That's the problem with a lot of people who have problems with religion, they think that God's way of thinking should be similar to their own.
@deniart Thanks for your interesting answer. Does that same answer apply to slavery too? According to the Bible God supports slavery (Exodus 21). I don't support slavery. Does this mean I just have the wrong perspective, my knowledge and ethics are limited, and I should follow the God's word and start supporting slavery? Would that be the moral thing to, would that make me a better person?
@SidHenderson Sorry but this is where you are wrong. The bible doesn't support "chattel slavery", it condemns it. However the slavery that is spoken of in scripture refers to indentured servitude and there were many laws that protected the rights of servants. Many people confuse the two when they try to claim the Bible supported slavery - that's just absolutely wrong.
@deniart I disagree with your interpretation. For example "However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." (Leviticus 25:44-46)
@SidHenderson And? What point are you trying to make? You still haven't provided any evidence that God condones 'chattel slavery'. The verse you provided doesn't state what you are trying claim.
@deniart I didn't claim chattel slavery, don't put words in my mouth. Scripture refers to indentured servitude? That's not true. What it refers to is between these two and it still involves ownership. The slaves are the master's property even though you can't sell them. It's still slavery.
So what if they have some rights to protect them? It still means ownership of another human being and giving the right to treat human beings like property. Read the verses I quoted with some more thought.
@SidHenderson I didn't say that you claimed chattel slavery so I didn't put words in your mouth, it's a matter of you not reading what I wrote carefully. I said that there's a difference between chattel slavery and indentured servitude. The Bible distinguishes between the two. The Bible speaks against enforced slavery where the servant is brutalized a the whims of the master. When ever someone makes the false claim that the bible is Pro-slavery, they usually misunderstand the difference.
@SidHenderson Again, this is where you're wrong. It doesn't mean ownership of a another human being. The servant usually sells himself into indentured servitude to pay or work off a debt and once the debt is paid, they are released and free. And here's the kicker. After 7 years of servitude ALL SLAVES ARE TO BE SET FREE. Whether or not their debt is paid off or not. They are free. I would like for you to please explain "what treatment like property means" to you?
@SidHenderson I didn't put words in your mouth however if you keep claiming that masters treat their slaves as property then you are claiming "chattel slavery". The fact is that the slaves sell themselves into service to pay off a debt and once the debt is paid they are set free. And here's the kicker, after 7 years ALL SLAVES are set free regardless if their debt is paid or not. You make the mistake like everyone when you read into the english and run away with it without careful study.
@SidHenderson I would like for you to explain what you believe "treat like property" means to you because clearly you're reading into that something negative.
@deniart To ”treat as property” refers to non-Israelite slaves, they DID NOT have the same rights as Israelite slaves. It simply means that this is not a voluntary contract to pay off debts, they are NOT FREE, NOT AUTONOMOUS, can't make their own decisions, can be passed on as inheritance, and they are in these conditions FOR LIFE.
What you have said so far includes several errors. For example, all slaves were NOT freed after 6 years (it was 6, not 7 as you said). Only Hebrew slaves were freed.
@deniart The treatment was different for native and foreign slaves. Foreign slaves were slaves for life. (see Leviticus 25:44-46).
You said ”The fact is that the slaves sell themselves into service to pay off a debt and once the debt is paid they are set free”. This is a LIE! Captives in wars were taken as slaves, according to Deuteronomy it was okay to take foreigners as slaves. Only taking Israelites was forbidden.
@SidHenderson I was referring to Israelite slaves and it is fact that they were set free after payment of debt (It's not a lie). Foreign slaves were not treated any worse than Israelite slaves as a matter of fact they were not "chattel slaves" nor were they indentured servents... it's under the terms of vassalage.
@deniart And among Israelites, how does a daughter ”sell herself into service” when his father sends her to be a slave beacause of financial reasons?
It was also possible to BE BORN INTO SLAVERY. If a male Israelite slave had been given a wife by his master, then the wife and any children which had resulted from the union would remain the property of the master. (see Exodus 21:4)
@SidHenderson What difference does any of this make....after an Israelite pays off his debt, they are set free. After 7 years of servitude all debt is cleared and they are set free. In regard to Exodus 21: 4...it's all voluntary, an Israelite goes into the marriage knowing this and it's his choice as to whether or not he wishes to continue BEFOREHAND on for life in order to marry. His hand is not forced.
@deniart You're only telling part of what the Bible says about slavery, you are picking and choosing. Why do you do this? I see you have quoted several passages from a certain article by J. Burke. This is not an objective article about slavery in the Bible, it's an article trying to defend his own beliefs using whatever means necessary, twisting what the Bible actually says. Please, try to look at this a bit more objectively and think for yourself.
