  • I love this song, the harmonies are just so well done, for one, and the message is great. I haven't been able to get it out of my head all day! Keep being awesome Roy (and friends).

  • I love your sound. Very reminiscent of the Mamas and the Papas! (That's a compliment.) It must have been intentional, as I noticed a definite "Monday Monday" reference in the supporting backup.

  • Hey Roy, just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that all of us on the right aren't complete Kool-Aid drinkers. While I don't believe that same-sex...anything...is morally correct, neither is the imposition of my beliefs on anyone else. While I don't often agree with you, I must say that this one was dead on. Keep 'em coming, if for no other reason than my skeptical entertainment :)

  • Hey, Roy! New York Senate passed the Marriage Equality Act 33 to 29. How about a new version of this in commemoration?? Please??

  • How very The Mamas and The Papas of you! Awesome, I LOVE it!

  • what song is this song patterned off of?

  • 48 people are pretty selfish, ignorant, bigots.

  • it's ironic as hell that Virginia's state slogan is "Virginia is for lovers" ----- I'm one "Psycadelic Relic" who loves this song! looking forward to what you have brewing to comment on "Perry v. Schwarzenegger" (especially with the news on how faithful Schwartzenegger is to his own "traditional marriage" --- or is that what makes it traditional marriage????)

  • i just puked in my mouth a little.

The smell of bo and patchouli is practically eeking out of my monitor from this video.

Roy, you are 53 years old (per wikipedia). Time to get rid of the flavor savor. You aren't a 22 year old Barista. Stop embarassing yourself.

  • Very uplifting, thanks Roy! You rock.

  • i love this song, of course its just like Roy to incorperate "he didnt mean green, yes i did" for a quick laugh even in such a wonderful powerful song

  • A beautiful song, with an important message: "No state can legislate the human heart."

Roy, you are truly one in a million when it comes to spreading the message of marriage equality (and other important social issues).

  • It's been a while, but everytime I come back to a Roy Zimmerman song I'm blown away by the whole experience!!

  • I think this is my favorite song of Roy's. "No state can legislate the human heart" Rock on :) Love is love!

  • Really great song; I can't get enough. And congratulations to California for coming to your senses!

  • @ScrewFoxNews Actually as far we know the state is still dominated by intolerate bigots, it was only because of the appeal to common sense by one judge that all this is even possible.

  • Yay for Prop 8's downfall!

  • We won! We won! We won!

    OMGWTFBBQGTFO!!!!!!!1111!!!!!1!1111

  • yeah, baby!

  • I haven't been able to stop playing this song after Prop 8 got overturned today.

  • "The decision comes down today in Perry v. Schwartzenegger" - Thanks Roy for waging the good fight for justice. I am with you for the long haul. Let's drop homophobia back into the laps of the Mormons, Rick Warren, and homophobes where ever they discvriminate from.

  • Positive, beautiful music that still reminds us that the battle is not over.

  • Hey Roy - my copy of Real American arrived a couple of days ago. Classy album, nicely done sir. Still trying to let my favourite tracks surface, but can I beg one favour? PLEASE put up a video of Socialist!, cos I have a couple of rabid Beck-and-Palin fans among my friends, and I'd love to link them to this song!

    Cheers

    Tony

    UK fan

  • Prefect in many ways. Keep up the good work.

  • Are there lyrics for this song somewhere?

What's that line near the end? "And .... reconciled with the mother of his child" ?

  • @Mithcoriel It's "And Strom Thurmond reconciled with the mother of his child."

  • @ArianneHermida Thanks.

  • This is my new favorite song...I can't wait to get this on iTunes or CD! Phenominal job, Roy! Keep up the good work and fighting the good fight.

  • beautiful. So moving.

  • So glad that Roy is coming to John McCutcheon's home town of Wausau for April fools. What a Date. And John is coming back home for another benefit concert two weeks later!

