did he also play on the slow blues version of voodoo chile or was it steve winwood? what is the name of this documenary? i'd like to see the entire thing again.
I was watching that documentary last night and one of the highlight is really when that guy touched the hammond and unlock the secret groove behind Rainy Day, Dream Away like he's playing in your living room.
back in the 80s i had a cassette where i had spliced rainy day and still raining into one seamless continuous track, it sounded really good. maybe i will do this digitally and upload to YT....
@gamester57 Chillax man just joking I just noticed you removed a comment I personally have commented drunk and regretted. If your american, pissed oner here means drunk
Mike Finnigan is about to release his music off of his website that is supposed to be up and running by 1/1/10. Check it out and you too can own the Captain Bobby Stout single from the 60's as well as all the other great Michael Finnigan music.
cap'n bobby stout done found me out and i owe th eman another year -YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH i owe the man another year. its off crazed hipsters - finnegan and wood mike finnegan and jerry wood
i stand corrected. i still have my copy of crazed hipsters and no way is that song on it. but capn bobby stout did find me out. i spent a night in his jail in 1973.
I searched for years for the JHB album and finally found one on ebay. I'm a fortunate person. The album is out of print. I'll wager it's one of the few out of print discs that was reviewed in the NYT (a couple of years ago, now, I think)as one of the first real jazz-rock fusion things. Look for it. If you have no luck, post here to me and I'll see what I can see.
a stunning album by one of the greatest amalgams of diverse musical talent ever assembled. I saw them in person four times and I have never seen anything better.
Bobby Stout was on the Jerry Hahn Brotherhood Album. It's out of print, but copies show up on ebay now and again. I got aperfectly great vinyl last Xmas. One of the best of all time
Just saw Joe Cocker last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater FL. He was awesome and Mike was in the band. What a treat, don't miss this tour. These guys are a class act, very powerful, energetic and soulful and Joe is in prime form. Highlite for me was Help From My Friends where Mike kicked it off with some fat B3 soloing.
i dig his style sooo bad! wauw:D does anyone else know of any artist that playes this kind of organ music, cause i couldn't find anything else of this guy, who i think is incredible! (and i am very jealous with you for beiing his cousin:P)
Mike's pretty incredible-he's a local legend here in Lawrence KS where he went to KU on a basketball scholarship but made more money playing in bands - took the midwest by storm. If you like this style of Hammond B3 playing I'd recommend Brother Jack McDuff and Charles Earland, in the jazz section. Mike toured with Etta James for 12 years so if you want to hear more, find Etta's CDs.
No Problem! Search for Jerry Hahn Brotherhood to hear more. The true Holy Grail of Finnigan fans is the great lost 45 of the JHB doing "Hey Good Lookin'." I have heard this single exactly once in my life, 36 years ago. Wow. I mean. Wow.
I will look around. I don't have it but I still know a lot of people who have been involved in the music biz in Wichita for years, which is where this track was recorded. I will check back.
I had the pleasure to meet him on 6/29/08 at the Joe Cocker concert. (hes been playing with him for about a year.)I also play with his brother Chris Finnigan in Toledo, Ohio! So much talent & they both are so cool. i hope to jam with Mike at some point! Catfish-Toledo, Ohio
@erin3594 I believe you, man. I met him years ago @ a Meeting (U know what I mean), and you could not want to meet a more humble ,gracious unassuming individual. He doesn't show off or name drop. He only spoke about Dave Mason or Jimi after I had to hound it out of him! If only all talented musicians were more like him.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Michael before a CSN show in Portland, ME a couple of years ago. Couldn't have been nicer and more down to earth. A legend but also classy.
Mike Finnigan's keyboard and vocal work is superlative...everything he touches comes out so much greater than it could have been without him. His feel for the material he plays is probably without equal. He can burn, or he can play with utter gut wrenching simplicity. I've watched him since the beginning, and for what he does, NO ONE IS BETTER! I've met him a few times, and he is always kind and polite. When you cover a tune he played Hammond on, you can truely appreciate his virtuosity! Doc
I don't share the world's love of Hendrix, but I think Finnigan is a musical GIANT. His work with Jerry Wood on "Crazed Hipsters" is one of the best blues/rock albums ever recorded. His voice on "Black & White" is unbelievabe. He recorded and toured with Crosby Stills & Nash, handled vocals when Crosby was too fucked up to carry his weight. Mike is one of the unknown major dudes in rock/blues history.
@MikeyParks mmmkay, I checked out those albums, pretty mediocre imho. not even in the same league as even hendrix's lesser efforts. He played great keyboards on Electric Ladyland tho!
No it was Steve Winwood.
The prog. is Classic Albums Electric Ladyland its part of a whole series of Classic Recordings
Cheers
