lladnekj, I really really enjoyed your playing. I've never heard it done on guitar but liked the beauty and simplicity of it. My husband plays the guitar in the same style. I'm going to ask him to watch your video and learn to play it.
@starshine428 This is not from tablature. lladnekj is a friend of mine, a former student actually. He figured this out himself by ear, and as far as I know he hasn't tabbed it out properly yet, though he did try to do it for me. I couldn't figure it out from his "tab," so I just watched this video and got enough from it to figure out a similar, but slightly different arrangement. He is really good at listening to a piece of music and figuring out how to play it on the guitar!
@guitmartiman my husband also learns by watching and listening; he doesn't read music. I remember when Dust In the Wind came out, he bought the single, listened to it 6 times and got it. If you're too young to know that song, check it out!
As a professional choral director with a degree in organ performance, I was shocked to see this arrangement on YT. Once the shock wore off, I was entranced. I love it, it moved me. I hope your spirituality in playing can continue to affect people as it affected me. Congratulations on a fine performance, and a fine acoustic recording as well.
Humanity is not responsible for death and disease. It may be culpable in not doing enough to relieve human suffering, but it is not responsible of for the "fallen state of the world" and I didn't kill Jesus.
Stop trying to lay a guilt trip on me and the rest of humanity.
Beautiful. I just learned the name of this hymn as it was sung in the movie Bonhoeffer (who resisted again Hitler). Your version is very pretty. Nice work~
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (March 29), I played this for Sunday School assembly. Just thought I'd share.
This was very beautiful. My kids are working on learning this song on violin, piano and guitar, so it was very nice for them to see this. Thanks for posting it!
The song started out, as you said, in the seventeenth century as a popular song--the melody was then used for a hymn, which became a Lutheran standard, which Bach later arranged.
Art Garfunkel played a Bach recording to Paul Simon, who indeed incorporated most of the melody in his "American Tune" and has credited the tune (incorrectly!) to Bach.
Nice pickin... didn't I hear about 30 seconds of Paul Simon's American Tune in there near the end? God also blessed you with a really nice guitar, too... if you want to take fingerstyle to the next level, check YouTube for Tommy Emmanuel videos! :-) Peace...
It sure does, I re-listened to the old Paul Simon "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" album and I wonder if he adapted that song after that hymn now... a LOT of that song sounds the same... check it out! :-)
Did you get a chance to check out the Tommy Emmanuel vids on YouTube yet? Peace...
Well the Music for this song were written by Hanns Hassler in 1601, so I guess Paul Simon may have heard it and said "man that sounds cool" and made a song based on it. Who knows? I have looked at some of Tommy Emmanuel's stuff, that guy knows how to play the guitar!! I don't know if I will be able to keep up with him for a few years!
I doubt there is any human being alive today that can keep up with that man on the guitar. Glad you liked the videos... I enjoy them alot myself and have bought 3 of his CDs -- his best is Endless Road if you get a chance to give it a listen... Keep up the good work, thanks for the info on the hymn -- it is interesting to see where Paul Simon "borrowed" that tune! :-)
Amen! Very nicely done!

That was AWESOME !! I always credited Paul Simon with this, but Bach was the creator of it.....WOW, nice Job !!!

Very lovely. Yes, the Paul Simon tune that has a similar melody is "An American Tune".
