@thomas93498 thank you for the respect. don't want to dis your uncle, but those gunships needed refuel, re-arm, and maintenance every nite. that meant i had a dry, secure bed to sleep in evry nite. whne we put the rangers and marne recon in the bush we never felt good "until our boys" were back behind the berm for the night. they were our charrges, "children" until they were back safe, behind the wire. just the way it was

Welcome back even though far too long. I was in USAF basic about 6 months after the fall of Saigon. Spent 20 years in the USAF, knew lots of guys who were fortunate to have come back and tell of their experiences.
@ssteiner53 I went in October 1975. 3701 at Lackland. Then after SP Tech School, stationed at Offutt AFB in Nebraska. Only stayed in 4 years. Then, had a career as a Private Detective and videographer from then, to now.
Thanks for the video & the memories...I think. Flew right seat (gunner) from Feb.69 through Nov.70 with the Outlaws & The Mavericks (gun ships)...and even left seat ("peter pilot") a number of occasions out of the "infamous" Vinh Long Airfield ("the war..within the war"). Was with the 27th Cbt. Engineers prior to them, up in the A-Shau Valley area, for 13 months..set up FSB "Bastogne", NDP 4 & 5...and "we're" STILL fighting Bogus, BS "wars"
at the expense of our own people! Ron Paul in 12 !
A company, 2/502 101st. 69-70. A war we could have won if they had let us fight it. But they had to play their games and cost a lot of soldiers lives for nothing, Politicians suck.
Good stuff! I was a Huey Crew Chief/Gunner with I Corp Avn, which became 282nd Assault Helicopter Co. in 65-66 and went back in '71 to the 134th AHC at Tuy Hoa. Brings back some fond memories and some not so good. Nevertheless, after 23 years on active duty it was a time in my life that will remain with me always. God Bless all of our military.
Love the video, thanks for posting. I was with 'A' C, 2/5th 1st Cav 68-69. Infantry, M-60. Needless to day, this stirs up a lot of strong memories. I can still feel the AK-47 rounds pounding of the floor of a Huey during our CA's. Memories are good and bad.
my dad was in nam in 67 recomarines all that i know he ever said much he in bad shape and dying goverment wont help with medical . says purple heart aint worth a cup of coffee and fuck uncle sam
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara wrote in a book before he died that the Gulf of Tonkin incident NEVER HAPPENED. It was used to justify an all out invasion in 1965 and thus began the troop deployment. Imagine that, a war waged based on a lie. Sound familiar???
I also know the importance of showing all the atrocities...what we don't remember we stand to repeat it...but you did such a good job on brown Navy...it shows the truth that American soldiers have a heart...
20 Stars and more for this version...Excellent job...I have looked for over a year to find a video that showed what took place in Vietnam without having to be reminded of the atrocities and blood shed...my Father was in the Army World War II... no one should have to relive the nightmare watching a video...or have the horrible flashbacks my Father had...Thank you so much...from a proud daughter of a World War II veteran...
These guys are the greatest Heros ever ! Forty + years ago they fought Marxist the best they new how ,only to have one elected as president of this country four decades later !
Great video, blackadder, as usual. Love looking at these Viet vids with the sound track.. I flew H-34's then Ch-46's..Phrogs.. from Marble Mountain, then spent a year with Air America flying assorted stuff, initially a Bell 205A (UH-1D), out of Vientiane then out of Saigon. Got in enough flying to last a lifetime. All the best. Keep up the fine work. 1LT USMC 1MAW HMM-263 70-71.
Grandfather, Hmong recruit for the CIA, Fought the Vietcong on the border of Laos and Vietnam. He rescued tons of downed pilots and soldiers, and fucked up the Commie's Transportation routes. Without the Hmong people's help, the US would have lost many fine men of which would have been dragged off to torture camps. The fucking Assholes in America pulled us out of the war, and now many of the Hmong people are still being persecuted. My family were the lucky ones to get out of the Hell hole.
@Nationofhonor I flew many runs from Udorn and Vientiane in 71 supporting the Hmong, flying into L20A, Long Tieng. I have the greatest respect for the toughness, loyalty and integrity of the Hmong people. If I could, I'd let any Hmong who wants into the US in. Best wishes to you. former Captain, Air America and 1LT USMC before that.
Served in the Nam with NZ infantry. The helo gunships saved our butts on numerous occasions.Thanks.To all of the writers who think war is a video game.I assure you its not.Talk to and Thank a Vet.
Great song to honor those who operated and rode in helicopters during the Vietnam war! These veterans deserved a much better welcome home after the war than they got...It wasn't their fault they didn't win the war (they did what they were ORDERED to do by their generals, admirals, and other commanders!)...Great job, Vietnam veterans and sorry for the curses, spitting, and other humiliations many of you suffered through immediately after you returned home!
wow i felt like i was there, it even made my heart race seeing the bullets fly and to see the tracers. thank you for your service! and for this historical footage! us army 81-85

