  • Those 3 exclamation marks really drew me in.

  • you could maybe use these crystals for fiberoptic preasure sensors

though i dont know if the would cost effective

  • 3:20 allright say that 3 time really really fast, while standing on your head....& go

  • Dubstep

  • how large can these crystals grow, if you doubled the recipe and left it for say a week?

  • Lol say tht stuffs name three times fast O-o

  • you could coat guitar strings and picks with it and it would glow whenever the strings come into contact with the frets. That would be pretty awesome... not sure I would want that stuff on my guitar though...

  • Raves!

  • Say that string of complicated words five times fast. I dare you.

  • wtf 1:38

  • 1:38 HOW THE FUCK U JUST SAY THAT?

  • That chemical's name seriously needs an acronym.

  • I died laughing when I heard the chemical name for them

  • you should call this video confusion with a little bit of cool stuff

  • You kinda have lady hands..

  • @ChaseUbito

It really wouldn't surprise me if the creator of these videos was a woman. It is unfortunate that sometimes women have to do this kind of thing in order to avoid being treated poorly by the ignorant masses.

  • Europium Tetrakis Triethylammonum

    Your language

    Smash Glow Crystals!!!!

    My language

  • 1:35 win, the words :D

  • @nurdrage this video reminds me of those golfball sized balls that were sold in toystores that when smashed together would make a pop/flash.

  • @NurdRage Is there a reason you use a syringe for the triethylamine over, say, a graduated cylinder?

  • You should do a video on Piezoelectricity! I've seen things like Rochelle Salt synthesized, but I would like to see what you could pull off with high purity chemicals in your lab.

  • so I pee in a cup and it forms smash glow crystals XD

  • Why do you use voice changer??? PLEASE ANSWER

  • Do you need to prepare the crystals in a hood? It sounds like you did use one, but I'm not sure.

  • I'm looking into making these crystals for a science demonstration show I do, and I was wondering if your ethanol was pure or denatured. Since it's just a solvent, I assume it doesn't matter if there is some methanol present? Do you think this is bright enough to be seen from a stage in a darkened auditorium, or is it better for close-up demonstration? Thanks!

  • @mrhomescientist I used pure ethanol with a bit of benzene contaminant (from azeotropic distillation). I don't see any problems with methanol, but i didn't try it myself.

The light is quite visible and is brighter with greater/faster grinding with the spatula. So i think it would be visible in a dark auditorium. I reccomend trying it a few times first. The newer/bigger the crystals the greater the flash.

BTW, good job on the fire compilation video.

  • @NurdRage Hey thanks for the response and support. I'm glad that project came together - we had a lot of great material filmed, and it was fun to be a part of. It might be a while before I get to try this experiment, but when I'm able I'll let you know how it goes. I really want to try it.

  • @NurdRage excellent, i look forward to your results. It's a pity sciencemadness doesn't accept videos, or at least not from me. Good luck!

  • When you destroy the crystals the powder still exhibits fluorescence? This compound is toxic or dangerous? And, the reagents are expensive?

  • throw it at someone's house?

  • I can never finish this video, my computer keeps freezing at 1:40. Anyone else having this problem?

  • My head exploded at 1:37.

  • My head exploded at 1.37.

  • So the destruction of the large crystalline structure is slightly weaker than the formation of a smaller crystalline structure, so it releases a slight bit of energy into the florescent europium, which converts the energy into light? Quite an interesting reaction. Definitely one of my favorites you've shown.

  • cool video. i remember seeing another science video that created light, something called "the barking dog". but dont really remember much of it.

do u have any video that can be useful for emergency? or maybe a science project that can be placed on the computer desk to just play around with everyday?

  • @T1ger8oi barking dog is something related to sulphur.

  • 1:41...what the fuck!? just say salty alien sperm!

  • this video must have been a mouth full O_O

also make a glove outta this stuff and when someone is stupid slap them in syle XD

  • dont they make sparks wich causes them to make lite wich makes it so they turn that color?

  • likke a glow stick (not really)

  • Poul it on your hand and slap someone

  • lol they mad crystal meth just kidding

  • Would you be able to use the same ethonal (sprry about my spelling) from the begginning,? I mean from when you first made the crystals?

  • coat a heart frozen by liquid nitrogen with the smash glow crystals and throw it on the floor! >:D

  • I wanna put some on some airsoft bb's :D

  • Coat the rubber tires of a small toy car and watch the tires glow :)

Or put it on Nerf darts XD

  • I think this guy sounds like a killer on the other line of a phone.

  • 1:37 What the fuck you say?

  • 0:02 .....did you just call me a nerd? lol

  • also known as SMASH GLOW CRYSTALS i so love that part:))

  • Gosh, you're going to make me like and favorite every single one of your videos, aren't you?

  • 5 people glow when crushed

  • @NurdRage how do you know all this? I know you are an expert, but how do you find these effects on chemicals? google or experimentation?

  • @TechBoywii The answer would probably be "yes". lol

  • same thing happens to evergreen lifesavers

go into dark room put a evergreen lifesaver into your mouth bite down hard and it lets out a violet-like spark.