  • Beautiful

  • Wow, great song, very uplifting.

  • super. great lyrics and a sound in the best tradition of what folk music is known for. hope to hear you in houston. also love the "Dear Number 1036924053887" by Roy.

  • "We can love who we love, 'till death do us part

'cause no state can legislate the human heart"

    Great lyrics and so true!

  • Great song and performance! Makes sense to me!! 5 *****'s

  • I can't believe this video doesn't have more views, it's a beautiful song.

  • this song is amazing... just amazing.

  • awesome song, very chilling :)

  • Gee, Roy, I don't usually get tears in my eyes when I listen to your music!!

  • I think this is your best video on this site. I listen to it the most.

  • Standing O !!! Once again!! Stopped by for my 'Roy Z Fix' and got it good.

Love the homage to Mamas & Papas, the 60s outfits, the rhymes and... 'Uncle Sam ain't no bigot, no more...'

  • I just noticed Roy is wearing socks with sandals in this. LOL!

I'm glad you were able to turn the accident money into this video. Something very positive out of something so destructive.

  • Great tune. As ever.

  • Shame this sort of song ever went out of fashion, hippies do some good music.

  • One of Bardwells reasons for not marrying interracial couples was that he feared for their children. I can understand that, who knows what would happen to them, they could grow up to be........................President of the U.S.??

  • Dear FSM. Whoever rated this less than 5 has to think about their brainstacks.

    Nix ~

  • Videos like this often get votbotted down by (in this case) homophobes so maybe that is what happened. Though I don't have any evidence concerning this particular video.

I would assume it'd get 5 stars because it would almost exclusively be viewed by people who already like Roy so they're very unlikely to be anti-gay marriage or hate the song style.

  • Nix ~ can't argue with you there.

  • I just listened to this song for the first time in a few months. I'm glad I did. I love it.

  • I really really like this song.

  • It's just such a great song, I was singing it for weeks after I heard it first.

  • Jim Crowe laws and the KKK are not that far in our past ...See those same angry faces in those who are against health care ..Its hate not debate ..

  • Thats not fair and you know it

  • Great arrangement. I recommend checking the Wiki article of "Loving v Virginia".

  • "Don a white suit or a tux, it ain't our business who someone marries"

  • Racial Integrity Act.... kinda sounds similar to the Defense of Marriage Act.....

  • Exact same thing, except RIA restricted interracial marriage, DoMA restricts same sex marriage.

  • So do explain the difference between interracial marriage and same-sex marriage, cskog001. We're all dying to know.

  • I'm confused, i said that DoMA and RIA were the "exact same thing" except that one restricted on the bias of race the other on sexuality. What difference are you referring to?

  • This is such a lovely song. Such a peaceful tone to it.

  • This song and this video are absolutely outstanding^10.

  • I just love this song and all of your songs, Roy, you're really an amazing songwriter and singer and I think if someone asked me who my favorite singer is I would have to say you. I first heard your songs because someone linked me to What if the Beatles Were Irish. And from then on it was love.

    Rock on, Roy!

  • lol almost word for word with what id say, hes excellent!

  • wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

I think i would have left out the comment about gay men's wifes

  • It is the whole point of the song! The government cannot legislate the heart!

  • This is an awesome song!

  • "No state can legislate the human heart." Definitely! "Racial Integrity Act" - That people can think up such cruelty is beyond belief. My first home was South Africa, so I can relate to this song. There was the "Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act" Then they had the "Immorality Act" prohibiting "immoral" acts such as extra-marital sex between whites & people of other races. The secret police spied on mixed couples suspected of having a relationship. I know.

    Spread the love.

  • this is awesome ;_;

  • Another great song by Roy Zimmerman

  • 2:57, Great song =D

  • Sorry for the deleted comments, I got a case of the Whomevers.

I think this song and all of you singing it are supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

  • That was great! Thanks.

  • This video is the video of the week on Sing Out!'s website. Epic.