You obviously didn't learn any grammar during your fictional street exploits eh? The difference between your fairy tales and being a door gunner in the Nam, is in your "street" you're not in an open doorway, with charlie spraying lead at your exposed ass.
20th Special Operations(USAF) "Green Hornet" here Nha Trang 1968-69. Vietnam IS and always WILL be a "Green Hell" to those of us who spent a year there.....
Your history lacks previous context. You forgot the Colonialism and Imperialism inflicted on Vietnam by the French. You forgot the invasion by the Japanese in WW2. You forgot France's failed efforts to retain its colony by using a conventional military against seasoned geurilla warriors (reminds me of a funny revolution in 1775-6). You forgot that the US divided up Vietnam to delay elections they knew the Communists would win. I gues Democracy's only good if the people vote how you want them to.
It's this style of video that I feel youtube was made for. It honors the warriors who fought and died over there while giving them the respect they'd appreciate.
Three minutes of video and an old Stones tune make Vietnam seem like Disneyland...?!?
Your comment makes me think that your parents wasted a night of meaningless passion and valuable DNA when they created you. Either grow up or pull you head out of your butt.
@16Echo101stID Well said. I agree with him. Try reading Caputo's A Rumor of War, or Casualties Of War. The Vietnam War was NOT a happy place for ANYBODY to be in.
we need another war. not a hands-tied-behind-your-back war like nam, but something along the lines of a world war where we americans come together for one common goal - to annihilate some ass.
@gabbyliciousbk must be amazing to kick unarmed hamless innocent pple out of a heli while thinking you are killing an "enemy" ... NOT! you are no better, but hey I cant blame you since its your grandpa you are talking about so you dont know any better. maybe some day you will... some day.
@Kozzzmozzz7 I may not know what its like in war, but if you lost as many of my men as he did in battle, and then captured the people who did it, who's to say you wouldn't have done the same thing? He said while the charlie were on the helicopter they would laugh and joke about the U.S soldiers they killed, and they would yell die Americans. My grandfather made an example of one man by throwing him out the back of the heli. After that every single p.o.w they had gave up the position of their base
@gabbyliciousbk War brings the worst out in humans thats for sure, I ment no disrespect to your grandfather as i know the story now. But the way you commentated did not reflect that at all.
Man the excitement this video brings. Many was the time I saw the GUNSLINGERS tear old charlie a new one. I was with Jayhawks in Dongtam. I was gunner for a general that flew circles above the action. Later I transfered to TAN AN to finish my tour. Merkin 256 on hunter-killer. Hibl, Ends, Sims and me crewed the Last of the Jayhawks.
blackadder73nz-- You did awesome on these videos and music match. I was their 3 tours 1964-1966-1968, You made tears to my eyes again.. Most people have no clue what its really like to be in war and supporting what the politcians direct military to protect our freedom. USA MUST REINSTATE THE DRAFT re-educate this country.. To much dope- and dopes- To many elected idiots getting paid special favors.
The Main Steam News Media is the Cause- ABC_NBC_CBS-- all kick backs they run the USA.
We had no choice,, for you losers it was called a DRAFT all USA brats under 18 YO.. best thing USA every did and needs to do again..
Your question-- What was it like over there? FUCKED.
Maybe you and other scums that sit on your ass and have nothing to do but read and comment on a dumb ass website might try getting some guts and go try it-- fucken freaks/ cowards/ yet you want more free stuff from government and do not want to help. Losers
@viper8red I didn't realize it worked out so well for anyone but Monsanto, the military industrial complex, and anyone who launched a career from it; plus not getting left behind. All the dead for 22-24 torpedoes that couldn't be confirmed by the Turner Joy in a zone America shouldn't have even been in anyway. Marvelous thinking indeed. America went to war because it provided the illusion of stimulating the economy and, of course, it was the religious non-commie red pinko thing to do. RIP.
@razorbak16 Hate the documents, not the reader. You're a fucking idiot, and obviously an expendable one that has no issues with being expendable for nothing. Therefore, a double idiot. Congratulations Congratulations.
@viper8red to bad we were during good during the war until the god damn dumb ass politicians stepped in and fucked everything up. Also all those god damn hippies and dumb ass college students during the time.
@Buddyfun - The Hell are you babbling about? One the one hand you're rambling about "idiot" politicians in charge, and the TV media "running" the country, and on the other you want to "bring back the draft".
And you think you were "protecting our freedom" in Vietnam? LOL what a dummy.
@Buddyfun Thanks for your service man, I understand that Vietnam was hell. I did 2 Tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. I gotta disagree with you on the draft part though. I think that fully professional fighting forces are a better way to go about business. No disrepect to you, or any Veterans of Vietnam, but i think that the draft was one of the reasons that the Vietnam war ended the way it did.
I also think that if you wanna be a politician, you have to have officer military expiernence.
@Buddyfun my dad was in nam, he was an IT consultant until they found out he had a heli license. he never asked to take the life of another person, or to watch the people around him lose theirs. my father was never the same. if you chose to go to war, thats your business, but neither you nor the government have any right to make that decision for another person. i thank you for your service sir, but you can keep your hypocritical opinions to yourself.
@cmh17a We went to Vietnam because our illustrious Political Leadership said so. Also, to make Corporations that sell aircraft, bullets, typewriters, socks, tanks, explosives, and a myriad of other things quite wealthy. War is Big Business.
Another excellent one Rob, Awesome footage with a great song choice. Hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you the very best in the New Year. And, to all of you outstanding Blackadder fans - hope you had a great Christmas as well and Happy New Year!
Great Sea Wolf Gunship footage! Love the song and the Gunship film. I know one of the 'Firebird' pilots that went to the Navy TDY to train the newly formed 'Sea Wolves' Detachment in 1966. That's right folks, the Seawolves were trained by 'Firebird' pilots! That just means they learned from THE BEST! Thanks Rob, good stuff. Merry Christmas to all and to all the Vietnam Vets out there, thanks for your service to our Nation & WELCOME HOME!
God bless the guys that fought in this war!