@SidHenderson J. Burke is my husband. I'm well aware of his website on word press. And besides until you can substantiate your claims it's all your opinion. You're good a making blanket assertions but to date you have not proved your point one bit.
@deniart I have substantiated my claims by referring to the Bible. You have tried to substantiate yours by referring to a biased article. Old Testament Laws were laws that allowed the oppression of women, children, the poor and non-Israelites through slavery. The laws were and are immoral. Everyone is free to read the Bible and draw their own conclusions. You have made your conclusions, I have made mine. This is going nowhere and I have no time or interest to continue. Thanks for the discussion.
@SidHenderson You have not substantiated anything. All you have done is given your opinion on what you think and I've addressed everything you aid. You also need to go to the same scholarly sources as J. Burke and use them to prove that what he said is all one sided. Until you have done so, it's all your opinion. Which laws were used to oppress women, children, the poor and non-israelite? I've addressed each verse you claim proves your point and it's actually the complete opposite.
@SidHenderson Until you prove that the article is biaed it's just an empty assertion. I've answered each verse you quoted and you had no-counter agument. Your only answer was to quote another verse you "thought" said what you wanted to say. But don't worry, you're not the only one who made the mistake of sited slavery in the Bible as proof that God is unjust and oppressive, which is laughable at best.
@deniart J. Burke's article is biased or unreliable because of at least four reasons. First, he picks from the Bible the passages that best suit his own agenda, dismissing passages that tell the other side of the story. He tries to convince the reader that the position of the slaves was actually good and leaves out key passages about slavery, for example:
@SidHenderson Wrong on so many accounts. J. Burkes articles are based on scholarly literature and the historical facts of the ANE . All the verses he quotes are in junction with the entire principles of servants in scripture.
@deniart ”Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval.” (1Pet. 2:18-29)
@SidHenderson That is not a good example quoting from the New Testament for so many reasons. In the time of the New Testament, the Law had passed. Peter is referring to those slaves who are under servitude of non-Jews and mroe likely Romans who were never under the Law. You really need to research your history more.
@deniart Second, Burke concentrates mainly on the conditions of the Israelite slaves. The conditions of the non-Israelite slaves were much worse. They couldn't get free when the debt was paid, they were slaves for life.
Third, Burke picks only sources that support his argument and doesn't present opposing views. This is a sign of very poor research. If Burke's argument was solid he would be able to show the opposing views and then point out why they are incorrect.
@SidHenderson Wrong again. First of all your entire claim was that God approved of slavery. You never distinguished between "chattel slavery" or "identured servitude". And I've already addressed that the conditions of non-Israelite slaves were much better than those of indentured servitude. Non-Israelite servitude was known as Vasselage. Vassalage had many rights that protected them included the protection under the Israelites. This is covered in teh articled which u haven't read.
@SidHenderson Poor research, this is laughable. to date you have not proven how this is poor research and sorry but your uninformed research doesn't really cut the mustard. This is nothing but another empty claim without anything to substantiate your claim. You have to do better than this. It's all opinion and yo have not provided any facts to prove your point.
@deniart Fourth, Burke makes a comparison between the Law of Moses and the laws of other ANE societies, implying that giving more rights to the slaves (under the law of Moses) somehow makes slavery morally right. It doesn't, it's still slavery.
@deniart I apologize but I don't have any more time for this. I'm sure you'll have the last word and tell me again that I haven't proven or substantiated anything. I really hope people would actually study the Bible themselves and see the atrocities and immoralities in it. Luckily most Christians don't try to rationalize these but decide to take guide from the parts that actually are good in the Bible. Goodbye.
@SidHenderson You haven't substantiated everything. You haven't provided anything from scholarly literature to support your claim and shown any specific examples from such scholars that disproved what J. Burke said until you do,all you have claimed is nothing but opinion to support your opinion. So having the last word with you is pretty easy.
@deniart Are these the kind of laws that protect the slaves? "When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." (Exodus 21:20-21)
@SidHenderson Absolutely, did you not see that fact that a man is punished if he strikes his slave? Usually the owner can get away with treating his slave however he wanted, to the point of abuse and death and get away with it. But under the Law, the Master is to be punished.