  • 1:58 "...and now I'm going to hit them multiple times with a hammer"

    lol

  • @WTHEtv off by like 10 seconds...

  • @L3G1TN3SSxFTW because I think its funnier if you get the context, mostly the big words right before "triboluminescence McSciencey science... NOW ME R SMASH THEM!!!" >_<

  • @WTHEtv o i c

  • lol how many times did you have to practice saying that chemical name for the crystals to get it right?

  • yeah i'm pretty sure like nobody has those "ingredients"

  • Why does the crystal glow?

  • I'm sorry, but that voice creeps me out

  • looks like a urine sample in beginning

  • Europium Tetrakis (Dibenzoylmethide) Triethylammonium......

    O.o...WTF?!

  • @invaderjinzo432 It's better if you just sum it up into "ETDT".

  • what a long name!!!!

  • excuse me,

where can i buy buy those materials ?

    thank you

  • Fancy names ;)

  • I wonder what happens if you manage to put them in an hourglass... Will it glow every time they fall?

  • I LOVE your videos. I learn a lot from them. Thank you

  • what is wrong with the people commenting on your videos, it seems they have something against you, im sorry, i personally think that its fascinating

  • what is wrong with the people commenting on your videos, it seems they have something against you, im sorry

  • 1:38 I knew that word when I was 2!

  • Comment removed

  • Europium Tetrakis triethylammoniummm aaaaahhhh Fuck! cant say shit that big

  • use it in place of small pyrotechnics ( e.g gun shots hitting metal) for homemade movies or movies on a low budget

  • so, would you get burned from it? if the energy released is high enough i would think that it would, even if it is the same as room temperature, but i am not a expert, so, eh

  • it could be used to monitor minute movements in motion sensitive materials

  • That kinda looks like crack. Imagine going to school with some and being asked what it is. The you say the long ass name.

  • that doesnt look like DRY ethanol. lol jk

  • paintball ammo it´ll be kindda crazy

  • He sounds like the guy off power rangers

  • A car tire that lights up as it hits the road would be awesome

  • To bad I don't know any of this (7th grader) but love your vids!

  • @NurdRage kinetic glowstick???what do you thing

  • wow that word is a big lol lol

  • OR just smash mint life savers... they have triboluminescense ;p

  • Crash Testing and for that matter, any product durability testing.

  • one day when we can perfect the idea of photo cell energy, this will be a unlimited about of energy.

  • 1:37 ----->Holy fuck... First he says that long name, and then he says:"Or Smash Glow." o.O Try to say the the long name three times fast :D

  • get paintballs or airsoft pellets coated with this stuff and then play at night...sweet.

  • How the hell do you say all those huge words?

  • 1:41 killed my brain.

  • have you tried this synthesisation method with dysprosium rather than europium?

im wondering because you made the dysprosium nitrate also, if not do you reckon it would glow green/yellow due to the shorter wavelengths of dysprosium?

i want to make a a hacky sack that has a plug to allow recrystallisation :P

  • when there's a blackout...

  • Europium Tetrakis (Dibenzoylmethide) Triethylammonium .... try read this .... :)

  • I would make heaps and chuck it down onthe floor to make light, scare people or hav fun

  • you could of just said smash glow crystals instead of saying it all

  • Triboluminescient Europium Tetrakis (Dibenzoylmethide) Triethylammonium. What a mouthful.

  • are you using a voice generator a la stephen hawking?

  • @MrAirgunlover Hey,. thats wht i was thinking!! :P lol

  • lol" thatd be sweet..." (deep voice)

  • Wintergreen lifesaver candy works as well

  • reminds me quartz crystal glow...

  • What it you put it on tape, then rip tape apart?

  • wow i cant even say that

  • would it be possible to put it in a couple clear condoms and throwing it arond or squishing it in your hands

  • Comment removed

  • is there a way to turn it into a liquid?

  • Seeing your vids makes me want to change my major to Chemistry..then I get back in the real world that I rather work hard to be a lawyer..than a chemist. But I am considering Physics though..either way all 3 are hard.

  • lmao ...

when you said to close to prevent evaporation (in 0:46 )...

i wasent reading the subtitiles nd i thought you said

to prevent an apparition ... lol

nd i was like wat the fuckk !!! hahahahahha

    an apparition???..

    wat is this?? lol hahahaha

    good video tho :)

  • europa what-ium? thats a long name!

  • @evilrobotstudios Europium Tetrakis...

  • @MrAirgunlover you should try Hg(CNO)2 in your hollow points :-D

  • What other chemicals can be used to make the crystals glow a different color?

  • Where do you get your glasss vials?

  • also the same thing haens wen you smash lighning bugs only it glows for a diferent reson

  • i lik ethe name lol i wana go around asking people if they have any for sale just to confuse them i no they wont but stiff the look on their face will be pricless

  • Looks like piss and the sweets that crackle in your mouth

  • 1:38=ummmmmmmmmm, FUCK i don't understand!!!

