Pete probably told Annie that he told Nick, and that's how would have known and told the police. And she probably thought that, if Pete were to make someone up, it wouldn't be his best friend. That part makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that Nick just thinks that he, like, woke up in the middle of the woods with his clothes perfectly clean and goes to school like it's no big deal.