  • Hey Arianne,

It's Melanie -- thanks, and wanted to address the "whomever" issue. In your songwriting, it's important to be conversational and keep in character. Since our big hook is "It ain't what's outside that matters, it's what's in ya" we thought a person who says "ain't" and "ya" isn't going to suddenly drop a "whomever" But we did go around on the whoever/whomever issue for a while. So there ya go -- ain't that interesting to whomever? Looking forward to hearing more of YOUR songs!

  • Melanie,

I completely understand the staying in character dilemma. In my theatre arts/play writing class, I always make the mistake of not matching the way the character speaks with the character. Once again, sorry for the rant.

  • @RoyZimmerman Where's Phil Ochs when we need him......

  • I wish Roy would come to the UK sometime...

  • *sniffles* I'm gonna cry now, I think ...

You guys keep up the good work, singing tolerance!

  • Thanks for this song, Roy and Melanie! And this rendition with support from Laura and John and Sandy is delightful!

  • I'm speechless in CA...

    Song is PERFECT...

    5 stars just ain't enough...so I'll stand & applaud you all!!!

  • this is 100% brilliant

  • right on !

  • Roy, you deliver the goods with every song. Keep on.

  • nice shirt Roy. I think I had one like that in the 70s

  • Nicely done Roy, as per usual...

  • awesome man, i really enjoyed it

  • Yeah! The more I hear this song, the better I love it. It is such a good parody of the Mamas and the Papas' style, Laura Love's voice is a good match for Cass Elliot's, and her solo about Strom Thurmond makes me laugh out loud every time. Roy Zimmerman is terrific as always, and the excellence of the music and all the voices brings the message across so strongly. I just have to recommend this to everyone I know.

    Great song; great recording!

    Yeah!

  • I sit in awe of your gifts, Mr. Z. Hope you can make it out to Atlanta sometime soon and sing for us.

  • Roy's planning to hit all 50 states this year... he'll be in California through July, tour the Northwest in August, the Mid-Atlantic in September, the Northeast in October, and Florida and the Deep South in November.

If you know of a good venue in your neck o' the woods -- including house-concert-appropriate private residences -- suggestions are always welcome.

  • Yeah.

  • GREAT song.

I wish I'd known he was at the Freight & Salvage!

Nice job on the video work itself.

  • Roy4Prez

    I'd vote!

  • Excellent song, Roy, and a great arrangement and backup vocals -- I was singing along!

  • Love this song! It was the highlight of your concert here last April.

  • Great song, and what an awesome recording! Your usual witty writing and catchy melody, Roy, keep it up.

  • Roy, I love this song, and this is a GREAT performance of it! Super vocals, tight harmonies, and powerful. A zillion stars to all of you.

  • Great work, as always!

  • No way.....Roy keep it, it's damned sexy!!!!!

  • What a lovely song.

  • lolol zomg awesometasticmazing!!

  • Lol - upon hearing this I tried to sub to you... Again! You win at life.

  • Zimmerman, you are a class act!

  • NOOOO! Zimmerman, you have failed this time. You're not wearing the WristSTRONG bracelet that I gave you. Who is supposed to raise awareness of Hollywood wrist violence now? I mean, aside from Stephen Colbert, his fans, and Larry King.

  • did you really give him one? if so, you're my hero.

  • TheFingernails --

Yes, I did give him a WristSTRONG bracelet. He was really cool about it and wore it for the rest of the show. I am hoping this was shot before June 6th, which is when I gave it to him, and he actually wears it.

  • Cleveland town thinks its great!

  • awesome. most professional one yet. Keep all of it coming.

  • Charming, Roy, and very professional!

  • Nice!

  • The production on this track is outstanding! Lovin it!

  • You must do this one on piano! :D

  • Ugh. I know I am not the only grammar nerd ripping their hair out in the beginning of this song.

"We can finally trade I do's with whoever we may choose."

