They use recycled leg nylon stockings and have volunteers stuff them with hair. Any clean human head hair, pet and animal fur, wool, feathers, or fleece is accepted.
They are currently full, and are going to use their current supply to make 20 miles of hair boom.
Encourage your local salon to take part! Or if you're willing, ship it for them!
The first hair grouping would have collected all the oil if it was refined oil (like in spills). The oil she was using was "used motoroil" so there will be a lot of impurities naturally meaning there would be more hair needed to absorb the thicker oil. Thank you for the Demo.
@ClemyNX Hair actually picks up oil. Hair adsorbs oil molecules, leaving water behind. I can tell you from personal experience that the hair is what is picking up the oil from water.
check out on FB: Clean the Gulf Oil Spill with Hair Mats.
They have a hair mat that has surface area, made of hair and if efficient.....or just search youtube for "Ottimat". Its not expensive at all, only $2 per piece, to clean $25 gal. and it works on land or sea!
why hair adsorbs the oil?? .. what are the properties that made hair to adsorb??

I wonder who came up with the idea of using hair...

Try to do that in the sea instead, with thousands and thousands of oil barrels. Get real, we are failing to clean the Gulf.

How can you be sure that the oil isn't just sticking to the tissue? you should show a video of a bag stuffed with another material.