  • so you mean it does not burn when you crush it?

  • Europium Tetrakis Triethylammonium! I can sing it to the beat of supercallifragilisticexpihalidocious!

  • @nntb but it probably won't work anyways considering there's no TCPO or sodium acetate in the mixture for making SG crystals..

  • @nntb only if he doused it in peroxide...

  • @.@

  • I like the smash glow name...

  • How 'bout a tennis and soccer ball coated in lighter fluid? That sounds like fun. But then again, you're a die hard chemist, I'm more of a "BURN BABY BURN!" pyro.

  • Make a large amount of it, spread it all over the floor and start dancing. Perfect use lol

  • I would put it in the street that would be interesting

  • That name for S-G crystals is quite a mouthful :)

  • would a floresent dye make it glow more?

  • ooh, u can fill tht stuff in a balloon and then punch it around and it will glow! tht b cooool

  • Lol, that be sweet!!!! Man, just out of curiosity, it would be nice if you could include a ball park figure of ingredient costs, not including supplies. I'm referring to all you great videos not just this one in particular. Thanks again...

  • @ecj314 I do believe he said to re-crystalize

  • is this a similar rxn to crushing wint-o-green lifesavers?

  • this also works with a fire fly's light. if you add pressure tu it it glows in that one spot.

  • If you wash the crystals in ethanol, wouldn't that cause a portion of it to be dissolved?

  • Put it on condoms!!!!!!!!! Light up sex xD

  • big... words... hurt... head... X_X

  • Imagine if we put this stuff in bag and raped them around truck tires and drove of at night out in the country

  • if you haven't already, you should do something with sulfur hexafluoride. unfortunately, despite the 6 fluorine atoms, it's not reactive, but it's the density that is the really cool thing. it has the opposite effect of helium when inhaled and you could make a piece of foil or paper float on it (just fold into a boat shape) and do a few other cool things with it.

  • oh, and that thermos trick is a KICK ASS idea. I've seen the MIT lab manuals and they put the solution in two beakers, one inside the other, and insulate it with some paper towel. but the thermos is going to work way better

  • you can also get your alcohol dry by distilling it under vacuum. below about 75mbar (irrc) the azeotrope breaks. i'd run it somewhere just below that, not straight on the vacuum line, or it'll be harder to condense

  • do you think it would be safe to coat this stuff on paintballs or bbs? i can imagine it would be mad expensive, but it would be cool when you got shot. i've never tried any of your experiments(im not an experienced chemist even though i wish i was) and i dont know how safe this stuff would be.

  • can you elaborate on the isolation/production of triethylamine?

  • holy crap its hilarious when you say the name of that stuff.

  • destroying any crystal has this affect. This one however gives off visible light, instead of infared, or whatever is specific for a certain crystal. It has to do with Entropy. If you slam quarts together, they flash also, im not sure that it isn't combustion, but it's pretty bright for rocks.

  • put it on your hair then when ever someone touches your hair in the dark it'll glow that'll be cool!!!

  • man.i thought i was a nerd

  • Maybe you could use them as a catalyst for photochemical reactions?

  • 3:19 - 3:22 lol .. :D wtf =O

  • Baseball! Lol every hot there is a flash of light

  • Maybe it's static electricity? Not that the crystals have residual static, but when you hit them, they move past each other in a short enough amount of time to discharge some static. You could also try this with different atmospheres to see if that plays any role. I imagine you guys have already done that though.

  • @Mahoney1981 Sorry, I didn't finish watching the video, I clicked on the nature sticky tape x-ray first. That theory about the yada yada yada is too complicated for me so it's probably the right one. Does the weird color it shows on florescent light have anything to do with the color when it get's smashed? I was thinking that this could be the reason it didn't look like a normal static discharge before I watched the prevailing theory.

  • Long word

  • Now try saying that three times! Lol

  • depending on how sensetive the crystaine structure is to various shock energies, one could surmise a potential application as an ultrasound, or infrasound indicator. also, if polar in the right way, an electrical charge passed through a dissolved mixture may offer differeing optical effects, or if the solution were under pressure.

  • If this stuff could be coated on military uniforms, then it could be used for real-life simulations - the area where the fake bullets hit will light up, indication a hit.

  • or paintball

  • On sidewalks! then when people walk on it, it's gonna be like Michael Jackson in the Billie Jean music video XD

  • Paint this stuff onto the stick part of a prop "light saber"? When you bang it against something, it would crush the crystals and light up, in theory.

  • I wonder if his voice is actually that deep, I suspect a voice changer..

  • No shit Sherlock

  • Nerd.... :)

  • I'm a chess player, and I had the idea of putting a sheet of this just under the pieces so every time you move them, they'd glow.

Of course, you'd need to make them more sensitive somehow, because you don't exactly slam your queen against the board.

  • why make it using crystals which are one time use before putting them back overnight. Why not use lights like led and make a simple touch button

im not 100% though but i think that will work

you might need to know how to wire electronics etc.

  • haha, true, great idea bud. :)
