I agree with Rand. Yes SEO can be done after your website is built, but to be above your competitors it really helps to think about SEO while designing your web page's. E.G. I have called my domain something other than the keyword I am targeting, because I like the name and thought it would draw attention. But my competitors who where thinking of SEO from the start chose a domain name that will help them rank higher for that key word.

interesting. its seems there two schools of thought. we have a SEO partner who also believes the SEO strategy is best implemented in a sites build out vs post. mostly because its easier to start with the right frame work vs adding it in later.

Fishkin obviously has a vested interest in selling his SEO "tools" and needs to convince users that the process is never ending.
It does not matter if SEO is added after the fact or during the initial construction.
SEO is the composition, formatting, and display of the webpage's content and not some mysterious *something* that must be built in.
