I'm going to Europe for a working holiday thing. I want a fast lens (1.4, 1.8 or 2.0) that would be good for standard walk around photography. I have a crop-sensor 550d, would the focal length be short enough for that, or am I better of getting something wider?
If you're looking for something wide angle, don't go with this. Technically this is a "wide angle" lens but on a cropped sensor it acts like a 50mm, which is not very wide at all.
I have a canon 50mm 1.8 lens...Would it be much of a difference if I got this sigma 30 mm 1.4? Will the quality be better? I just want to know if upgrading from a canon 50mm 1.8 lens to a sigma 30 mm 1.4 is worth it.
It really depends on what you are doing. If you think you'll need more space when you're shooting, then the 30mm might be for you. I recommend just looking around at other lenses until you get a nice feel for how you should expand your collection of lenses. As for quality, I think you will be fine with that 50mm 1.8 for awhile.
Yeah it's in the review, just some text over the review section outlining that. I'm still learning so I didn't really think of it, but I do have one now and it is definitely a MUST for outdoor shooting.
@RedHandedRejects i like it now i got it as a gift and so happy to get it i didn't see the sd card was a class 4 and i was told as a joke that it only took 30 second clips. i should have know to research it but I'm use to a EOS-1D Mark IV but noe that have i have my own dslr I'm happy with it very happy.
I really couldn't tell you! I'd compare the test footage in this video with yours and judge for yourself. I'd have to try using both lenses to really form a proper opinion.
Everything you saw in the video was shot on a cropped sensor camera. So you can reference that. It's only different on a full framed camera, where it's basically unusable.
@RedHandedRejects I believe it won't work at all on a 35mm sensor camera. I believe the mounts are different? its built for and only for crop sensored cameras.
@RedHandedRejects I will mount on any Canon camera. However, you get some REALLY hard vignetting since the image projected doesn't fill up the full sensor. You basically get a full circle of black around the outside.
If you want to get the same shallow DoF effect without an ND filter, you can get a longer focal length lens. With a longer focal length, you don't need as wide of an aperture to get the same shallow focus effect. But this restricts you when you're indoors… ND is best for this.
@RedHandedRejects Also if you want to get close-ups with this lens, you can get an extension tube. You lose AF(which I don't think you use anyway), aperture control, and infinity focus, but it lets you focus closer.
The Canon 5D Mark II is another Canon DSLR with a full frame censor. It's very nice but really expensive. This lens does not work on the 5D because it's designed for cropped sensors. Hope this helped!
@RedHandedRejects Yes it may have a good picture view but I wouldn't give up 7D in a heartbeat. There are somethings in the 7D that I like much more than 5D. 5D only has 9 focus points while 7D has 19. 7D also is right on in focusing while 5D can take more time or not have the ability to focus on a certain view point. Hard to decide which is better. Both neck and neck if you ask me...
You're right. They both have their strong points. From all the footage I've seen from the 5D is really outstanding and does knock the T2i and 7D out of the water. The HD out is really something I want too . . . plus it's better for photography and with a magic lantern update, it's unbeatable. But for the price, the 7D is pretty great too. I'm gonna update my T2i with the firmware pretty soon and might do a review on it in the future once I have another camera to record with.
Haha WELL most of the music throughout is by Keelay, there's a link at the end of the video to his facebook page where you can find his soundcloud and download some of the music. I don't think you'll find most of it anymore because he doesn't have what I use available anymore. The theme song and "sad music" I made myself and you can check out at my souncloud which is just soundcloud. com/redhandedreject
Hahaha thanks! Canons are great. Go for the T3i or something though if you're switching. Virtually the same thing as the T2i but with a flippy screen which I would appreciate so much with videos like this one.
Great review with sense of humour! Keep it up

Your shutter should never change. You need a ND filter. If you change the shutter the video can get choppy.

Possibly. I did see clips of people using it with 35mm sensor cameras, but they might have been using adapters.

You can use neutral density filters for outdoor shooting in bright light with wide apertures rather than using faster shutter speeds.