@SidHenderson * Any servant who ran away from their master automatically gained their liberty and were free to live wherever they chose; not only was it illegal to return them to their master, it was also forbidden to oppress them in any way
@SidHenderson Under the Law of Moses, the master who struck his servant and knocked out an eye or tooth, had to let the servant go free (Exodus 21:26-27), a law understood by the Jews as referring to any permanent injury. In contrast, under
@SidHenderson ... the Code of Hammurabi a man who struck an even ex-slave and knocked out their eye or tooth had only to pay a monetary fine, and there was no penalty for injuring a slave at all. Other ANE law codes also failed to provide any such protection for servants and slaves:
When it comes to Jesus Christ the horns of the devils shows up, the anit-christ are delirious of anger to descridit the Lord or lords, King of kings, They will all all their effort to convince others wiht all the lies amd misleading statement against Jesus ,well ENEMIES OF CHRIST THEY HAVE ALREADY TOLD US ABOUT YOU PEOPLE, perhaps you thinks you are winning because of the chaos you have made ,creeated in this planet to humans, to the fallowers of Christ but in reality you knew your end near
@ceboym are you praying for the destruction of your enemies or for their conversion before it is too late for them? The Jesus I know is loving and merciful, He came into the world to heal the sick and bring down the unjust and prideful. He surrounded Himself with sinners, and those victimized by society. Jesus sees the pain inside and heals those that want to follow Him in righteousness. This life is too short for me to pick the speck from another's eye when I have a log in my own.
the old testament is an evil book about a murderous, baby killing god. most of its laws are so barbaric that even the most hardcore religious nuts don't follow them.
@deniart i guess you haven't really read the whole bible, then. or you're blissfully unaware of where most O.T. stories originally come from. (hint: not from some omnipotent god).
@deniart "Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare children." (Isaiah 13:16-18)
Were the children of Babylon so wicked too that they deserved death?

deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson I would like for you to explain what you believe "treat like property" means to you because clearly you're reading into that something negative.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart To ”treat as property” refers to non-Israelite slaves, they DID NOT have the same rights as Israelite slaves. It simply means that this is not a voluntary contract to pay off debts, they are NOT FREE, NOT AUTONOMOUS, can't make their own decisions, can be passed on as inheritance, and they are in these conditions FOR LIFE.
What you have said so far includes several errors. For example, all slaves were NOT freed after 6 years (it was 6, not 7 as you said). Only Hebrew slaves were freed.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@deniart The treatment was different for native and foreign slaves. Foreign slaves were slaves for life. (see Leviticus 25:44-46).
You said ”The fact is that the slaves sell themselves into service to pay off a debt and once the debt is paid they are set free”. This is a LIE! Captives in wars were taken as slaves, according to Deuteronomy it was okay to take foreigners as slaves. Only taking Israelites was forbidden.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson I was referring to Israelite slaves and it is fact that they were set free after payment of debt (It's not a lie). Foreign slaves were not treated any worse than Israelite slaves as a matter of fact they were not "chattel slaves" nor were they indentured servents... it's under the terms of vassalage.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart And among Israelites, how does a daughter ”sell herself into service” when his father sends her to be a slave beacause of financial reasons?
It was also possible to BE BORN INTO SLAVERY. If a male Israelite slave had been given a wife by his master, then the wife and any children which had resulted from the union would remain the property of the master. (see Exodus 21:4)
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson What difference does any of this make....after an Israelite pays off his debt, they are set free. After 7 years of servitude all debt is cleared and they are set free. In regard to Exodus 21: 4...it's all voluntary, an Israelite goes into the marriage knowing this and it's his choice as to whether or not he wishes to continue BEFOREHAND on for life in order to marry. His hand is not forced.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart You're only telling part of what the Bible says about slavery, you are picking and choosing. Why do you do this? I see you have quoted several passages from a certain article by J. Burke. This is not an objective article about slavery in the Bible, it's an article trying to defend his own beliefs using whatever means necessary, twisting what the Bible actually says. Please, try to look at this a bit more objectively and think for yourself.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson J. Burke is my husband. I'm well aware of his website on word press. And besides until you can substantiate your claims it's all your opinion. You're good a making blanket assertions but to date you have not proved your point one bit.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart I have substantiated my claims by referring to the Bible. You have tried to substantiate yours by referring to a biased article. Old Testament Laws were laws that allowed the oppression of women, children, the poor and non-Israelites through slavery. The laws were and are immoral. Everyone is free to read the Bible and draw their own conclusions. You have made your conclusions, I have made mine. This is going nowhere and I have no time or interest to continue. Thanks for the discussion.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson You have not substantiated anything. All you have done is given your opinion on what you think and I've addressed everything you aid. You also need to go to the same scholarly sources as J. Burke and use them to prove that what he said is all one sided. Until you have done so, it's all your opinion. Which laws were used to oppress women, children, the poor and non-israelite? I've addressed each verse you claim proves your point and it's actually the complete opposite.