Nooooo! The people being chosen are the object of the sentence, not the subject. The grammatically correct version of that line is, "We can finally trade I do's with whomever we may choose."

Sorry for the rant, I'm a grammar freak. By the way, nice socks and sandals.

  • Heh! When I read your quoted sentence my brain actually interpreted it as: "We can finally trade I do's with whomever we choose."

I was all like, "wait, that's right, what's this person's beef?"

I reckon my brain has an automatic grammar checker. Good thing I'm not an English teacher. :)

  • Sounding more like John Denver every year

  • Excellent - great music as well!

  • absolutely FANTASTIC!

Mama's and the Papa's comes to mind.

Thanks once again for the great video.

  • Bravi tutti!

  • awesome harmonies

  • Gah! I love this song! You are my freakin hero! COME TO KANSAS CITY!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll totally promote for you, seriously, I know people. (None of them important or influencial, but I know several of them.)

  • Great one! thanks Roy.

  • *applauds*

  • Thanks for yet another superb song! Much love from Finland.

  • Roy, I love this!

  • Well DONE, Roy!!!! Right you are!!!

  • a great lesson in American history, as an European I had no idea about the Loving case. Interesting connection to the same sex marrige thing. Thanks!

  • this is tooooo funny

  • Bravo!!!!

  • What a songwriter - great stuff my man

  • Help! I can't stop watching this! INTERVENTION!!!

Plus, something about John McCutcheon is making me giggle. I do love me some John McC!

  • ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • Sounds great Roy, keep on truckin!

  • been a while zimmerman

XD at however act was strangely spelted with three ks

  • I love the ensemble! Adds a new dimension to the song.

  • I love all your songs, including this one, but I always find it awkward to see performers going along with a studio recording. It's just me, but live performance has so much more impact, even if it's not as pitch perfect as a studio recording.

  • Normally I would agree with you, but in this case I actually think it adds to the hilariousness and the '60s feel of the video. Plus we do have the great live version with Roy and Laura, which has all the spontenaiety and fun you could want. :)

  • In a white dress or a tux

It ain't nobodies business who a person fu-... um... marries.

    lol

  • california is dead economically now, i am glad it is going to go to mormon 's stateheaven now that they voted to ban gay marriage.

virginia is more progresive than california? who can believe that.

  • not only will same sex be un-banned soon (is that a word? It should be!), but Cali will probably also have to decriminalize weed to get their economy back on track!

  • Hi Zach!

You've seen "Prop 8: The Musical", haven't you? Funniest thing ever outside of Roy! "Gay marriage will save the e-co-no-meeeee!" :D

(Oh, and legalizing pot would probably help, too. ;))

  • Iowa, too. YIKE!!

  • Love it!

  • Beautiful.

  • I've lived in Virginia all my life, and the county I live in did not desegregate schools until 1976. I never thought I would live to see a day when Virginia was more liberal than California.. (not that VA allows gay marriage or anything, but CA really sucks right now.)

  • it's what's in ya!

  • Great one Roy!

  • hahahaha this is such a hippie song, 5/5 stars

  • wow, an even better version! sounds awesome!

  • Good song, good message. Homosexual isnt my thing, but who am I to judge? Love should always conquer all.

  • at 2:05

"find a white dress or a tux /

it ain't nobody's business who a person marries"

somehow I doubt that was the original rhyme... hehe

in any case, great song and great recording

  • Gold.

  • this makes me happy on the inside :)

  • fantastic, just like all your other songs

  • Uncle Sam ain't no bigot.

  • Happy Loving Day!

  • Sweeeeeeeeet! Terrific lineup, and it sounds awesome!

  • What a fantastic sound! Great production! When will the new CD come out??

  • hooray!

  • Nice! Sounds great together!

  • woah, im actually a fan of laura love. i have 3 of her cds.

  • fantastic work! you have a great team there =D