@yanzink

My grandpa used to kick captured charlie out of helicopters to see if they would bounce once they hit the ground.
gabbyliciousbk 4 months ago
@gabbyliciousbk must be amazing to kick unarmed hamless innocent pple out of a heli while thinking you are killing an "enemy" ... NOT! you are no better, but hey I cant blame you since its your grandpa you are talking about so you dont know any better. maybe some day you will... some day.
Kozzzmozzz7 3 months ago
@Kozzzmozzz7 I may not know what its like in war, but if you lost as many of my men as he did in battle, and then captured the people who did it, who's to say you wouldn't have done the same thing? He said while the charlie were on the helicopter they would laugh and joke about the U.S soldiers they killed, and they would yell die Americans. My grandfather made an example of one man by throwing him out the back of the heli. After that every single p.o.w they had gave up the position of their base
gabbyliciousbk 3 months ago

Losers

@Buddyfun Thanks for what you did in Vietnam
ccberry10 6 months ago
@Buddyfun Oh yah because the draft worked really well for the vietnam war (rolls eyes). Don't be stupid.
viper8red 5 months ago
@viper8red I didn't realize it worked out so well for anyone but Monsanto, the military industrial complex, and anyone who launched a career from it; plus not getting left behind. All the dead for 22-24 torpedoes that couldn't be confirmed by the Turner Joy in a zone America shouldn't have even been in anyway. Marvelous thinking indeed. America went to war because it provided the illusion of stimulating the economy and, of course, it was the religious non-commie red pinko thing to do. RIP.

LOL what a dummy.
sudaev 1 month ago
@Buddyfun Thanks for your service man, I understand that Vietnam was hell. I did 2 Tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. I gotta disagree with you on the draft part though. I think that fully professional fighting forces are a better way to go about business. No disrepect to you, or any Veterans of Vietnam, but i think that the draft was one of the reasons that the Vietnam war ended the way it did.
I also think that if you wanna be a politician, you have to have officer military expiernence.

@Buddyfun thats for your sacrifice, you deserve to be set up for life, your a true american!!!!
rmpracht 1 month ago
@Buddyfun my dad was in nam, he was an IT consultant until they found out he had a heli license. he never asked to take the life of another person, or to watch the people around him lose theirs. my father was never the same. if you chose to go to war, thats your business, but neither you nor the government have any right to make that decision for another person. i thank you for your service sir, but you can keep your hypocritical opinions to yourself.

@1SGPARKER why did we go to vietnam?
cmh17a 9 months ago
@cmh17a We went to Vietnam because our illustrious Political Leadership said so. Also, to make Corporations that sell aircraft, bullets, typewriters, socks, tanks, explosives, and a myriad of other things quite wealthy. War is Big Business.

I went because I was drafted. When I got there I found getting to the villages before the VC or NVA was rewarding.