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Until you prove that the article is biaed it's just an empty assertion. I've answered each verse you quoted and you had no-counter agument. Your only answer was to quote another verse you "thought" said what you wanted to say. But don't worry, you're not the only one who made the mistake of sited slavery in the Bible as proof that God is unjust and oppressive, which is laughable at best.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart J. Burke's article is biased or unreliable because of at least four reasons. First, he picks from the Bible the passages that best suit his own agenda, dismissing passages that tell the other side of the story. He tries to convince the reader that the position of the slaves was actually good and leaves out key passages about slavery, for example:
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Wrong on so many accounts. J. Burkes articles are based on scholarly literature and the historical facts of the ANE . All the verses he quotes are in junction with the entire principles of servants in scripture.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart ”Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval.” (1Pet. 2:18-29)
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson That is not a good example quoting from the New Testament for so many reasons. In the time of the New Testament, the Law had passed. Peter is referring to those slaves who are under servitude of non-Jews and mroe likely Romans who were never under the Law. You really need to research your history more.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart Second, Burke concentrates mainly on the conditions of the Israelite slaves. The conditions of the non-Israelite slaves were much worse. They couldn't get free when the debt was paid, they were slaves for life.
Third, Burke picks only sources that support his argument and doesn't present opposing views. This is a sign of very poor research. If Burke's argument was solid he would be able to show the opposing views and then point out why they are incorrect.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Wrong again. First of all your entire claim was that God approved of slavery. You never distinguished between "chattel slavery" or "identured servitude". And I've already addressed that the conditions of non-Israelite slaves were much better than those of indentured servitude. Non-Israelite servitude was known as Vasselage. Vassalage had many rights that protected them included the protection under the Israelites. This is covered in teh articled which u haven't read.
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Poor research, this is laughable. to date you have not proven how this is poor research and sorry but your uninformed research doesn't really cut the mustard. This is nothing but another empty claim without anything to substantiate your claim. You have to do better than this. It's all opinion and yo have not provided any facts to prove your point.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart Fourth, Burke makes a comparison between the Law of Moses and the laws of other ANE societies, implying that giving more rights to the slaves (under the law of Moses) somehow makes slavery morally right. It doesn't, it's still slavery.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@deniart I apologize but I don't have any more time for this. I'm sure you'll have the last word and tell me again that I haven't proven or substantiated anything. I really hope people would actually study the Bible themselves and see the atrocities and immoralities in it. Luckily most Christians don't try to rationalize these but decide to take guide from the parts that actually are good in the Bible. Goodbye.
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson You haven't substantiated everything. You haven't provided anything from scholarly literature to support your claim and shown any specific examples from such scholars that disproved what J. Burke said until you do,all you have claimed is nothing but opinion to support your opinion. So having the last word with you is pretty easy.
deniart 1 year ago
@deniart Are these the kind of laws that protect the slaves? "When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." (Exodus 21:20-21)
SidHenderson 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Absolutely, did you not see that fact that a man is punished if he strikes his slave? Usually the owner can get away with treating his slave however he wanted, to the point of abuse and death and get away with it. But under the Law, the Master is to be punished.
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Several laws in the Law of Moses which applied to servitude are unique, having no counterpart in any other ANE society:
* Servants were protected from injury by their masters, and were set free if they were injured
* Murdering a slave incurred the death penalty
* It was illegal to capture individuals and place them in coercive servitude as property (chattel slavery)
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson * Any servant who ran away from their master automatically gained their liberty and were free to live wherever they chose; not only was it illegal to return them to their master, it was also forbidden to oppress them in any way
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson Under the Law of Moses, the master who struck his servant and knocked out an eye or tooth, had to let the servant go free (Exodus 21:26-27), a law understood by the Jews as referring to any permanent injury. In contrast, under
deniart 1 year ago
@SidHenderson ... the Code of Hammurabi a man who struck an even ex-slave and knocked out their eye or tooth had only to pay a monetary fine, and there was no penalty for injuring a slave at all. Other ANE law codes also failed to provide any such protection for servants and slaves:

ceboym 1 year ago

Noah had Shem (Semites), Ham (Hamites), & Japheth (Japhethites).
From Shem: Hebrews, Chaldeans, Assyrians, Persians, & Syrians
From Ham: Canaanites, Egyptians, Philistines,Hittites, & Amorites (The rest of Africa)
From Japheth: Greeks, Thracians, Scythians (Most part of Europe & Asia Minor)
Israelites are from Shem. Jacob (Israel)'s descendants, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.
