (for dual delays) or whatever you like.

  • dude you are a legend!!!! mines getting done as soon as i get my dl4 back!
